Mrs. Ann Cathcart The Learning Camp P.O. Box 1146 Vail, CO 81658
Dear Mrs. Cathcart:
As a former camper at the Learning Camp I feel that I am most qualified for the new teacher/counselor position that has recently become open. My experience at the Learning Camp has taught me that a teacher within an environment like the Learning Camp can have a lasting impact.
In the years I have been away from camp my leadership skills have grown significantly. I was Editor in Chief of our yearbook the last two years of my high school career and am currently working my way through an English major with a minor in teaching. If you are looking for a strong leader with a positive attitude that is great with kids, then I would greatly appreciate your consideration for the position. I have included my resume with this letter.
The job of a Learning Camp counselor requires great leadership and people skills, the ability to teach and feel comfortable around a child with a certain learning disabilities and to be willing to put all of your time and focus into the campers that are attending. If accepted for this position I am prepared to carry out these tasks to the best of my ability.
The opportunity to meet with you and discuss this important position would greatly be appreciated. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Allie Sloan

Journalism has carved itself into my heart these past three years and seems as though it may never leave. Today journalism has taught me so many things that I did not know before I started high school and may never have discovered if I were not involved in journalism. I have truly fallen in love with the journalistic aspects of life. Whether it was when I read something in another class and noticed a widow or some other edit flaw or the simplest things like talking with my family, I would be constantly noticing something relating back to journalism. Journalism (Mrs. Burkes journalism) came to me at the age of eight when my older sister Shelby joined journalism when she was in high school. Ever since then I have always wanted to follow in her footsteps. I do not think I would be where I am today without the support she and the rest of my family have given me. Because we all know I do not get things involved with school handed to me on a silver platter. Though not as much as in other classes, I did have to struggle with the fact that at times my dyslexia would get in the way, and it did. I had to learn to depend on my new best friend, command-i. I really had to work to be where I am today and at times it was hard, but I am so happy I made it this far.

Being editor-in-chief was not only a huge honor but also a huge learning experience. I have learned more this year than I ever thought possible. Being EIC I got to see behind the scenes of what really went into making a yearbook. The meetings with Missy were more than eye opening. To be a part of the actual process of making and choosing what the book will be like is truly an amazing feeling. I never knew how much planning really went in to it. Working with Caley could not have been better. Throughout the year we learned that with our opposite personalities we could be there to support and balance each other out. She has helped me so much this year and I could not have asked for a better partner. I am truly going to miss her next year. The deadlines for an EIC are also different than that of a staffers. Having to keep it a total secret was fun and exciting, though at times I had to remind myself that it was not all just fun and games and would need to get back on deadline. I quickly learned that waiting until the last minute to do something for one of my pages was not the smartest thing to do. The journalism ethics I have learned throughout this year I will always be with me for the rest of my life. Having the experience of editing others work was one of my favorite parts of being an editor. I not only helped those that I was editing but also myself. When I would look through their folder checking things off I would look at previous edits to see what the other editors had said. Doing this I learned new editing techniques and proper editing skills I did not know before. On distribution day I joked with Caley how it was the birth of our baby. The funny thing is it pretty much was. The time and dedication Caley and I put in to making this book what it is today I know was 110 percent. I am absolutely so happy with the book we created. Someday whether I’m in the journalism field or teaching elementary students, everything I learned in my time on yearbook will definitely be a huge help to me. Everything we learn in this class has a true life lesson attached to it.

Getting to work on the spring sports supplement was definitely the most fun and at the same time the most challenging of all my deadlines. Doing this all on my own I had the added pressure of not only not wanting to let Mrs. Burke down but also Caley. The cover turned out so beautiful I could not let the supplement not shine as well. Starting off I had to listen to every word my classmates said, just waiting for a ‘just saying’. This was one of the more fun parts about working on this piece. Every time I would hear one I would express a slight hidden smile upon my face. However it did get harder. I always knew I wanted to have a scoreboard on the cover but the thing that I was the most undecided about was the color. I started off with an orange background with white text over. It did not look good. Then visa versa, still not perfect. Finally landing on the blue from our color pallet with cream text it looked perfect. But still something was missing, it was the headline. Everything looked really good; I just felt that something was missing. With the help of Caley’s advice this is when I decided to add the color background on the title, theme and year. Now this may be my favorite part of the over all piece. Today I could not be happier with the turn out of the 2011 spring supplement.

Usually your first time doing something is al-ways pretty scary, and that is definitely how it was for me the first time I did a divider page by myself. Having so little on the page I thought it would be a piece of cake, I was wrong. Getting used to the different style of theme writing was the thing that I had the most trouble figuring out. I had about three rough drafts before I finally turned it in to Caley and even then it still was not perfect. Thinking that I had so little to do I put some things of until the last minute. Realizing that was a bad idea when I had to keep doing more and more interviews I became extremely stressed. Looking back on the whole process I can see my mistakes clearly. Knowing what I know now I wish I could go back and take more time do redo this page. What really upsets me the most is that there are even some spelling and grammar errors in the caption. This is something that I knew was going to be a problem from the beginning and I continually tried my hardest to not let any happen. I’m upset that this one slipped by and made it into the book. Another thing that makes me upset is the fact that the “just saying” is in the wrong font, it should have been in XXII clean-army not dirty. Though these little mistakes are sprinkled throughout the page and it could be a lot better in my opinion, I am still happy with the over-all look.

As we walked along the halls of our crowded campus it was hard
not to notice the familiar sayings and names that made up our student
body. With these words we learned how to define who we were, and
how we wanted to be heard.
Staying true to ourself was one thing, but staying true to our
culture was something even more important. For one junior, Yousef
Hassan, staying true to who he was involved supporting his Egyptian
culture. Whenever Egypt and America played in a soccer match he
was always there with his Egypt jerseys representing his home team.
“I support Egypt and their sports, I not ashamed of it,” Hassan said.
“It’s like my typical patriotism.”
Whether it was dressing up as a favorite Disney character or going
all out in orange and white, students crowded the halls revealing their
characters during homecoming week.
“Crazy orange and white day [was my favorite part of homecoming
week],” freshman Blake Waranch said. “I was surprised to see everyone
dressed up that much. My classes were filled with orange.”
Even without dressing up in crazy clothes students declared
themself on a daily basis with their everyday clothes.
“[Expressing yourself] helps you to connect with other people,”
senior Megan Bennett said. “It gives you a unique identity and always
says a lot about who you are. [Style] can be unique to anyone.”
The student body was nothing less than unique,

My section is the only section in the book that interests every student. It’s about their lives and the average student.
It’s a section that hopefully every student on campus will be able to relate to.
It’s what the average student does and what affects them daily.

ee This picture of mine was taken for the people divider over my third deadline. Trying to find the perfect picture for this page was not easy. With camera in hand I had gone to look around the school for that certain event within our stu-dent body. That’s when I found these two friends eating lunch and sharing some laughs. When I finally placed the picture on the page I had a feeling of excitement. My favorite part about this picture is the visual verbal effect it has on the page. Reading the word Chatter and seeing this picture at almost the same time gives you a feeling that they just click together. The center of visual interest would definitely be sophomore Jaclyn Thomas, I really love how her smile is captured in this photo.

There was definitely a bonus to having two editor-in-chiefs, not just to help Caley and I but also I felt that it helped the staff more as well. Caley and I were different enough that we clicked with certain staffers and were able to help them in our own way. When I would be helping a staffer get something done I was there to listen to what they had to say and this made it easier for me to help them. Having that one on one time, I feel can really make a difference in how a person will learn what they need to be doing to help our staff. I noticed that a lot of staffers were comfortable coming up to me and asking me questions. This not only made me feel good but also made me want to help them to the best of my abilities so I would not let them down. Also, working with Caley could not have been better. With our great communication we were able to make the beautiful 2011 edition of the Legend that we have today. With Caleys driven personality and my positive outlook we really balanced each other out. Whenever Caley was upset or over stressed I was there to help her through it and give another way to view the situation, also visversa. After we got through the first deadline, which was hard for Caley and I because we were not yet that close, I was more than willing for our relationship to grow to what it is today. Without this I know the book would not be what it is today.

Making the transition from staffer to Editor-in-Chief was definitely no walk in the park. Being scared out of my mind and almost having second thoughts about it was not a healthy way to start off my year. Learning all the extra things that went into being EIC was quite a surprise. My first deadline, I was overwhelmed and didn’t know what I was doing half the time. It was hard feeling that helpless but I put it behind me and got my work done. Through this deadline I learned that staying organized was going to be very important and staying on task and not waiting until the last minute to do something would be key. However with the help of Caley and Mrs. Burke my nerves were calmed and I was able to get through the year with almost no problems. Next year I know this will not happen because I will know exactly what to expect. I am so excited for next year and really hope Kayla will not have these same scared feelings that I did in the beginning. I will definitely try to be as supportive as I can, like Mrs. Burke and Caley were for me. By the end of the year I feel that I had really improved and hope to carry it all with me through next year.

At the midterm I was asked to set three new specific goals for myself related to yearbook for the next half of the year. These three goals were 1) keep up the good communication throughout the staff, 2) prepare myself more for next year and 3) make deadlines. I feel that I could not have picked better goals for myself. These goals turned out to mean a lot to me as a co-Editor in Chief. By the end of the year all three of these goals were met. The communication between the staff grew to be positive and most everyone felt comfortable talking to someone if they needed help. Preparing myself for next year may have been the hardest and scariest one of all my goals. To meet this goal I knew I was going to have to work hard a watch everything that Caley would do, and that’s exactly what I did. By following in Caley’s footsteps and having had her teach me the true traits of an EIC I feel that that will be better prepared for next year. At the beginning of the year getting used to being an EIC took some time, especially when it came to deadlines. I did not make the first couple I had and knew that had to change. I did not want Caley or Mrs. Burke to be disappointed in the decision they made in picking me. I started working harder and not waiting until the last minute and then before I knew it my third goal was met. I began to enjoy doing pages more because I was having more fun than being stressed out.

Y11. Cover- Sports supplement. This is the cover of our sports supplement. I would like this piece to represent me because I did this on my own and it shows my growth more than any of my other pages. One of my favorite things on this page is the color headline and the scoreboard to represent the sports theme.
Y12. End sheet- In my opinion this end sheet is one of the best the Legend has had. I love the colors it has and how the brave head stands out within all the text. Along with both covers, the text on this page are sayings we gathered thought the year that end in ‘Just saying’. All the section names relate back to a verbal word to tie into the theme.
Y13. Title page-This title page is so fun and really school spirited. The picture was taken at our first senior assembly and really shows the excitement of our school spirit. The quote in the cursive font, I feel gives a real personal appeal. All in all I love the way this page turned out.

Though I was still in love with my portfolio from last year I knew it was time to move on. I needed something more mature and that is exactly what I feel my 2011 port-folio is. I not only became more mature in class but also as a person. Working with Caley and the rest of the staff really taught me to become a leader. I learned that they depended on me, almost like the lines carried throughout my portfolio, to me they seem as if they are a support system for the text and the photos. Throughout this year I have learned so much more with InDesign and Photoshop. My portfolio from last year was beautiful but really was just a bunch of cobs clus-tered together. This year I went with something cleaner and somewhat more edgy. I also feel that my writing has grown as well. Working on the theme pages I learned how to give a story proper voice. In this portfolio I feel that my writing has a more mature voice than last years. Over all I am very happy with the way it turned out.
