Editor’s Note
Dear Colleagues
As the first half of the year draws to a close, we celebrate our successes at the office and in the field. We have proven thus far that the AEL family leads by example and places team effort at the forefront in order to achieve world class standards.
Some of the highlights in this issue include a sneak peek from the various sites in our AEL Energy section.
The AEL CSI section takes you on our journey to Thuthukani Centre as part of Nelson Mandela International Day where employees got their hands dirty to build a fully-equipped jungle gym encouraging more physical activity in a safe, controlled environment for the children. Employees also demonstrated AEL’s value of Care by donating slippers and comfort food as part of our Hot Tummies, Warm Feet winter campaign.
Our AEL Values section turns the spotlight onto vibrant, young Lerato Thabede, a sterling example of our company values of Confidence, Courage and Care.
Under our AEL Thought Leadership banner, we celebrate our recent success hosting the annual Workshop for Explosives Engineers and Technical Representatives (WEETR) and participating in the Institute of Quarrying conference.
Safety remains one of our key priorities globally. Through our strong focus on safety, we continue to encourage all employees to always keep their safety switches on. In our AEL in the Field section, we commend AEL Indonesia for their exemplary safety achievement for the second consecutive year.
Finally, in our AEL family section, we introduce the latest babies on board and share another marvellous motivational morsel from Executive Director SADC, Wayne Du Chenne.
As our valued readership, you encourage you to submit your stories for the next issue by e-mailing [email protected]
We trust that you are energised to face the second half of the year with confidence, courage and care.

In line with our thought leadership and knowledge-sharing stance, AEL hosted yet another successful WEETR (Workshop for Explosives Engineers and Technical Representatives) in June.
The conference was tailored to increase technical product knowledge and equip the frontline with detailed information on specific AEL product offerings; best practice and how these offers differentiate AEL in the market.
The conference affords AEL technical staff the opportunity to get updates on the latest technical methods and projects, to be trained or refreshed on technical issues and to share their own work through

presentations and informal discussion.
Simon Tose, Group Consulting Mining Engineer structured the programme and also presented two papers entitled:
1. The evolution of explosives from fire setting to electronics provides big improvements to blasting.2. New developments present ways to mitigate wild flyrock more effectively.
The team of presenters included Sandy Etchells, Mauritz Kotze, Mohammed El Gharraz, Carlos Paz, Lesego Chauto among others.
The event comprised a conference where AEL’s internal experts presented a range of key topics associated with their specific product portfolios and an exhibition showcasing the latest product range including the CE4 Tagger, latest generation underground pump and the Surface Blasting Handbook app (available at the iStore and Play store).
Well done to the Mining Optimisation Team and all delegates who contributed to the success of this workshop.

The children of Thuthukani Centre receiving slippers and beanies to keep them warm
AEL’s “Hot Tummies, Warm Feet Campaign”
As part of our CSI campaign, AEL supports the Thuthukani Centre in Tembisa, a non-profit
organisation that cares for more than 250 vulnerable children. The nature of AEL’s support
looks at facilitating school attendance and valuing of education for the children at the centre.
Coupled with this is the need to keep the children warm in winter. AEL has instituted the
inclusion of an annual winter campaign into its CSI initiatives where blankets, warm clothing
and food are sponsored in order to add comfort to the children and beat the Gauteng winter
chills which reach temperatures bordering on 0˚Celsius. Our successful campaigns to date
include the “Blanket Campaign”, the “Hands and Feet Campaign” and our 2014 “Hot Tummies,
Warm Feet Campaign”. We believe that physical comfort of these children can aide with their
psychological happiness.

AEL in the spotlight in the International Arena - ExpoMin 2014
AEL participated in ExpoMin 2014, a premier event in the mining sector held in Santiago, Chile.
The 13th annual ExpoMin offered an effective platform of contact between national and international supplier companies and the mining industry.
AEL’s presence at the event as one of many exhibitors from 35 countries, enabled constant networking opportunities
with delegates including prospective customers. The major highlight for AEL was the launch of the new CE4 Tagger, which was well-received by the international mining fraternity.
The CE4 Tagger, with GPS, is an inherently safe device for testing and tagging of Electronic Detonators. The CE4 Tagger is usable across all applications of AEL Electronic initiation systems and can be used with current hardware.
The equipment has been designed to simplify use and increase the robustness of devices to be suitable in the mining and construction environment.
AEL was represented by the AEL Latin American team led by Des Decina, MD AEL Latin America.

Young and vibrant, multi-lingual father of two who bops to the beat of retro tunes...
Alan studied mining engineering at the University of Santiago in Chile and graduated with an honours degree in Engineering in 2009. He started working in the engineering support area in June 2007, for the subsidiary of DetNet in South America. He was then promoted to senior support engineer in 2009. Subsequently, Alan was promoted to Project Engineer and Head of Key Accounts in 2011 and 2013 respectively.
All Aboard chatted to Alan while in Chile.
Share some highlights of your career at AEL.
In 2007, I was part of the team that won the first contract with a Chilean Mining company to use our electronic initiating systems. At the beginning of 2008 with our Brazilian partnering company, Britanite, in São Paulo, we did the first electronic blast using the HotShot initiating system. We managed to enter the Brazilian market in the first stage because we could demonstrate that we were able to reduce levels of vibrations induced by the blasting and maintain good levels of fragmentation when using electronic detonators.
During the same year, I was part of the team that was led by Alejandro Contreras, now Operations Manager of AEL Mining Services Chile, where we introduced the electronic initiating systems in Peru and in 2011 we did the same in Argentina.
What does your portfolio entail?
I represent AEL with the various mining clients in the region imparting knowledge about AEL’s products and services.
What are your key responsibilities?
I promote AEL’s strong capability and range of cutting-edge products to current and potential customers as AEL is relatively unknown in this region.
I drive the AEL safety culture within the team and lead them to present a professional approach at the various mines that we work at in South America ensuring that we engage in the safe application of AEL products.
What is your modus operandi? Is it aligned to The AEL Way (confidence, courage, care)?
I like to maintain an environment of trust and loyalty in my
team, to promote good communication and a commitment to rigorous work. So I always endeavour to be transparent, fair and objective in my actions. If we have clear goals, we must strive to achieve them through a display of courage, confidence, and care.
What major projects are you currently engaged in?
One of my biggest focus areas currently is the mining project Sierra Gorda, located in the North of Chile, in the Atacama desert, in the II region of Antofagasta. This project is considered to soon become one of the biggest mining copper projects in the region. We have been involved with this project since the first blast in March 2012 with 100% of the blasts having been initiated using the DigiShot Plus electronic initiating system. It is the first mine in the world where we have used the new CE4 Tagger and where we are implementing a RF Repeater antenna in the pit.
Other recent major projects have been the conversions from the SmartShot system to the DigiShot Plus system in mines in Franke (Chile), Antamina (Peru) and Sossego (Brazil). During May 2014, several mines have called on AEL to display our comparative advantages over the competition. Successful first stage trials have been done in Minera Yanacocha (located near Cajamarca, in Northern Peru and considered South America’s largest gold mine).
What is your vision/ goal for the future within AEL?
My goal is to position AEL as a recognised brand of quality and superior service excellence in Latin America. AEL’s products, services and employees must be synonymous with best quality and meticulousness.
Tell us something interesting about yourself?
I’m a real bookworm. I love reading novels and history books. I also have an aptitude for foreign languages, I studied German and English at university and Italian at the “Istituto italiano di Cultura” in Santiago some years ago. I have also improved my proficiency in English and Portuguese which has helped me with my duties at AEL.
My other obsession is my large, constantly growing collection of vinyl records ranging from rock bands of the 60s and 70s to classical music. This allows me a little escapism from my daily routine. I generally lead a very tranquil life with my wife Ingrid and my two sons Álvaro and Rafael. We love taking long walks or riding our bikes in the park.

AEL takes SETH Academy Learners on a tour of the AECI Dynamite Factory Museum
AEL hosted a group of SETH Academy learners at the AECI Dynamite Factory Museum in Modderfontein in June.
The goal was to give the grade 8 and 9 learners an experience of the work that AEL does and its importance in the South African and global landscape.
Also, having first-hand experience of science and engineering principles in action, will serve to give learners insight into the field of science and technology.
The AECI CSI Fund supports the SETH Academy in partnership with the University of the North West and as

DECLARATION OF GIFTS
Employees may receive gifts at any time of the year. The principle adopted within AECI for receiving and giving of gifts is that:
“an employee should accept gifts and entertainment that are for business purposes only, which is not too frequent”
Gifts that are promotional in nature like pens, diaries, calendars need not be declared provided that their value does not exceed R500.
An employee must therefore do the following to avoid any potential conflict of interests with respect to receiving gifts:
> Gifts worth R0 - R500: No need to declare
> Gifts worth R500 – R2000: Must be declared using Form 001
> Gift over R2000 in value: Line manager/supervisor must authorise the acceptance of such gift. Once permission has been
granted, the recipient employee must complete and sign Form 001 declaring such gift. The immediate manager/supervisor
must also sign Form 001 as an indication that they authorise the acceptance of such gift.
* Form 001 is available on Edge, Intranet and Extranet under the Ethics tab.
* Note: Conversion should be done into the local currency to determine the country specific threshold. For all queries, please contact:

Lerato Thabede (Quality Champion Winner)
What does quality mean to you?
Quality means a way life. If you do things with quality in mind you are guaranteed to do them right, and do them right the first time.
How do you encourage others to deliver Quality The AEL Way?
Firstly it’s important to ensure they understand what Quality The AEL Way is. People tend to resist when they don’t fully understand. Secondly you make them believe it by leading by example and doing things The AEL Way.
Vela Mazula (Catch of the year Winner)
What makes you stand out from the rest in terms of displaying good quality practices?
It’s about making sure that whatever I do, I do honestly and to the best of my ability. Ensuring that it’s done right the first time.

Lerato Thabede, a shining example of the AEL values
of Confidence, Courage and Care doubles up as career
woman, mother and mentor to young girls. All Aboard got
more insight about this vibrant young go-getter.
Give us a brief background of your career path?
I have been with AEL for a year and a half but with the AECI
group for about 9 years.
I moved from DetNet to AEL in 2013. I was promoted to
Distribution Admin Controller. My current role exposes
me to the areas of project management and leadership
and also affords me the opportunity to broaden my
understanding of the supply chain industry.
These are invaluable skills that will enable me to add
value to the company. I will obtain my Bachelors Degree
in Logistics Management in 2014 and plan to further my
studies in the area of supply chain management. My
long term goal is to obtain Certification in Production and
Inventory Management (CPIM) and Certification in Supply
Chain Profession (CSCP).
What does your portfolio entail? What are your key
responsibilities?
As a Distribution Administrative Controller, I am
responsible for the smooth running of the Distribution
administration department, and ensuring our inventory is
well managed. My key responsibilities include the planning
of exports loading, daily scheduling of loads, managing
finished goods inventory and distribution processes. I am
also a Quality Champion and Edge Leader for Distribution.
What is your modus operandi? Is it aligned to the AEL

What are your interests/ hobbies/ sporting activities

I am a regular church goer and a dedicated mother. So

some free time to myself I catch up on my reading and

agreements with our internal and external customers.
Confidence: Understanding my KPAs and striving for
process efficiency enables me to carry out my duties with
diligence and a higher degree of confidence.
Courage: I’m occasionally required to make tough and
unpopular decisions. These decisions require courage
and conviction. My understanding of courage is having the
ability and willingness to do the right thing no matter how
difficult it is.
Care: My leadership role invariably requires that I show
care for people and the things they care about to ensure
that they know that what they do is just as important
as what I do. This improves communication and boosts
morale and productivity.
Do you see yourself as a leader or a team player?
I don’t believe you can be a good leader without being a
team player. Team effort is crucial in rallying employees
behind a specific goal and in achieving our business
objectives. I’m a team player with leadership ambitions.
Strong leadership is required to manage teams and my
current role enables me to perform some leadership
duties.
Tell us something interesting about yourself?
I am a mentor for young girls in an outreach programme
called Goddess Girls which focuses on previously
