Session B10: Finding Fit: Embedding Career Planning into CTS Courses
CTS courses provide a great opportunity for students to try new things, develop new skills
and learn about themselves. As a result, CTS courses embed the opportunity to engage
students in their own career planning. As part of the expected outcomes for your CTS course,
how can you present career planning in a way that is meaningful to students? Career planning
starts with self-awareness; answering the question “Who am I?”. This session will introduce
you to a hands-on, interactive self-assessment tool that you can use to help students identify
their main interest preferences. Then learn how the six interest preference categories of the
self-assessment “fit” with your CTS course. The link between your CTS course and your

process! This session will be fun, interactive AND provide usable classroom resources to
support student learning and outcomes.

Session C2: Teaching CSE Courses Through Game Programming
This session looks at how some of the CSE modules can be taught using game programming
as a focal point. I have developed two five credit courses using this approach. We‟ll look at
common game mechanics that can be used to teach programming concepts and skills found in
the CSE outcomes. I have extensive notes that walk students through how to create examples
of keyboard control, invisible walls, collision detection, animation, etc. Students apply what
they have learned to new situations in the assignments and test. Project modules give students
time to practice their skills while allowing them to express themselves creatively.
Collaboration during larger projects is facilitated by special software used in the lab. I hope
to make this session as hands on as possible. All of the materials used in my courses will be
made freely available as well.

Session C9: From Here to Career in Less Than a Year!
There is little doubt that 21st Century workers require post-secondary education, but not
everyone has the time, money or desire to invest two to four years (or more!) in a diploma or
degree program after high school. Some students are looking for job and skill-specific
training which can be completed in months rather than years. Join Jason Ragan and Diane
Duffy, Career and Employment Consultants with Alberta Employment and Immigration, as
they highlight some short-term training options available at Alberta colleges, technical
institutes and private vocational schools. This interactive session will identify sample
occupations from several different sectors which all have training options at Alberta post-
secondary institutions. Also included will be a discussion of both the benefits and the
drawbacks of short-term training. Join this session and discover the “one year or less”
segment of the post-secondary spectrum!
