Here is one of the most popular decks that I like from Akai's models.
Have restored many GX-4000 D and people has been very satisfied what this deck can do.
There was also another model available with Dolby GX-4000 DB.

One single motor and beltdriven capstan using a flat belt.
Counter is also beltdriven and located on the right
Also have a automatic shutoff sytem when the tape is ending the capstan motor shuts off with a micro switch located behind the faceplate.
With the faceplate removed you can see the Idler-wheels that engage to the capstan pulley depending if the lever is in Play or the other Fforward/Rewind is used.
The black Idler-wheel to the left of the capstanpulley when Rewind is set by the lever, the black Idlerwheel goes against the capstan pulley + white plastic wheel to next step engage the
Left reeltable for Rewinding the tape.
On Fforward the small upper black Idler-wheel goes against the Right Reeltable + capstan pulley to engage.
Also on Playmode the upper black Idler helps the tape to wind up on the the R-reeltable but on the lower point of the reeltable.
At the same time the pinchroller engage to the capstan axel to feed the tape at exact speed over the head-assembly.
The capstan axel is controlled by the capstanmotor and beltdriven belt around the fly-wheel.
When speed sleeve is mounted it makes the speed raise up to 7-1/2 instead for 3-3/4.
Akai Metal-reel R7-M was a extra option.
