Aluminium is the primary aircraft material and it comprises of about 80% of an aircraft's unladen weight. Around 43% of the mass of a seat compared to other materials as shown in the figure above. Its combination of lightness, strength and workability makes it the ideal material for mass-produced commercial aircraft. Overall it helps save weight and increase fuel efficiency directly and indirectly sometimes by saving need for painting due to its anti-corrosion property. High-strength alloys like 7075 are generally used to strengthen aluminium aircraft structures. Polyurethane, Neoprene, Silicone and Polythelene are the different materials used for foam cushions in the aircraft seats. Fire resistant polyester, nylon, cotton and leather are primarily used as upholsteries covering the foam cushions and also as seat covers. The upholstery is put over the fire-blocking textile layer.
