INSPECTION INSTRUCTIONS FOR MODEL 45MA AIR STARTER

CONTROL MODULE

1. Before Inspection

Be sure to release the air pressure of the system before setting about the

inspection.

When the starting power voltage of the air starter 45MA is 24VDC, refer to

Fig.1.below. When the voltage is lOOVDC refer to Fig.2.

Control Module for 24VDC: Part Number 2-24775-005/ Yanmar Part No. 146673-77191

Control Module for 100VDC: Part Number 2-24775-005-1/Yanmar Part No.146673-77211

2. Inspection.

2-1. Trouble: The air starter does not start even with the application of the

normal air pressure.

Measure: It is possible that no power is supplied to the control module.

Remove the screws at the input and output connectors (see Fig.2

below) and pull them out from the control module body. Check

that the power voltage is supplied to the input side connector

lead wire.

2-2. Trouble: Solenoid valve does not open even when the power is supplied to

the control module.

Measure:

CD Check the control module body:

Impress the power voltage to the plus (+) and minus (-) poles of

the input terminal and measure the voltage of the output

terminal. The function is normal when the power voltage as

impressed appears.

@ Check the solenoid valve:

Supply O.2MPa (2kg/cm2) air pressure to the NC (normal closed)

piping of the solenoid valve removed from the control module.

Impress DC12V between the terminals (no polarity) of the

solenoid valve, open it and check for the function. If the

solenoid valve is normal, replace the control module.

@ When the function of the solenoid valve is not normal:

YANMAA CO.,LTD. 2006. 2. 13R

Page 3: Air Starter

Remove the elbow, loosen two nuts of the solenoid valve, turn

the coil housing (with sealed in black resin) counterclockwise

for loosening and remove it from the (aluminum) valve body.

Loosen the three screws and check that the valve port is not

clogged with impurities. If it is clogged, clean the port and

check the function of the valve again according to the

instruction of ~ above.

• Cautions for Disassembly

CD The dimensions of this air motor are represented in the inch unit.

@ All bolts come with six holes. Apply LOCKTIGHT (screw bonding agent) to

the threads.

@ Lube oil is sealed in the sealing type bearing and the starter drive. Do not

wash these items.

@ Feed 80g specialized grease inside the reduction gear for lubrication. For

O-rings and other items, use AEROSHELL #6 or equivalent gease.

® The air motor can be disassembled largely into the drive housing (81), gear

box housing (66), ring gear (49), contained ring (18) and inlet housing (5).

Mark alignment marks on each part before disassembly.

SECTION 1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 GENERAL INFORMATION This manual provides complete instructions for servicing, parts replacement, and re-assembly of the TDI Turbostart Two™ Model 45M air starter. If there are questions not answered by this manual, please contact your TDI Turbostart Thl distributor or dealer for assistance. Illustrations and exploded views with parts indexing are provided to aid in disassembly and re-assembly.

The Model 45M is a turbine driven air starter with a preengage starter drive. It is best suited for diesel engines up to 1220 CID (20L). The Model 45M is designed for installation on engines which use an SAE 1, 2, or 3 mounting pad.

The Model 45M is suited to operate within a wide range of inlet air pressures, ambient temperatures, and control voltages. Tank pressure of 120 PSIG will generally provide reliable starting throughout the Model 45M operating range.

The Model 45M is designed for operation with compressed air. Small a.mounts of foreign matter or liquid in the air stream will normally not adversely affect the

-/

Model 45M. As with an other TDI TurbostartThl models, no lubrication is required in the supply air.

The Mode145M comes complete with a pilot air solenoid valve installed. The exclusive TDI Turbostart TwoThl electronic control module reads output shaft speed and shuts off air to the Model 45M inlet in case of an overspeed condition. This prevents excessive cranking speeds, which could damage the starter or waste compressed air.

You need to review the rest of this manual before attempting to provide service on the TDI Turbostart TwoThl Model 45M.

1.2 WARNINGS, CAUTIONS, & NOTES Throughout this manual, certain types of information will be highlighted for your attention:

WARNING - used where injury to personnel or damage to the equipment is likely.

CAUTION - used where there is the possibility of damage to the equipment.

NOTE - used to point out special interest infor mation.

NOTE THE MODEL 45M IS TO BE SERVICED ONLY BY AUTHORIZED AND PROPERLY TRAINED TDI TURBOSTARTrM DISTRIBUTORS, DEALERS, AND REPAIR STATIONS. DO NOT OPERATE THIS STARTER WITH COMPRESSED AIR UNLESS IT IS PROPERLY ATTACHED TO AN ENGINE AND WILL ENGAGE THE FLYWHEEL.

The TDI Turbostart Twonl Model 45M provides distinct advantages of size and efficiency as compared to electric motor, vane-type or other turbine-type air starters. It is important for the operator to properly install the Model 45M to receive full benefit of these advantages. Repair technicians or service organizations

TDI TURBOSTART TWD~ From TECH DEVELOPMENT

without turbine starter experience should not attempt to repair this machine until they receive factory approved training from TOI, or its representatives. Proper operation and repair of your TOI TUrOOstart Two™ will assure continued reliable and superior performance for many years.

WARNING The TOI Turbostart Twonl Model 45M must be installed and operated in accordance with the instructions given in the Installation and Operating manual. Failure to properly install the starter, or failure to operate it according to these instructions may result in damage to the starter or engine, or personal injury.

SECTION 2.0 DESCRIPTION OF BASIC GROUPS

2.1 GENERAL

The Model 45M can descriptively be grouped into four basic segments: (1) Inlet Housing - Nozzle I Valve Seat; (2) Turbine Housing; (3) Stage One Gear Carrier; and (4) Gearbox - Drive Housing. Section 3.0 Disassembly and Section 5.0 Assembly will generally follow the above mentioned groups for instruction.

CAUTION CAUTION The turbine housing a-ring (37) must not be lubricated. It is to be installed dry.

For overhaul, the turbine ball bearings (33) should be replaced.

All screw threads are treated at the factory with a fastener retention compound. Every screw, 1/4 inch diameter or larger, must have a drop of Loctite 290 applied to the threads before being re-used; screws smaller than 1/4 inch diameter must have a drop of Loctite 222 applied to the threads.

For torque values, refer to Table 4.
