Air Mask
™
MSA’s NEW FireHawk™ Air Mask is the premier self-contained breathingapparatus for the municipal fire service.Designed with the input of hundreds offirefighters, and including a multitude ofMSA’s exclusive features, the newFireHawk Air Mask truly embodiesSafety, Simplicity, and Reliability.
SAFETY –
Understanding that “protecting the protector” has been our calling for 90 years, MSA works hard to providefirefighters with the most safety features available on any SCBA. Listed here are just a few of them:
MSA’s patented Quick-Fill® Systemmakes every MSA SCBA capable of both receiving and donating air to firefighters in need. Although the NFPA standard requires all brands of SCBA to incorporate a receive-onlyRIC connection, only the MSA AirMask can make full utilization of thefitting with our exclusive transfilling capability.
MSA’s new ICM TxR AccountabilitySystem revolutionizes fireground safe-ty by combining the latest computersoftware with a high-performanceradio module and the field-proventechnology of MSA’s ICM TxIntegrated PASS.
An NFPA-compliant emergency egresssystem, integral to the SCBA waistbelt, is available as an option. ThisRescue Belt comes complete withKevlar line (50 ft. or 75 ft.) and rappelling hardware.
The all new Airframe™ carrier and harness comes standard, with large side handles and a central attachment point for pulling firefighters to safety in rescue scenarios.
MSA’s Ultra Elite® Facepiece isdesigned with a one-way check valveto prevent against cross-contaminationamong firefighters. Although regulators are shared among users, harmfulpathogens (SARS, hepatitis, flu virus)are kept within each individual-issue facepiece.
Wireless electronics add safety benefits by eliminating snag hazards that can accompany unnecessary wires on an SCBA.
CBRN positive protection is provided by MSA’s exclusiveTetraplex™ shield, which serves as the first line of defense in preventingchemical warfare agents from initial contact with the critically important second-stage diaphragm.
A new flow-control cylinder valvereduces the propulsive thrust of cylinders if they are accidentallyopened without proper restraint.
A buddy light on the ICM Tx lets fellow firefighters easily identify a firefighter that is in need of assistance. An additional light, located on the HUD Receiver, lets others know when you are low on air, reinforcing the distinct communicationof the Audi-Larm® warning device.
The Heads-Up Display has an automatic dimming feature in low ambient light to protect the visibility of firefighters.
Safety. Simplicity. Reliability.
SIMPLICITY –
The new FireHawk Air Mask has beendesigned to be simple to use and easy to own. Ease of use is accomplished with more user options than any SCBAon the market. Ease of ownership speaksto the Air Mask’s low cost of ownershipand MSA’s long-standing commitment to providing customers with the upgradeoptions they need. Here are just a few examples.
An optional swiveling lumbar padfor maximum freedom of movementand comfort when crawling or climbing.
A slide-to-connect or push-to-connect regulator attachment to meet the widest range of your preferences.
An integrated shut-off to prevent the loss of cylinder air when disconnecting the second-stage regulator.
An open-form cylinder band to allowrapid drop-in cylinder replacement, eliminating webbing adjustments andsecondary retaining clips.
Modular “stand alone” electroniccomponents for easy maintenance, with no wires to route and no complicated mounting brackets.
A power-saving mode on the heads-up display, which is set as a default to maximize battery life, with a continuous-on mode that can be selected to provide a constant LED display.
MSA’s new ICM® Tx Integrated PASScombines the safety features of the ICM 2000® Plus Integrated PASSwith the functionality of the Heads-Up-Display (HUD) transmitter in a new integrated PASS device that’sfully compliant with the latest requirements of the NFPA 1982-1998edition PASS standard.
Now a single component on the AirMask, firefighters benefit from a morecompact and lighter weight design (1/3 lb. less!) MSA has also standard-ized on a single battery type for boththe ICM Tx and HUD facepiece-mount-ed receiver - the commonly availableAA alkaline. Providing twice the life ofthe previous 9-volt and AAA batteries, the AA alkaline makes for fewerchange-outs and easy ownership.
A maintenance policy that delivers thelowest possible cost of ownership, based on the frequency of use of theAir Mask. For many departments, this means only conducting an annualflow test according to the NFPA 1852 standard. Even a busy departmentusing one cylinder every other daywould find the cost of maintaining anSCBA to be less than $5 per year.
State-of-the-art regulator designs that have among the fewest number of parts in the industry. The PR-14regulator has only 14 replaceableparts and the Firehawk MMR regulator has just 22! Both regulatorscan be maintained without the need of special tools.
NFPA and CBRN upgrade kits to help users meet the most current performance standards.

RELIABILITY –
Because your life depends on it, yourSCBA must be reliable. To help ensurecontinuous reliability of the Air Mask,MSA uses the most progressive design, manufacturing, and quality assurancepractices globally available. We alsokeep you informed to ensure the continued safe and reliable operation of your MSA Air Mask in the field. Listed are just a few key contributors to the Air Mask’s historic reliability.
In-house manufacturing of nearlyevery pneumatic, electronic, andstructural component of the Air Mask to ensure optimal quality and performance.
Use of the highest quality and gradesof stainless steel and aluminum withselect blends of Kevlar, rubber, andplastic molding compounds for thehighest strength and durability.
Teflon hard-coat anodized valve bodies to minimize the friction of internal components and maximizetheir service life.
Electronics designed for ruggednessand immunity to fire ground RFI(radio frequency interference). The Air Mask’s electronics must first pass through MSA’s stringent in-house RFI testing chamber toensure reliable operation before you use them.
100% inspection of all Air Mask critical attributes in production.
 An ISO 9001:2000 certified organization.
Responsible maintenance policiescommunicated to users by direct mail and over the internet, with the appropriate training and technicalupdates to help ensure the continued dependable operation of the Air Mask.
