Alzheimer’s Self Help Alliance (ASHA) Formed

Alzheimer’s Self Help Alliance ASHA is a network of families that had or have
family member living with Alzheimer’s or related Dementia. It was initiated in
August 2016 by Ms. Pramila Bajracharya Thapa, Chairperson of Hope
Hermitage Nepal. The Objectives of the Alliance are: (a) to promote social or
peer support among families of people living with Alzheimer’s and related
dementia (b) to promote wellbeing, care and support for the right of the
people living with dementia.

Ministry of Health organized an awareness program to mark World Alzheimer's
Day 2016.The event aimed to raise awareness among general people about the
diseases. According to the census of 2011, about 4.4 percent of population in
Nepal is estimated to be more than 65 years old, with a high percentage
diagnosed with Alzheimer's diseases. The World Alzheimer's Report released
by Alzheimer's Diseases International estimated that 47 million people lived
with dementia worldwide. The number is projected to increase to more than
131 million by 2050.

Drawing Competition on World without Ageism

Ageing Nepal in partnership with HelpAge International Nepal organized a
drawing competition with 7th grade students of N.k. Singh Memorial English
Preparatory School to mark the International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) 2016
on 29th Sept. 2016. An orientation class on IDOP 2016, its theme and relevancy
was conducted before on the spot drawing competition. About 37 students of
11 to 13 years age group participated in the competition. Out of the 37
drawings submitted, four were selected for 1st, 2nd, 3rdand 4th prizes. Bihani
Social Venture, a social organization, volunteered for the programme.

Elderly Suffer Delayed Distribution of SSA

Senior citizens including children, single women and differently able people of
Bhojpur district are not receiving Social Security Allowances (SSA) on time due
to the delayed distribution of allowances by authorities. They are worried if
they could not buy the necessary stuff in great festivals; Dashain and Tihar as
SSA is their only source of income.
Likewise, news published in Kantipur Daily of September 29 depicts the woes
of senior citizens of Makwanpur district as they are unable to receive
allowance before Dashain, a national festival. These beneficiaries are deprived
of SSA due to negligence of the concerned government staffs.

Elderly Eager to Get ID

Most of the senior citizens of Sunsari district did not have identity card (ID)
given by the Government to 60+ people. After they realized that ID is
mandatory to get government facilities and services, many elderly are now
busy in the process of getting it. “We are very busy in distributing ID. More
than 1,100 senior citizens received ID within a week” said Ms. Rashmi
Shrestha, Department of Women and Children.

Woes of Elderly

Kathmandu, September 9, 2016 A feature article by Shilpa Karna depicted the woes of elderly residing in
Pashupati Old Age Home (OAH), the only OAH run totally by the government of
Nepal. They are compelled to live within physical structures, i.e., building and
court yard, which are not elderly friendly and are in dilapidated condition.
Elderly complain about distantly located toilet from their rooms as the major
problem. Besides this, the narrow stairs, dark and narrow rooms make their
life miserable. Currently, 250 senior citizens are taking shelter in this OAH.

The government has started distributing aid for re-construction of house from
district headquarters to those who lost their houses in earthquakes last year.
But collecting fund has become a difficult task for elderly of Ramechhap district
as they have to walk for several days to reach District headquarter.
Octogenarian Maiti Thapa Magar became ill after collection of Rs.50,000 as the
first installment of Rs.200,000. She walked for two days to reach Manthali and
waited in line for hours to receive the grant. She is one of the examples of
many.
