Summary
Advanced Weapons Effects Test Capability
AWETC is… …a next generation instrumentation system that collects
precision arena warhead fragmentation and characterization data,
using a high- speed, high-resolution optical based TSPI scoring
system, which is used to determine collateral damage and lethality
for the JMEM community.
Provides 3D correlated fragment mapping and characterization
(mass/size/shape) by providing position, velocity vector, and
ballistic coefficient data per fragment.
3Distribution Statement A
AWETC Overview T&E Shortfall: No capability to correlate each
fragment with its velocity. CDE range
based on largest frag and largest measured velocity in frag
pattern
Required T&E End State: Correlate fragments which can cause
collateral damage with their respective velocities
Adversary Path
New CDE
Correlate individual fragments to their velocities Determine
physical characteristics of fragments

Benefits and Payoffs
Benefit to Warfighter
Implementation of Revolutionary Test Capability • Correlation of
individual fragments to their velocities
• Eliminates artificial pairing of unrelated fragment and
velocities • Provides the ability to cover a significantly higher
percentage of arena tests upper hemisphere
fragment distribution tracks • Provide more hemispherical coverage
(only ~5% currently covered with bundles versus 30%) •
Significantly reduce arena test data reduction time (Current:
months; AWETC: days) • Able to handle uniform/non-uniform and
irregularly shaped fragments • Robust arena test data will
provide:
• Determination of more realistic CDE ranges • Higher fidelity
lethality/effectiveness calculations
• Increased targeting opportunities • Reduced number of
re-engagements • Enhanced weapon selection options • Higher
lethality/effectiveness in theater
Accurately Measured Drag Properties Will Improve Lethality and CDE

• The AWETC solution presents a paradigm change for warhead
characterization Precise time dependent 3D position, 3D velocity,
ballistic coefficient, size, and mass estimates Automated data
reduction and post-test analysis for quicker testing 3D and virtual
reality visualization tools provide new insights into fragment
characterization Accurate Warhead Characterization is Critical to
Develop Precision Weaponeering Protocols
• Live-fire stereo tracking demonstrated with outstanding results
Track velocity estimates show good agreement with range legacy
measurements Accurate measured drag properties will improve
lethality and collateral damage modeling Size and mass measurements
accuracy is good on average Correlated dynamics and physical
