INTRODUCTION
In 1980 the North Carolina Archaeological Council published the first in aseries of bibliographies on the archaeology of North Carolina. Appearing asPublication 13 in the Council Series, "A gUide to research papers in thearchaeology of North Carolina on file with the Archaeology Branch of the NorthCarolina Division of Archives and History" contained 661 titles of papers, articles and reports. Most of these works, which cover archaeologicalprojects throughout the state, were unpublished. In 1981 and 1982, thebibliographic series was updated with Addenda I and II, Publications 14 and17, respectively. Since the publication of those bibliographies, the Branch'scollection of master's theses, articles and research and contract reports hascontinued to grow, prompting the compilation of the fourth bibliography,Publication 21. Addendum III represents the receipt, through the cut-off dateof September 30, 1983, of 230 titles by 100 authors.
As in the preceding bibliographies, the works listed represent a wide varietyof research topics, techniques, purposes and formats. The geographical focusvaries from surveys of one-acre tracts to overviews of physiographic regionscovering one-third of the state.
In each citation we have included the name and address of the individual, institution or agency that performed the work described in the report after"manuscript on file." This referencing format supplies the researcher withthe information needed to contact the individuals or institutions retainingnot only the manuscript cited, but also (presumably) and notes, photographsand artifacts generated by the project in question. Specific inquiries andrequests for copies should be addressed to these individuals or institutions.Addresses of most of the contributors have been abbreviated in the citations;a full list of contributors' addresses appears in the appendix.
The entry format has been adapted from that prescribed by the style gUide forAmerican Antiguity, (1979) to include pertinent information such as edition(e.g., draft, preliminary, final), pages, number of sites located and surveycoverage in acres (when provided by the reporter.) Believing that researchersare mOre concerned with place than author, we have changed the bibliographyformat from an alphabetical listing by author to a listing by physiographicregion and county. Entries under these headings are further alphabetized byauthor. Reports covering two or more counties are entered in full under thefiling county (typically the county of primary focus); cross references ofauthor, year and bibliography number are given under each additional county. An index of authors follows the county entries. The numbers listed after eachauthor are the bibliography reference numbers appearing to the right of eachtitle in the county section. Every writer, whether an individual orcontributing author, is listed. Style variants in the oiiginal reports suchas spellings of archeology and archaeology have been maintained.
The Archaeology Branch hopes that the reorganization of the bibliography willfacilitate its use by student, researcher and contracting archaeologist alike. We urge future contributors to the bibliography series to continue reportingin management summaries or abstracts such details as Clearinghouse number(when applicable and available; call the Archaeology Branch if in doubt),
number of sites located or investigated and survey acreage. These specificscan then readily be pulled for inclusion in the bibliography entries, thusproviding an abbreviated abstract for each report. These 'abstracts' will aidother researchers when preparing their own works.
The bibliography is intended to help you; the Archaeology Branch can onlyprOVide what is included in the reports. We welcume your thoughts and ideas;it is due in part to your suggestions that this bibliography, Addendum III,has been rearranged and expanded to include more report details than itspredecessors.
