INSIDE THIS ISSUE:
Greetings KHS Families and Friends-
Many have seen in the papers and in the news that the High School report cards are out for all districts in the state of Iowa. Although, you may see that we are in need of improvement; this report card certain-ly does not tell the whole story. There are many factors to a report card, some schools report out on areas that other schools do not. So it really is comparing apples to oranges. For instance, when you look at our proficiency numbers on the state test and our graduation rates, they are up there with other schools in our area.
I have seen our high school come a long way in the last year and a half. Here is a data point that you won’t see on the state report card. We are at 217 majors at this point in the year. In 2015-16 (the year before I entered the high school), we were at 636 majors and on av-erage 6.7/per day vs. 2.36/per day now. 93% of students are in the 0-1 range for referrals, 6.35% have had 1-5 referrals, and .65% of our students are at 6+ referrals (2015-16: 77.5% 0-1, 16.8% 1-5, and 6+ 5.7%). A school with a strong foundational culture is near the 90% range for students with 0-1 referrals. I am very proud of our school and our students in meeting those expectations!
Having said all of that, our work is never done, especially academical-ly. We are working on adding systems of support through Math and Reading labs for students that need them. Our teachers are working hard at deciphering data through MAP and the Iowa Assessments to identify students that are in need of extra support. As a parent or guardian you can help by letting your students know the importance of these tests. We are going to work to ensure that these results are available to you. Together we can make a difference in our students’ lives!
Thanks as always for your continued support,
Adam Magliari KHS Principal

SENIOR PICTURES
Senior Pictures must be turned in by March 14th to
Mrs. Thomas, yearbook adviser. If there is a prob-
lem, contact Mrs. Thomas before or after school at
ext. 1221. If you are not planning to have senior por-
traits taken, contact Mrs. Thomas and she will take
your senior pictures for you free of charge.
It’s PDA AD Time!!!
As you know, the yearbook staff provides
parents with the option of purchasing a
personal ad for their graduating senior. We
also encourage any group, organization,
acquaintance, or family member to ex-
press friendship, love, or congratulations
to their favorite students, seniors, etc. You
may purchase any size you like. The year-
book staff reserves the right for final edit-
ing decisions due to space or taste issues.
SUGGESTED OPTIONS:
1. Parent for their seniors.
2. Seniors for their senior friends.
3. Groups for their senior members.
(i.e. band for all band seniors)
4. Underclassmen for their senior friends.
5. Any student/parent may purchase a
PDA ad to celebrate the completion of an-
other school year.

IMPORTANT REMINDER: When Keokuk Commu-
nity School District has a two hour delay on
Wednesday (professional development days),
there will be no Torrence morning Pre-K, no
school breakfast and George Washington will
dismiss at 2:50pm, Hawthorne, KMS and KHS
at 3:00pm, just as they would on a Monday,
Tuesday, Thursday or Friday. Thank you for your
support!
Physical Education & Personal Strength Absences
Because Physical Education and Personal Strength
are participation-based classes, it is important that
students are in class each day. Students missing a
day of PE have the opportunity to make that day up
on the early out Wednesdays.
If students are gone for a school-related event or
have a medical excuse from a doctor, they will not
be required to make up the absence. Other ar-
rangements can be made if students cannot get
the absence made up on the early out
Wednesdays.
