Bipasha Basu may haveearned rave reviews forher performance in Raaz3, a largely female

oriented film. But, the actor feelsthere is a long way to go beforeheroines get their due inBollywood. “It’s a very hero cen-tric industry and it’s going to bedifficult to break through that.When a film has a female protag-onist, eyeballs become less. Wesee them as feminist films. IfBollywood stars making enter-taining films with females play-

ing a major part, then audiencewill be open up to the idea of seeing commercially entertain-ing films with the females doingsomething rather than just play-ing the hero’s love interest.”

Bipasha says that it is thisdilemma that is making all hercontemporaries “play safe”.“Everyone is going through thesame emotions that I have gonethrough, over the years. Try andlook out for something that hasmore meat. The articles aboutfemale actors always say thatthey are just pretty faces in thefilm. But think about it, howmany opportunities do we have?

If we don’t do that, what else dowe do? If you don’t play safe, howdo we last long? I’m one of thoselucky ones who have stayed afloatten years and choosing what Iwant to do. Everyone’s not solucky. The business is such thatmakes you play safe,” she says.

So, are heroines more competi-tive than heroes? “I don’t think so.Heroines are struggling in theirown space to make a mark aseverything is taken over by a hero.To find your space next to thehero and the heroism he’s doingon screen, to leave your markwith whatever minimum youhave, that is a struggle,” she says.
