THE FORM OF MODAL AUXILIARIES
The verbs in the list below are called modal auxiliaries. They are helping verbs that express a wide range of meanings (ability, permission, possibility, necessity, etc.) Most of the modal have more than one meaning.
AUXILIARY + THE SIMPLE FORM OF A VERB can, could, may, might, should, had better, Can (a) I can speak English. Must, will, and would are followed by the Could (b) He couldn´t come to class. By the simple form of a verb. May (c) It may rain tomorrow. They are not followed by to: Might (d) It might rain tomorrow. CORRECT: I can speak English. Should (e) Mary should study harder. INCORRECT: I can to speak English. Had better (f ) I had better study tonight. Must (g) Joe must see a doctor today. The main verb never has a final -s. Will (h) I will be in class tomorrow. CORRECT: Olga can speak English Would (i) would you please close the door? INCORRECT: Olga can speaks English.
AUXILIARY + TO+ THE SIMPLE FORM OF VERB Have to (j) I have to study tonight. Have, have got, and ought are followed by have got (k) I have got to study tonight. an infinitive (to + the simple form of a verb).
