1 | LEGENDacouStac®
The acouStac® Variable Acoustic Banner is a motorized retractable banner that is used to control the acoustic reverberation time of a room.
acouStac® BannerThe banner consists of two parallel fabric panels made up of individual horizontal segments held together by stackers. Each stacker consists of two aluminum rails held apart by a series of clips. The stackers separate the two fabric panels at a constant dimension (depth) over the full height and width of the banner. The fabric chambers are 3” or 6” wide (formed by the stackers) and 6”, 11” or 15” tall (formed by the fabric segments).
Multiple banners can be linked together to operate from one machine.
The fabric is 26oz DFR Wool Serge or 25oz IFR Velour; available in standard or custom colors.
The individual fabric segments are removable to allow for cleaning and repair.
Standard panel size is up to 20ft wide and 20ft tall. Custom sizes available using custom machines and configurations.
The 6” stackers provide greater acoustic absorption and add 3” to the overall banner depth.
The acouStac® is certified by an independent laboratory insuring that the banner has been testedin accordance with the “Sound Absorption Coefficient by Reverberation Room Method” (ASTM C423-07).
acouStac® MachineThe machine consists of components that are engineered to the specific size and configuration of the banner.
Drums are positioned along the width of the banner and support the stainless steel lifting bands, which have a design factor of not less than 8:1. The lifting bands connect to the lifting channel at the bottom of the banner. This channel raises and lowers the acouStac® banner.
The heavy duty aluminum frame with removable top and side machine cover panels is constructed to allow easy access to the motor for service.
The acouStac® is equipped with a 208v 3 phase gearmotor with a minimum service factor of 1.25. The horsepower ranges from 1/3 HP to 3/4 HP depending on the size of the banner. The motor is capable of fixed speeds of nominal 20 - 24 fpm. The gearmotor is equipped with a fail-safe brake rated for 200% of the motor capacity.
A four position limit switch includes both up and down normal travel and over travel protection.
The acouStac® Motor Starter is a separate assembly. Starters may be in individual cabinets or grouped into a single motor control panel (MCP).

Accredited by the NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF STANDARDS ANDTECHNOLOGY, NATIONAL VOLUNTARY LAB ACCREDITATIONPROGRAM (Lab code 100404-0) FOR ACOUSTICAL TESTING SERVICES(selected test methods)
Laboratory Report No : 76-0056-01 Date: 4/18/2008
Specimen: Mock-up of a 3” and a 6” ACOUSTAC acoustic banner drapery specimeninside an enclosure.
Client Pook, Diemont & Ohl, Inc.701 E. 132nd Street / Bronx, NY, 10454
Test Type / Standard : Sound Absorption Coefficient by Reverberation Room Method (ASTM C423-07)
Objective: Obtain random-incidence absorption coefficient for specimen.
Description :
An acoustic mock-up using a drapery specimen described as “ACOUSTAC acoustic banner with 26 ounce wool serge” by the client was assembled inside IAC’s 10,000 cu.ft. reverberation room. The mock-up consisted of one12’x5’ ACOUSTAC curtain specimen provided by the client inside a 3/4” thick plywood enclosure with interiordimensions of 12’x5.04’x16” deep. The mock-up was mounted vertically on one of the reinforced steel walls of the reverberation room. The drapery specimen was hung 6” from the back wall of the plywood enclosure. The drapery specimen was hung from two ½” EMT conduit pipes at the top of the plywood enclosure.
Two drapery specimens of differing thicknesses were tested: one specimen was 3” thick; the other was 6” thick.Further design and construction details are the proprietary information of the client.
Clearances between the plywood enclosure and the reverberation room’s wall and floor were sealed with 2” wide duct tape and duct sealer (“plumber’s putty”). A visual inspection determined that the ACOUSTAC specimen consisted of a drapery made of two layers of fabric material, identified by the client as “26 oz. wool serge,” separated by 3” or 6” rigid plates about every 12” along the height of the specimen. Actual specimen dimensions were 12’x5’x3” and 12’x5’x6”. The specimen weight was 30.5 lbs for the 3” sample and 42.5 lbs for the 6” sample.
IAC’s reverberation chamber is of reinforced steel construction with a rectangular shape and an approximate volume of10,000 cu.ft. and total surface area of 3,000 sq.ft. Three 8’x4’ diffusers (both faces are reflective) are placed throughoutthe chamber for sound diffusion purposes. The sound field was sampled with a rotating microphone (60” radius) and abroadband “pink” noise signal.
Test results are listed in Table 1.
