How to Have Your BEST Summer!
• Spend time in the sun
• Avoid chemicals
• Sweat and detox
Spend Time in the Sun
• Rates of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, have been rising for at least the last three decades
• Distribution of the lesions reported did not correspond to the sites of sun exposure
• Several studies have confirmed that appropriate sun exposure actually helps prevent skin cancer
…But What about Skin Cancer??
Ultraviolet Light: UVA vs. UVB
• UVA• Penetrates deeper
• Causes more free radical damage
• Present during most hours of the day
• UVB• Stimulates the production of Vitamin D
• Mostly present during mid-day, very low in mornings and evenings
Vitamin D
• Anti-carcinogenic (anti-cancer) and anti-melanoma properties
• Provides protection from damaging effects of UV rays
• …plus many more health benefits!
Recommendations:• Spend time in the sun during midday (10:00am –
2:00pm)• Lighter skinned individuals will need 10 – 20 minutes
• Darker skinned individuals will need 30 – 40 minutes
• Produces roughly 10,000 IU of vitamin D
• Apart from this time period, apply sunscreen
• Supplement during the wintertime• Get you levels measured!! Ideal levels are between 60 –
80 ng/ml
• Most adults need to supplement with 5000 – 10,000 I.U.
• Make your own sunscreen!
What’s in Your Sunscreen??
• The Food and Drug Administration has not reviewed evidence of potential hazards of sunscreen filters – instead it grandfathered in ingredients used in the late 1970s when it began to consider sunscreen safety
• Oxybenzone – high rates of skin allergy, endocrine disruptor
• Octinoxate – hormone activity (disrupts thyroid), behavioral alterations
Homemade Sunscreen:
Ingredients:
• 10 drops lavender (optional) **Do not use citrus oils
• 1 tbsp pomegranate oil
• 3/4 C coconut oil
• 2 tbsp zinc oxide
• 2 tbsp shea butter
• Glass jar
Directions:
• Combine all ingredients except zinc oxide in a jar.
• Place a saucepan with 2 inches of water on stove over medium/low heat.
• Place jar in saucepan and stir contents until ingredients start to melt.
• Once all ingredients are combined, add in zinc oxide and stir well. Store in a cool place.
More recommendations:
• Keep an aloe plant in your house, if you burn cut it open and rub on the burn
• Make a hair mask out of coconut oil and apple cider vinegar to protect from drying effects of the sun
• Make a lip salt scrub with coconut oil, sea salt and limes (or lime essential oil)
• Naturally lighten your hair with lemon juice
