THE ELKS HORN Edgewater - New Smyrna Beach Elks Lodge #1557

ELKS LADIES Shirleen Donald, President
The April meeting was encouraging with nineteen members in attendance. Our Thursday, May 5th meeting will be a Mother’s Day program, so bring your daughter, friend, etc., you might receive a beautiful plant and/or gift.
Our meetings will continue to be on the first Thursday of every month at 11:30 am; if you need a ride call a member. Bless all of you. Hope to see you all at our next meeting.
Members All,
Happy Mother’s Day, to all us moms. Chef John is preparing a “Mother’s Day Tea” on Saturday, May 7th from 11 am – 2 pm; it was a huge success last year…so don’t miss it. We are having a Kentucky Derby party on Saturday, May 7th.. beginning at 3:00 ‘til whenever; we’re serving pull pork sandwiches. We will have our fun races on our pool table; we also bet on the horses…which makes the actual race, loads of fun. Ladies wear your prettiest hat…..there will be a prize for the winner . We are missing all our wonderful members and guests who live up north…so it’s down to business to figure out what our regular members would like for food and entertainment; give us a call or come to a House Committee meeting and give us some ideas.
Remember, everyone, be proud of being an Elk and show a positive attitude to all; make a
difference to those around you with that big happy face I talked about, last month
Fraternally,
Bobbi Savasuk

Balloting on Candidates May 4th Orientation May 11th Initiation May 18th
_______________________________________________ We have three candidates awaiting initiation into our order, Timothy Meade, Kevin Keyser Ziegler and Deborah Keyser. Lodge officers and committee chairpersons, please make every effort to attend our next orientation and, be prepared to give a brief description of your committee and chair position in the lodge. Many of you still have not renewed your membership for 2016-2017. Just remember, your card entitles you to all the rights and privileges of the lodge, that also includes receiving your monthly bulletin. Our Lapsation Committee will be contacting those members who are delinquent. When filling out an application form for a prospective member, please make sure all the required information is filled in. Recently, some of the applications have been missing pieces of information on the back of the form. New and current members, please show your support by attending this year’s East Central District Vice President visitation dinners. The 2016-2017 visitation is posted in this bulletin with all the dates. Keep in mind the dress code is casual….no shorts, no flip-flops, no tank-tops. Sign-up sheets will be posted in the social quarters; email blasts will be sent out, as well.

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER In this column, we remember the sickness and distress of our members. Thankfully, I have heard very little this month and I have no Lodge of Sorrow to report.
Please remember Dick Braden who is under the care of VITAS at home. He is doing as well as can be expected. Sally and Debbie are taking good care of him. Also, Chuck Rutty, is still in therapy after his fall off the roof. Watch out for those ladders, Chuck!
Keep these people in your thoughts and prayers.
All of us need to remember our motto," The faults of our members, we write upon the sand, their virtues upon the tablets of Love and Memory! Also, do not talk about other people or gossip about them. Nothing hurts people more than to overhear a careless statement which generally has been repeated over and over growing in ugliness. This is certainly not "The Golden Rule" and I hope not the Elk way. I know we have lost members this way.
I have never written a column like this before and I hope it was right. If you know of anyone that we should remember, please let me or the secretary know.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MESSAGE
On behalf of all the Board of Directors, we would like
to take this opportunity to wish all the Mothers of
Edgewater-NSB Lodge a very Happy Mother’s Day.
And …….
As we get ready to celebrate Memorial Day, with our
family and friends, let us take pause and thank all
our veterans, men and women, who have served and
continue serve our great country, we, as Elks and the
American people, “Thank You For Your Service.”

News from Lodge Beautification
WOW! Spring is here and the trees are green and
flowers are blooming. It is time to spruce up the
flowers at the lodge. I am pleased to announce that
Janet Garvin will be joining me this year. We will be
weeding, trimming and fertilizing. Then we will be
adding some new flowering plants and shrubs to
brighten it up.
We get many helpful suggestions and we are
always thankful, but it is difficult because of the
deep shade by the entrance and poor soil. You can
really help by some small donations to help us buy
top soil, plants and shrubs.
Time to get busy!
Thanks, Marci
FROM THE APRIL ISSUE—MISPRINT IN EMAIL ADDRESS
As Co-Chair, Rick and I would like to extend our thanks to every-
one who participated in this years CASH BASH, it was a great
success. We had a gross receipt of approximately $11,975.00
out of which we requested (on the floor) $5,254.00 be set aside
for improvements to the Banquet Hall and the Members
Lounge. Again, this could not have been achieved without your
participation. Looking toward the future we expect to surpass
this next year. If anyone has any suggestions as to how we could
better improve this Charity Fund Raiser you can respond in con-
fidence to [email protected]. Again thank you for your
support.

Chisholm Elementary School, one of our partner schools, has won a state Championship in the Odyssey of the Mind competition. This is a STEM contest. They are now going to the World Finals at Iowa State Univer-sity. WOW! WAY TO GO!!!
Now they are raising money for their trip. Yes, donations would be fine but ...... They are doing it themselves by having a Yard Sale in their Gym on April 30th 7:00-3:00. All they are asking is for us to bring items for their sale. WE CAN DO THAT, RIGHT? Bring the items the school office M-F 7:30-3:00, 557 Ronnoc Lane, NSB or bring them to the Lodge and I will take them over! ALSO come and shop! Thanks, Marci

Over the next several months the Lodge PER Association will present a
variety of the 11:00 O’Clock Toast in the Horn Newsletter.
The great variety of O'Clock Toasts, including the Jolly Corks Toast,
makes it clear that there was no fixed and official version until 1906-
1910. Given our theatrical origins, it was almost mandatory that the pre
1900 Elks would be expected to compose a beautiful toast extempora-
neous at will. Regardless of the form, however, the custom is as old as
the Elks.
The Original Jolly Corks Toast
Now is the hour when Elkdom's tower is darkened
by the shroud of night.
And Father Time on his silver chime Tolls off each
moment's flight.
In Cloistered halls each Elk recalls His Brothers
where're they be, And traces their faces to well-
known places in the annals of memory.
Whether they stand on a foreign land Or lie in an
Earthen bed, whether they be on the boundless
sea with the breakers of death ahead.
Whate'er their plight on this eerie night Whate'er
their fate may be.
Where ever they are be it near or far they are
thinking of you and me.
So drink from the fountain of fellowship to the
Brother who clasped your hand and wrote your
worth in the rock of the earth and your faults upon
the sand. TO OUR ABSENT BROTHERS
I hope our members enjoy reading the variety of the 11:00 O'Clock
Toast that will be in the Horn over the next several months.
