A MONTHLY NEWSPAPER SERVING THE ITALIAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY
September ushers in the fall season
and brings with it different cultural
rites that have been passed down
from generation to generation. For Italians
vendemmia, which is the harvesting of
grapes that will go to make that year’s wine,
is the tradition that ushers in autumn. The
vendemmia, though cultural in nature, is in
reality an agricultural event.
The rites of the vendemmia also have
something ancestral about them. For over
3,000 years on the Italian peninsula, people
have been cultivating vines. The vendemmia
starts with grape-picking and is one of the
most celebrated occasions in Italy; the exact
dates vary every year and throughout the
country depending on when the grapes
are ready. Collecting the grapes has always
been the same work. It can’t be done with
machines, so the workers today do exactly
what the inhabitants of the Greek colonies in
southern Italy did when Rome was still just
a small provincial town in Italy. The work
is fairly difficult, tedious and very sticky. To
make matters worse, the long days under the
Mediterranean late summer sun takes a toll
on pickers’ energies.
The lunchtime break is often an
assortment of local meats, cheeses, and of
course fresh bread. Finally at the day’s end
after hours of hard work among the grape-
vines, the harvesters share a feast prepared
just for the occasion, somewhat similar to
American and Canadian Thanksgivings with
its show of appreciation for the year’s grape
harvest. Then the workers gather around
campfires to chat, tell their stories, finish up
the previous year’s wine and have a jolly time
before heading to bed.
Regarding the image conjured up on the
grape-stomping episode of “I Love Lucy,”
readers should know that even many
amateur winemakers use machines to crush
grapes. You can still witness the traditional
practice of stomping grapes in some places,
but this generally occurs at a Sagra dell’uva,
fall time grape festivals, including one the
town of Gambassi Terme in Tuscany.
So if you’re planning a trip to Italy,
vendemmia time is the perfect time, as you’ll
enjoy the countryside immersed in its love-
liest activity of the year.
If you can’t be in Italy for vendemmia,
here are two local events:
On Sunday, Oct. 11, The Societa` Da
Vinci will hold at its annual Vendemmia
at Bellevue State Park in Wilmington. The
Vendemmia offers their signature gravy
contest as well as one of the largest wine-
making competitions on the East Coast.
Tickets are $50 in advance, $60 at the gate.
Order tickets online at www.societadavinci.
com or call (877) 731-5790.
On Sunday Oct. 4 from 2-6 p.m.,
Philadelphia’s Vendemmia Foundation
observes the ritual. To learn more, call (215)
551-3859 or visit their website at vendem-

“Advertising with Main Line Today magazine has given Sorella Boutique the ‘buzz factor’ that is so important in
the retail world. We constantly hear people tell us, ‘We read about you; we saw your picture; we heard you won an
award; etc.’ The day after we have an ad in mLT, we invariably have a customer come to Sorella from the main
Line area just because of the ad. Thank you for making us well known and for bringing us new friends.”

An audit statement offers detailed information about a publication’s circulation. it verifies that Main Line Today is reaching the number of readers we claim, and covering the area we claim. magazines not audited may ask you to rely on the number of copies that are printed. Be careful. The number of copies printed or the “size of the print run” is not an indication of the number of readers.
