Separators
Separators designed for use in the natural gas industry are mechanical devices, which remove
liquids from the natural gas stream. QBJ separators are primarily manufactured in two basic styles
Vertical Separators are well suited for handling
large liquid slugs, solids, and surging flow
conditions. In addition, vertical separators require
less floor space. In standard vertical up-flow
designs, the gas volume is limited due to re-
entrainment because of the counter current flow of
gas (up) and liquid (down). Vertical units equipped
with specially designed vane mist extractors
eliminate re-entrainment and have an increased
gas capacity.
Horizontal Separators are best suited for
streams with high gas-liquid ratios, constant flow,
and relatively low liquid surging. The gas transit time
is increased in horizontal separators, allowing
gravity more time to capture liquid particles. If
foaming is anticipated, predesigned de-foaming
sections can be added to release entrained solution
gas from the foam. Due to the large interfacial area
available between phases, horizontal units are best
suited for 3-Phase (liquid-liquid gas) separation.

Molecular Sieve Units
The basic function of a Molecular Sieve Unit is to
remove water vapor from natural gas. A mole sieve
unit is a solid dessicant dehydration system, which
possesses the physical characteristics to adsorb water
from natural gas and produces the lowest water
dewpoint temperatures.
QBJ has been designing, engineering, and
manufacturing molecular sieve units for 30 years and
has installed units to dehydrate up to 200 MMSCFD
both domestically and internationally.

TEG Dehydration Units
Water vapor is one of the most common impurities found in a natural gas stream. A dehydration unit is
used to remove water vapor from natural gas streams to meet an outlet pipeline specification, which is
normally 7lb/MMSCF or less. The most common method used for dehydrating natural gas includes the
absorption of water vapor in the liquid desiccant, Triethylene Glycol (TEG) or Diethylene Glycol (DEG).
Our standard dehydrators produce a dew point depression of 50°F to 110°F. Higher dew point
depression capability is available for specific applications.
Reasons to Remove Water Vapor From Natural Gas:
Prevents the Formation of Hydrates
Prevents the Reduction of Line Capacity
Eliminates Corrosion in Pipelines
Maximizes the Overall Efficiency of Pipelines
QB Johnson Manufacturing, Inc. continues to
be a leader in designing and manufacturing
dehydration units and has shipped over 1,000
units throughout the world. QBJ has the
ability to engineer and manufacture dehydration units ranging from 60MSCFD up to and including 450
MMSCFD and has designed units that have exceeded pipeline specifications of less than 1 pound per
MMSCF.
Thermal Oxidizer
QB Johnson's thermal oxidizer units are designed to continuously incinerate still column effluents from
glycol dehydrators. QBJ's Thermal Oxidizer designs are based on a two second retention time and are
able to meet all current environmental requirements for the destruction of BTEX.
QBJ Thermal Oxidizer Units Include:
Inlet Effluent Flash Arrestor
Effluent Heater
Refractory Lined Combustion Chamber and Stack
Forced Draft Burner System
Stack Temperature Control Blower
Purger Control Panel

Amine Units
The hydrocarbon treating process includes the
removal of contaminants from natural gas. Gas
treating or "sweetening" are both terms used to
describe the various processes for the removal of
certain contaminants, primarily hydrogen sulfide
(H2S) and carbon dioxide (CO2), from natural gas or
hydrocarbon liquids. CO2 and H2S are also termed
“acid gases” due to the formation of an acidic
solution when absorbed in water. In addition to
CO2and H2S, the sulfur acids, carbonyl sulfide (CS2),
carbon disulfide (COS), and the mercaptan family
(RSH), when present in sufficient quantities, are also
candidates for removal with specific amines. QBJ
utilizes primary (MEA or DGA), secondary (DEA),
and tertiary (MDEA) alkanolamines.
QB Johnson Manufacturing, Inc. has over 40 years
of experience designing and manufacturing amine units. QBJ can engineer, design, and manufacture
treaters for any application and custom designs all units to fit customers' needs. QBJ has experience in
designing new amine treaters from 3 GPM up to and including 600 GPM. All units are modular and skid
mounted in order to reduce field installation time and costs to our customers.
Why Remove CO2and H2S From Natural Gas?
Toxicity
Corrosive to Equipment
Prevents Hydrate Formation
Gas plants, also known as Gas Liquid Recovery Units, recover marketable hydrocarbon liquids from
gas streams and control sales gas BTU content. Additional benefits include eliminating condensation
and the two-phase flow in transmission pipelines while also providing gas with a consistent heating
value for fuel to compression and combustion turbines.
The simplest form of liquid recovery units utilizes heat exchangers and an external refrigeration
system to cool the gas and separate the hydrocarbon liquids. The separated gas is cross exchanged
with the inlet gas for initial cooling. The separated liquid is then level controlled to a stabilizer where
the temperature and pressure is controlled to produce a specified vapor pressure product. QBJ gas
plants are designed to use mechanical refrigeration, J-T refrigeration, and our proprietary mixed
refrigerant system.
