The main mission of INGV is monitoring geophysical phenomena in both
the solid and fluid components of the Earth.
INGV is devoted to 24-hour countrywide seismic surveillance, real-time
volcanic monitoring, early warning and forecast activities.
State-of-the-art networks of geophysical sensors deliver a continuous flow of
observations to the acquisition centres of Rome, Naples and Catania, where
specialized staff analyse data and provide immediate communications for
civil defence purposes.
INGV operates in close coordination with the Ministry of University and
Research and with Civil Protection authorities, both at national and local level.

Italian active volcanoes

Mount Etna Volcano
Catalogue Number: 0101-06 (SmithsonianInstitution, Global Volcanism Program)Elevation above the sea-level: 3330 m in 2007Location: 37.734°N, 15.004°ETotal surface: 1200 square kilometers
Etna is the largest and tallest volcano in Europe, and one of themost active volcanoes on Earth. Its eruptions occur both at thesummit, where, at present, there are four craters, and from itsflanks, down to a few hundred meters above the sea-level.
The four summit craters are: the Voragine and the Bocca Nuova, formed in 1945 and 1968, respectively, within the Central Crater;the Northeast Crater that originated in 1911 and is currently thehighest point on Etna (3330 m); and the Southeast Crater, born in1971, which has recently been the most active of the four craters. This configuration strongly contrasts with that of one century ago, when at the summit of Etna there was only the Central Crater.

The INGV – OE Control Room
This is the “Control Room” in Catania. All signals coming from remote multidisciplinary stations are transmitted to a unique Monitoring Centre in Catania. Researchers and on duty staff analyse data real time.
In case of significant events procedures immediately are activated.

risks and intervention procedures that are common to the whole system.
The Department coordinates the response to natural disasters,
catastrophes or other events - events of C type - that intensity and
extent, should be faced with extraordinary powers and means.
Moreover, also in agreement with the regional governments and local authorities, working in the
drafting of legislation on the prevention of risks and regulatory measures needed to cope with
disasters and minimize damage to people and property.
