Learners will be given class time to complete their piece, but unfinished pieces as of end of class on Wednesday will become homework and due on Thursday, January 10. We will also move forward in our learning of the colonization of the New World. Our first lesson will be on the lost colony of Roanoke, a lesson that always leaves the learners baffled and intrigued!

Spanish The learners have been learning Calendar Words, and this week they are studying these words to get ready for the first quiz about time-related terms. The learners have been making sentences to learn to conjugate 8 verbs in the present tense (amar, comer, hacer, hablar, llegar, poder, preparer, tener).

STEM This week in STEM, scientists will continue learning about renewable and nonrenewable resources. Using our lens as scientists and Catholics, we will explore how we can use our knowledge to be good stewards of God’s creation. We will examine air pollution by designing and observing particle collection cards. Scientists will also find ways to reduce and reuse waste to create a mini compost kit.  Please send in a clean, liter-sized bottle with your child’s name in sharpie this week if he or she did not bring it in prior to break. We will use this bottle for a special waste-reduction project on Wednesday. Thank you in advance!

Special Friends Day on January 25. Learners will make posters to be hung in the school hallways, film ads for Monarch TV, man the booths at Open House and Grandparents Day, etc. Students will learn more about our grade’s work to raise money for this wonderful organization this week in their religion, ELA, and science classes.  This week in Religion class, learners will finally begin working on the final draft of their Holy Trinity symbol. After completing their drawing, learners will type up a short paragraph about why they chose the object they chose and explain how they see it as a symbol of The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit. Learners will be given class time to complete their project and paragraph, but unfinished work as of end of class on Thursday will become homework and due on Friday, January 11. Finished projects will be on display at Open House, so be sure to come by and see the creativity!

Health The next unit that we are going to learn about focuses on physical fitness, specifically the 5 main components of fitness. Learners will be able to research and create fitness activities that deal with cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, body composition and flexibility.

Learners will be working on a components of fitness activity project over the next several weeks and will present this project to the class. Each learner will get a chance to pick an activity and describe how this activity has 4 out of the 5 main components of fitness (cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength and flexibility). They will also get to share where they do the activity, why they like it and see how different areas of health such as mental, social and spiritual health can be included into the activity.

Makerspace  We are continuing to work on our green screen projects! In science the learners have been learning about ecosystems and we want to reinforce that in Makerspace! In groups, the learners will choose an ecosystem to focus on. They will create a short video based on relevant animals and landscapes found in their ecosystem.

   Study Skills Enrichment

This last full week before Christmas Break, we worked on collaborating in groups. We numbered off so that we were with people that we aren’t typically sitting next to. We discussed listening to everyone’s ideas, then chose a writer and storyteller. Their instructions were to write the story of Mary and Joseph arriving in Dana Point in 2018 to have a baby. The stories will be posted in the hall outside Rm. 230 in the Fifth Grade hall through Epiphany. Please stop by to read a few!

Study Skills Tip of the Month By Tedda Duhey / Learning Support

To be a strong learner, it takes asking appropriate questions, participating in class and with our peers, listening closely to responses, and continuing to pay attention … even if the content seems boring. The KEY is to make the topic seem less boring! Picture a movie or story in your head, or create Jeopardy questions as your teacher is explaining new information. Make your learning interactive! Your mind will be buzzing, but it will be focused on what you are supposed to be learning … not boring at all.

Parents, as you decorate, make cookies, and share in the gift God gave to us at Christmas, have conversations with your child(ren). Make sure their time away from school is not all about video

games and presents, but moments with you. Make it interactive! Play a game, involve everyone, ask questions and encourage your child(ren) to ask questions, listen, pay attention … AND LOVE!

Merry Christmas! Wishing you all many Blessings to you and yours this Season and in the New Year!!
