SAICE Technical DivisionsSAICE has nine technical divisions to promote its mission to be a learned society and to encourage for all ourmembers to strive for excellence in civil engineering.
1. Information TechnologyTo promote the science and art of the use ofelectronic computers in the field of civil engineering by the dissemination of information relating to electronic computational procedures and apparatus, and by holding formal and informal meetings relating to these subjects.
2.Railway and HarbourTo advance and expand the science and practice ofcivil engineering in the provision and maintenance of facilities for transport by railways, road and motor services, harbours, airways and pipelines, and to promote the civil engineering profession in the above fields.
3.WaterThe promotion of the art and science of waterengineering. The division also seeks to promotehydraulic engineering research and to encouragestudents to study in the field. The division further-more interacts closely with the South African National Committee of the Engineering Committee of Oceanic Resources in promoting coastal engineering.
4.EnvironmentalEnvironmental Engineering is about the impact studies of the social and natural environment. This decision focus on the impact of civil engineering on the environment and create an effective balance between the two.
5.GeotechnicalTo promote expertise, co-operation amongstscientists and engineers, to encourage the interchangeof knowledge and ideas, to disseminate the results ofresearch work or innovative construction techniquesin the field of soil mechanics and foundationengineering and working with engineering geologistsin the allied field of rock mechanics. To foster theapplication of safe, economic, practical and moderngeotechnical methods in South Africa.
6. TransportationTo advance the study, knowledge and applicationof engineering dealing with planning, design andoperation of highways, roads and streets, theirnetworks, terminals, abutting land and relationshipswith other modes of transportation.
7. StructuralTo advance the theoretical knowledge and practice ofstructural engineering, to encourage the improvementof standards and techniques, and to enhance thestanding of this branch of the profession. This divisionrepresents the interests of the SAICE StructuralDivision as well as the Institution of StructuralEngineers UK.
8. Project ManagementTo promote civil engineering through the contributionof sound project management principles, therebybridging the gap between “creators of value andsociety”. This division informs SAICE membersabout issues relating to SACPCMP and facilitatesan understanding of construction and projectmanagement philosophies related to engineeringprinciples and practices.
9. ICE-SAThis division represents the interests of the SAICE as well as the Institution of Civil Engineers UK. SAICEand the Institution of Civil Engineers (UK) have a jointcommittee to co-ordinate the services to membersbetween the two institutions. ICE-SA promotes thecivil engineering profession by ensuring that everybody understands the positive

• is not less than thirty-six years of age; and• has been a Corporate Member for at least five
years; the Collage of Fellows may in exceptional circumstances waive this requirement.
MembersA Member is a person who at the time of admission:
• is actively engaged in Civil Engineering;• either holds an academic qualification from a tertiary
educational institution recognised for this purpose by Council or is a corporate member of an engineering institution or society recognised for this purpose by Council; and
• is professionally registered with a statutory council or international body recognised for this purpose by Council.
Associate Members
An Associate Member is a person who:• does not satisfy the requirements for admission
as a Member but who has achieved a status in a profession which is comparable to that of a Member of the Institution and is connected with Civil Engineering to the extent that admission to membership in the opinion of the Executive Board will be in the interest of the Institution;
• is not eligible to be elected or admitted as a Corporate Member but who at the time of admission of an Associate Member is actively engaged in Civil Engineering and holds such academic qualifications as may be acceptable to Council, or has entered for and passed an ad hoc or other examination set by a panel of examiners nominated by Council; or
• holds an academic qualification from a tertiary educational institution recognised for this purpose by Council.
Student Members
A Student Member is a person who:• at the time of admission has a valid registration as a
full time student at a tertiary educational institution recognised for this purpose by Council, with the intention of obtaining an academic qualification in civil engineering recognised for this purpose by Council; or
• undergoes a regular course of training recognised for this purpose by Council.
