4Es - Intelligent Chemistry for Polyester
Sustainability and environmental issues are
becoming more and more important for consumers,
retailers, dyers, finishers and producers of textiles
along the whole value chain. The compliance
of dyes and chemicals with all kinds of various
textile standards (like GOTS, Oeko-tex, bluesign) is
already a must. And saving resources like water,
wastewater, energy, time or efficiency in general
links ecology and economy. Various processes
and applications are described, how by using
intelligent chemistry we can bring these 4E’s –
environment, efficiency, ecology and economy
– together. Even the textile consumer profits from
intelligent effect chemistry in home laundering,
saving natural resources through less frequent
washing or lower washing temperatures...”

Compliance & Product Safety with Ecological FocusOverview on Clariant’s Textile Product Safety Procedure
Minimum Safety DataCondition: Must exist before placing the product on the market and before offering the product for special and/or sensitive applications.
 Chemical composition & registration status
Flammability data or storage category (internal guideline)
 Physico-chemical data
 Acute oral toxicity
 Acute dermal irritation (time critical)
 Acute eye irritation
 Biodegradation
 Aquatic toxicity
 Bacteria toxicity
 BOD and COD values
Additional Safety InformationCondition: Must exist before placing the product on the market and before offering the product for special and/or sensitive applications.
 Transport classification
Compliance certification with regard toretailer requirements
Compliance certification with regard tofood contact regulations
Compliance certification with regard toconsumer goods regulations
Regulatory Compliance The substances in our finished goods are
permanently checked to comply with the requirements of the chemical control legislations in the EU, United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, Korea, Philippines and China.
Our products are preparations/mixtures of several individual component substances whose properties complement each other in use in order to achieve the desired technical effect. We work to ensure the REACH registration of all the substances contained in our products at the appropriate time, in order that our ability to supply the product in its entirety during the REACH legislation process is not interrupted.
Every manufactured of imported chemical is checked to international lists of chemical weapons and drug precursors, ozone depleting substances, dioxine and PCB precursors, phthalates, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, nonylphenolethoxylates, linear alkyl benzene sulfonates and many more.
Since 40 years all of our raw materials and finished goods are tested to close any data gaps with regard to flammability, acute oral toxicity, skin and eye irritation, bioelimination, biodegradation, aquatic toxicity and bacteria toxicity.
Thus our safety data sheets reflect the highest state-of-the-art of technical progress because they are permanently updated according to the most recent regulations of the European Union.
We are selling a number of special products and we are permanently developing more products, which can be safely used for special applications like the production of packages for food contact articles or the production of hygiene articles, because they comply with the requirements of the corresponding legislative frameworks e.g. BfR recommendations, the German Consumer Goods Ordinance, the French Positive list and the US Code of Federal Regulations (FDA).

International Textile Standards Overview on Clariant’s Textile Product Safety Procedure
Restricted Substance Lists (RSL) Customized environmental standards of
retailer and brands Requiring the absence or limiting the
concentration of certain chemical substances in the product or on the finished textiles
RSL defined and updated by the retailer and brands often linked with the company’s corporate social responsibility programsClariant supports restricted substance lists. Clariant products comply with established standards of major brands and retailers (e.g. Marks & Spencer). Please see our updated compliance list onwww.textiles.clariant.com
bluesign® Standard the bluesign standard covers the complete
range of environmental, health and safety issues throughout the textile production chain
the bluesign standard certifies:• substances that have been rigorously tested
against harmful effects on humans and the environment
• for efficient consumption of relevant resources
Most efficient and safe use of resources, i.e. air, water, health from fiber production to retail, from consumer to the disposal of the garmentClariant supports the bluesign standard and classifies its products in the bluesign’s blue & grey categories.www.bluesign-tech.com
Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) Defines the necessary requirements to ensure
the organic status of textiles • harvesting of the raw materials • environmentally and socially responsible
manufacturing • labeling Standard for organic textiles covers: • production • processing • manufacturing • packaging • labeling • exportation • importation • distribution of all natural fibers
Clariant offers a broad range of dyes and textile chemicals according to the GOTS standard. These products are certified by the independent Institute of Market Ecology (IMO) in Switzerland.www.global-standard.org
Oeko-tex Standard 100 Tests for harmful substances according to the
Oeko-tex standard 100 for textile products Globally uniform testing and certification
system for textiles. (yarn, fibers, fabrics) Scientifically founded evaluation standard for
the human ecological safety of textiles Oeko-tex label informs end users about tested
safety for skin-friendly clothing and other textilesMost Clariant products comply with the requirements of this well-known standard.www.Oeko-tex.com

Holistic Approach to the Entire Textile Value Chain Consumer safety standards (GOTS, Oeko-tex,
etc.) date back to times when consumers perceived they needed to be protected from chemicals on textiles. These standards just limit the amount of certain chemicals that are on the textile.
Intelligent chemistry goes far beyond compliance with consumer standards and allows a new level of sustainability as • new processes save resources, like water and waste water, time and energy, or allow to re-use dyebaths, and
From Chemistry and Consumer Safety to a more Holistic Approach to Sustainability

bluesign® standard
• new textile effects offer consumers a whole variety of unique benefits (like easy stain release or hygienic freshness) and at the same time allow them to actively participate in saving resources while caring for their garments
4E is a holistic approach to care for textiles throughout the entire life-time of the garment• efficient, economically, ecologically and environmentally sound
• takes into account safety for consumers and workers, optimized processes and resources, minimizes the impact on the whole environment
