Resident of the Month
Doreen came to join the Legacy Village family in December of 2018. She moved to Cleveland, Tennes-see after having re-tired in Holiday, Flor-ida.
Doreen was born in Muncie, Indiana, on October 3, 1934 or so she says, “umpteen years ago,” to Dorothy and Bud Bunner, and she is the eldest of three siblings. When she was younger, she really enjoyed playing Bingo, yet liked to stay close to home. As she got older, she enjoyed fish-ing. She became known as “The Queen of the Lake.” The moment a fish was caught she would fry it up and cook it. The neigh-bors would often come over for a fish fry.
She married at the young age of seven-teen to her high school sweetheart, Ed-ward, or “Ed.” Ed was in the Navy and got out shortly after they were married. They had two children, Carolyn and Debbie. She was a stay-at-home mom and she shared that her favorite part of being a mother was that everything went smoothly. She is not only the proud mother of two pre-cious daughters but the grandmother of three and the great-grandmother of eight. What a beautiful legacy. She and Ed were married for 59 years. Yeah, Ed and Do-reen!
She enjoyed traveling, cooking and bak-ing and everything that was associated with homemaking. She had the privilege of working at Price’s Garden Center in Marion, Indiana and was adored by every-one. The people who engaged with her thought she was from the south because of her accent from Muncie. In more re-cent years, she has had the opportunity to visit Hawaii with her daughter, Debbie, on three separate occasions. In Hawaii, the atmosphere and the people are what impressed her the most.
When asked what she would like to share with the world she said, “Be honest in all that you do, whatever it is.” She stated that she likes to live her life one day at a time and doing what is needed in the moment. She also shared that, overall, she has had a pretty good life.
While here in Cleveland, Tennessee, she has thoroughly enjoyed getting to go out with her daughter, Debbie, to differ-ent restaurants around town on Sunday nights. She said, “We have a good time together!”
Doreen is a blessing to Legacy Village. When a smile crosses her lovely face, one’s heart is touched. We are privileged to have Doreen as part of our Legacy Family!
NEWSLETTER | MARCH 2020
Maintaining one’s indepen-dence can become more challenging with age. While seniors frequently associ-ate moving to an assisted
living community with a loss of freedom, the opposite is actually true. Assisted living resi-dents have their own private apartment, with caregivers nearby to provide a helping hand as needed.
Assisted living communities create an individ-ualized care plan for each resident. It acts as a guide for delivering just the right amount of care and support to enable an older adult to remain both safe and independent.
For some seniors, having a helping hand to stay on track with medications can prevent a mistake that results in a trip to the emergency room. Others find they can take advantage of an assisted living community’s transportation services to see the doctor on a regular basis.
A well-balanced diet helps to nourish the body. It is essential for maintaining muscle mass, which is vital for avoiding a debilitating fall. That’s another way assisted living promotes senior independence.
From opportunities to stay active and engaged to well-balanced meals, assisted living also of-fers myriad benefits to older adults:
• Care that changes with needs: While a senior might move to an assisted living community when they are still relatively independent, the community will offer ad-ditional care solutions as an elder’s needs change. This lowers stress associated with
future care and provides peace of mind to older adults and their loved ones.
• Events and activities: From art classes to movie nights, assisted living communities give residents a variety of ways to meet new friends and pursue engaging activities. Both are essential for preventing some of the health conditions associated with iso-lation and loneliness, such as diabetes and depression.
• Maintenance-free living: Seniors who have a house to maintain might continue to tack-le repairs and household chores that may put them at risk for a fall. Tasks as seem-ingly simple as climbing a ladder to change a light bulb become more dangerous as you grow older. In an assisted living community, the burdens of homeownership are left be-hind. Household chores, maintenance, and repairs are taken care of for you.
• Stay-well programs: A quality assisted liv-ing community, such as Legacy Village of Cleveland, places great emphasis on health and wellness. It offers programs designed to help residents live their best quality of life. You’ll find stretching classes, chair yoga, raised beds for gardening, and walking com-petitions.
• Other necessities and conveniences: Leg-acy Village of Cleveland also offers a host of other amenities. For example, on-site beauty and barber shops give residents easy access to haircuts, manicures, and oth-er services. Our anytime dining program al-lows you to eat a fresh cooked meal straight from our kitchen.

It’s March. Winter lingers but we are beginning to feel spring is just around the proverbial corner and with it comes the
expectation of brighter and warmer days.
Along with these days we also witness the birds singing, trees and flowers budding and the grass greening once again. It’s as though our whole world is waking up to a fresh new season. As we witness these changes our spirits soar with the prospect of better days ahead.
March winds bring on memories of the thrill as a child of flying kites in the brisk breezes far above my head. Navigating those winds was somewhat of an art. A learning curve is necessary to master kite flying. Trial and error seemed to be the key to finally seeing it dance in the wind.
Life here at Legacy is best if we are able to get our “kite” flying instead of continuously letting it hit the ground. We need to get it to soar as the eagles.
“Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40: 30,31 NIV
Scripture reminds us that even when we were much younger, we still got tired, we still stumbled and fell. These verses are intended to give us hope for today that by placing our trust in our Lord we can have our stamina renewed. WE WILL WALK, WE WILL RUN, WE WILL SOAR.
There are times I would like to recapture, but thirty-five, fifty, and even sixty-five years of age are undeniably in my rear-view mirror. I can’t go back and capture or change anything. BUT what I can do is seize today.
Let’s put a little pep in our step. Let’s put a smile on our face. Let’s speak a kinder word. Let’s fly our “kite” higher and higher.
