TERIT Initiative:
Telecommunication Research
In Italy
(An Italian approach to the
Future of the Internet)
Promoted by:
ICT Department of CNR & CNIT
Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche5
1) Telecommunications (TLCs) are strategic in the broader area of ICT.
2) TLCs have a strong infrastructure characteristic and are the necessary
condition for the development of any innovative service.
3) TLCs nowadays define a competence space that includes hardware &
software technologies at the network level, objects and relationships at
the service level
4) Italy has all necessary background to maintain and increase TLC
competitiveness, integrating resources from academia, public research
centers, manufacturers, operators, and service providers.
5) TERIT aims at proposing key guide sectors for research and innovation
with an integrated approach of competences
6) The proposed key guide sectors are aligned with the present
international technology innovation trends.
7) Need for a long-term ( 5 years) research plan.
Why TERIT ?
Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche6
TERIT Strategic Objectives
• To design and foster the development a TLC echo-system based
on advanced technologies for the support of innovative services
and applications.
• To strengthen and build new competences, such as ultra high-
speed network architectures, networked applications, and
cooperation of network objects
•To yield social and economic benefits for
The ICT chain of value: manufacturers, network operators and service
providers
The end users: education, turism, health, mobility, public administration,
entertainment, etc
• To shorten the time-to-market of new “commodities”
• To identify the “Future Internet and beyond” challenges as the
unifying paradigm for the innovative technological key sectors to
be addressed in the next decade
Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche7
Looking at the “Future Internet and beyond”Goal : Internet in the daily life of each citizen
The “future networked society” as a collection of entities able to seamless interact
with each other and the surrounding environment.
Open Issues: Enabling Technologies
