At the recent world-wide missionary training meeting broadcast to missionariesthroughout the world, there was a graph projected which revealed that 1 in 3 people are baptizedwho are referred by a member of the Church; knocking doors or tracting yields about 1 in every 1,000persons contacted. No wonder President Gordon B Hinckley has stated that, So many of us look uponmissionary work as simply tracting. Everyone who is familiar with this work knows there is a better way. That way is through the members of the Church. I have observed that in any area of the missionwhere the bishop or branch president has the missionary fire and the members have the missionaryspirit which leads them to actively provide referrals to the missionaries, many are baptized and theward/branch is vibrant, high-energy and deeply faithful. Missionary work is the life blood of this Church!t has always been so and will always be. We recently did a study evaluating the source of baptisms in
the Spain Barcelona Mission in 2015. It revealed the following as sources of our baptisms (finding) thisast year:
1. 36%----Contact by missionary
2. 34%----Active member referral
3. 8%----Recent convert referral
4. 7%----Investigator or contact referral
5. 6%----Investigator contacted missionary
6. 5%----Less active referral
7. 3%----Other means
8. 1%----English Class
Analyzing the results of the study, we can see that the good news is that 55% of the totalbaptisms came from some type of referral (active member, recent convert, investigator, less active)but the bad news is that Contact by missionary was the source of the highest number of baptisms
when one considers the individual single sources and member referrals were only 34%. I am deeplygrateful for the dedication, obedience and hard work that our El Faro missionaries have displayed infinding that many candidates for baptism through their hard work of personal contacting. We havebeen so blessed by the Lord to find so many on the streets and door knocking. But we spend so muchtime contacting with so few who demonstrate an interest. We can handle the rejection, but there is abetter way and that is to get the members involved in helping us.

Preach My Gospel makes many good points about how to go about getting themembers more involved. First, start with the assumption that is isnt going to happen on its own in mostareas---it will require you, as missionaries, to get involved in actually directing the process of exciting themembers. Second, you must believe in this principle and be ready to do your part to change thecurrent system. You need to understand that the process of bringing new people into the Church is notthe responsibility alone of the missionaries (D&C 88:81). Missionaries succeed best when membersbecome the source from which new investigators are found. The ideal situation is when members inviteothers to be taught (do the finding) and missionaries do the teaching. Third, the starting point inbuilding strong relationships with members is the bishop. Offer to help and serve in any righteous waythat he asks. Similarly, be ready to help serve the members and gain their trust. Fourth, look for ways toget to know members better. It might be through service, meal appointments, working in the
ward/branch, inviting them to teach discussions, and personally inviting them to baptismal services.Fifth, many members have fears about doing missionary work. Many are unsure where to begin or whatto say. Teach them how! Every visit to a member by a missionary companionship should have amissionary purpose. If you want to make a strictly social visit, that should be reserved for PreparationDay when you are on your own time. When you go to a dinner appointment, remember that thereshould always be a spiritual thought given, a prayer and, as the Spirit dictates, an invitation to themember to provide a referral; the missionary training conference helped us understand one marvelousway to approach that is by saying, Who do you know that ________ (just had a baby, just moved in,
ust lost a loved one, is looking for a church, has kids the age of yours, etc). Remember no visit shouldast longer than 45-60 minutes! Any time longer than that is wasting time and might be consideredslothful. Sixth, and finally, a member should be invited to participate in all missionary discussions. This
greatly increases the likelihood that the new convert will remain active in the Church after baptism.Every single member of the Church made a covenant with God at the time of their
baptism that they would be willing to be missionaries for the rest of their lives (Mosiah 18:8). We need toremind the members of THEIR responsibility. We all look for the day when the % of new convertbaptisms referred by members is 60%, 70% or even 80%---not 34%. We need to help them understandwe are there to help them with THEIR missionary work. Until that day comes, if not working withmembers to increase our referrals, we will continue finding in the streets and knocking doors. We cant
and wont sit idle when so many of our Heavenly Fathers children need the gospel so desperately
May the Lord bless you as you strive to increase member missionary work in your ward/branch is myhumble prayer.

Honor vs. Disrespect
Message From Hermana Dayton
31 de Enero de 2016El larn de El Faro
onor is respecting others because of their worth as human beings. It is showing consideration tothers and treating them with dignity, courtesy and kindness. It is also respecting others because of
he higher authorities they represent.
ach person has basic human dignity and thus deserves respect. In 1 Peter 2:17 it says, "Honor allmen. Love the brotherhood, Fear God." It is important that as missionaries we not let difference in
ge, gender, race, or opinion keep us from seeing the value of others. We should desire to share theospel with each person we come in contact with.
When we practice good manners we honor others. Opening the door for others, standing whenomeone enters the room, offering your chair to someone who needs it, using good table mannersnd respectful language, and practicing other courtesies is so important.
As my children were growing up, we often discussed how important it was to always do what theyaid they would do. Trust is developed when those around you can depend on your word. If you
make a commitment to get something done, at all costs do it. If you find later that you cannot keepour word it is critical that you go to the person and tell them the situation before the deadline tosure that trust is maintained. Karl G. Maeser, past president of BYU, is known to have said, "I haveeen asked what I mean by "word of honor." I will tell you. Place me behind prison walls---walls ofone ever so high, ever so thick, reaching ever so far into the ground---there is a possibility that in
ome way or another I might be able to escape; but stand me on the floor and draw a chalk lineround me and give my word of honor never to cross it. Can I get out of that circle? No, never! I'd diest."

have had the opportunity to do many professional events. On one occasion, we had invited a very
ell known speaker to give our keynote address. He agreed to be with us and later was asked topeak at a very prestigious conference at the exact time and for a tremendous amount of money. Inew that conference would have helped him professionally and there would be many influentialeople attending. I was very impressed when I found out that he declined the other speakingngagement because he had previously agreed to be at our conference. This man was a man whoonored his word. Those at both conferences had great respect for this man fors integrity.
uthority figures, such as parents, teachers, elected officials, and those called by the Lord to serveave particular responsibilities. We should respect and honor our leaders, even with their flaws and
mperfections. In Hebrews 13:17 it says, "Obey them that have rule over you, and submit yourselves:or they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy and not withrief: for that is unprofitable for you. One of the ways we honor President Dayton is by living missionles with exactness and we honor the Lord by keeping His commandments and serving Him faithfully
We can apply honor to missionary work by:Remembering that everyone you see and talk to are children of GodShowing respect to others by standing tall, making eye contact, addressing them with the correcttitles, and having good mannersHaving the courage to call out a disobedient companionSpeaking positively about bishops, ward members, District Leaders and Zone Leaders, your
companion and all you knowHonoring the commandments and the mission rules by keeping them with exactnessHonoring your word with your investigators, ward members, companion, bishop, and President

This week was full of miracles.Brigitte got baptized! It was
truly a miracle. She was sonervous and almost didn'tcome to the interviewbecause she's so shy and wasnervous to talk to Elder_________. And then onSaturday, everyone was at thebaptism and it was 20 minutesafter it should have startedand her family still wasn't thereso we kneeled as a
companionship and said aprayer and literally 10 secondsafter saying amen they pulledup to the church! The wholeservice went flawlessly and shewas calm and the spirit was sostrong.
We had a great miracle thisweek with the baptism ofDavid. He was very excitedand quite ready for baptism. The only problem was that hisstep mother and father did notbelieve he was ready. Wewere really concerned about itall week wondering if thebaptism would actuallyhappen. On Friday his father,Raul, called us and told us hedidn't believe David was readybut that he would allow him tobe baptized. What I really
wanted to hear was that hedid think he was ready. Iprayed so hard that the Lordwould answer our prayers andthose of Raul. Our prayers wereanswered during the baptismservice I believe. Afterbaptizing David, Raul wasobviously very happy and hethanked us several times forbeing missionaries. David did
the same. I don't know that Iever had a better day on mymission than the one of David'sbaptism.
President! We saw themiracle of BAPTISM!!! Alondra
was finally baptized. I have totestify of member help. Withoutthe members helping us toencourage her throughtestimonies and other support, Idon't think we could havedone it. I love the work here inthis area! It was a very veryvery beautiful thing to seeAlondra join the family ofChrist. I am very excited to
continue the work and helpgrow the kingdom of God onearth.
A miracle I saw this weekwas kind of a personalrevelation, I really enjoyed theworldwide broadcast that wewatched on Wednesday it hitme pretty hard and I actuallywas very happy. I realized not
only how important workingwith members is, but also howimportant it is to talk toeveryone. We should not beafraid to open our mouth andpreach the gospel becausethat's why we are here, itdoesn't matter the person orthe situation everyone has aright to accept or reject thegospel. Also we should be finewith rejection that should not
be why we do not talk topeople, rejection is a sign ofgods love and our willingnessto follow the promptings of thespirit. If we are directed to aneighborhood where we knowwe won't have success butfollow what the spirit tells us todo, and we will see the handof God because we arefollowing his will and doing his
work.

The Miracle of Baptism

So, one of the people(Allison was on fecha when I
left _________) that I taught inmy first rea is gettingbaptized this weekend- Iteared up when I found thatout. I LOVE BEING AMISSIONARY!!!! This week, weworked our tails of, and madeMANY conscious decisins tobe obedient to the missinrules, and I truly know that weare being blessed for doingthat. We had a womanphysically try to drag us intoher piso, and since we didn'thave a third man with us, wedidnt go in. It was hard to say
no- but I know that we havebeen blessed for that! Themiracle from the weekhappened when we werewalking down a street, and
we decided to knock abuilding right before a lesson, and we knocked ONE door, and that is where we foundEsther. She is so prepared tofollow the savior. She couldnt
stop smiling when we gaveher a Book of Mormon andtold her that it was free. Shesaid that she felt the spiritsuper strongly because we
weren't scared to pray inpublic. SHE LOVED PRAYING!!!I love this woman already- theLord truly is all but droppingthe prepared people into ourpath- WE KNOCKED ONEDOOR IN THAT BUILDING!!!!That was a true miracle!!! Ilove this work!!!!
This week was the bestweek I've had in the mission.
The Lord continues to guideElder ______ and me topeople who are ready tohear this gospel and acceptit. we saw tons of miracles thispast week most of whichwere meeting up with olderinvestigators from transferspast and teaching them. IWas really impressed with theway Elder __________ followedthe promptings of the Spirit. Itwas late at night about timeto get on the bus to go home, when all of the sudden heasked me, "Hey Elder ______,do you have the pass by ofthe one lady that lives downthat street." A little disorientedI told him yes, and I checkedmy IPad for her directions. Her
name is Tatiana. The last timewe had passed by sherejected us from coming in,and told us that maybe in thefuture she would visit with us."With enthusiasm Elder _______suggested that we go overthere and pass by. Wepassed by, and she let us in!We talked in front of her doorand she was extremely willing
to listen to us and ourmessage. Over this past weekwe were able to set abaptismal date with her, andshe continues to read andpray.
