• Perimeter Intrusion Detection Systems (PIDS) are systems used in an external environment to detect the presence of an intruder attempting to breach a perimeter.
• Traditional systems include one or multiple: • Barrier-Mounted – Fence Intrusion Detection System
• PIDS deployed on or in conjunction with a fence or other physical barrier (e.g. fiber cable or other motion sensors mounted on a fence).
• Ground-based or Below-ground• PIDS deployed below ground (pressure sensitive cable or electromagnetic field). These do
not require a physical barrier.• Free-Standing
• PIDS deployed above ground that do not need to be installed on or in conjunction with a physical barrier (e.g. bistatic microwave link).
• Rapidly Deployable• PIDS that are designed for temporary deployment; for example, to protect a mobile asset.
Rapidly deployable PIDS are often battery powered and transmit their alarms wirelessly, and are available in each of the above application areas.
• CCTV Verification• Use of cameras to verify detection.
PIDS – what is it?

Types of traditional physical detectors for PIDS
Open area sensors Detects an object crossing (block) IR beam, microwave beam
Challenge .
• Affected by rain, snow, smoke, Ice, bird, dust, object carries by wind, vegetation
• Cost for cabling and device (two sensors must face each other)
• Need frequent maintenance
• Integration with VMS
Fence mounted sensor Detects vibration, change of cable tension
Challenge .
• Affected by object carries by wind, vegetation, bird, thunder.
• Protected area (sensor) is visible. High risk of vandalism.
• High number of sensor required to cover perimeter (cost, installation time and work)
• Tension sensor needs frequent maintenance to keep wire tension
• Integration with VMS
Buried sensor Detects an pressure, vibration, change of electric field.
Challenge .
• Affected by animal, snow, vegetation (reduces vibration)
• Cost and time for cabling under ground
• Integration with VMS (Proprietary API. Old product does not support IP connection)

Video-based detection systems
CCTV detector Detects an object using analytics in thermal camera
Benefits .
• Less false alarms from rain, snow, smoke, Ice, bird, dust, object carries by wind, vegetation
• Immediate verification from video
• Less cost for cabling due to long detection range
• Smart and flexible. More use cases
• Great integration with VMS

Calibration
How?
Tells the application
what humans look like
at different distances
Enables filtering of
animals, vehicles, etc.
Just record video of
person walking in a
zig zag – the rest is
automatic
Can be done on
multiple cameras
simultaneously
Manual mode also
available
Why?
Supported detection scenarios
Intrusion
Triggers on any
motion within the
zone
Zone crossing
Triggers on
movement from
one area into
another
Loitering
Triggers on motion
lasting longer than
a set time
Conditional
As intrusion, but
does not trigger if
entering from ”safe
zone”
