Bottle Packaging
PROJECT OVERVIEW:
For this project we designed a 4-pack of a multi-avor bottled
drink complete with drink carrier. Each bottle was designed to function
as a part of a whole. In other words, each bottle in our package had
to be unique and different from eachother. We were required to have
a theme to base our design around. In fact, we had to think about the
project as a story. We were assigned a topic by which we were required
to use the different parts of the package to tell a story about that topic.
The package design needed to include an interactive element in order
to henance the story being told. Also each bottle had to be a different
avor. This was to help us understand how to use multiple different
elements to support a topic.

SUMMARY:
I really had a hard time with this part of the project. Not just
because it was difcult brain storming ideas but because my hard
drive crashed during the weekend and I didnt back anything up. So
really the biggest ing that I learned from this step of the process was
always back up your work regularly. I cant imagine if I had a clients
work on there and I lost it all. So which that said I have really enjoyed
this project so far. Im really excited to see what what direction this
project takes me. I had a rough start with the brainstorming. But once
I got going it was fun to think about the different things I could do with
aging. I think the direction that Im going to go with is either a 50s
retro style or kind of a 1800s snake oil salesman style. Both with an
emphasis on anti-aging potion. Both I feel have good potential.

SUMMARY:
Is part of true project has by far been the funnest! After some
more sketches I decided that the direction that I want to go is the
snake oil salesman. It has a real old rustic feel that I think will go well
with my theme. And after hearing about the laser engraver the ideas
started ying. I took Brother Randalls advice and went to talk to
Brother Julander about using the laser engraver. It was the coolest
experience ever. I spent the whole day in the lab working on my
project and experimenting with the laser while building pieces for my
box. I went through a lot of trial and error to nally get to the pieces I
have now. And I was very lucky that the wood shop had some spare
wood pieces that I could use for my design. The biggest thing that I
learned from this step of the process was that work should be fun! I
really agree that homework it should be called Homefun.

SUMMARY:
This part of the project was really stressful for me but probably
the most fun. This was the step where I nally constructed my box.
However I learned a crucial lesson during part. That lesson is always
have someone else check your work before you print. Because I
decided to make my bottle carrier out of wood and have it laser
engraved I only had one chance to get it right. The reason for this
is because the wood that I got from the Austin building in the wood
shop was a particular wood that they only had a few pieces of. And
in order to get what I needed I had to have them plane the wood
down to the exact thickness that I needed. So when I mad my box I
had limited supply. They were out of that particular wood and werent
going to be getting any more in soon. But I digress. That wasnt the
issue. The real issue was that because I didnt check the copy before
I engraved my box I had about four minor errors with my copy. Mainly
words switched and putting down a d where a b should have
been. This happens quite often to me and Im beginning to wonder if
Im slightly dyslexic. In the end the moral of the story is always have
someone double check your work before you print.

SUMMARY:
This part of the project was probably the most
exhausting and stressful part of this entire project for two main
reasons. First its the part that Ive nalized all my work and getting all
the little details worked out. Second, and really the biggest reason,
I dropped my project while riding my bike on campus. My box and
everything with it broke apart. I was devastated. I just sat there for a
good minute just holding the remains of three weeks worth of work.
But I sucked it up and went to work. I went and acquired a late night
pass from the college dean and worked in the shop until 1 in the
morning rebuilding my box. Luckily when it broke it broke the glue
not the wood. So I was able to salvage most of the pieces. This was
a huge blessing because I didnt have any more wood to use and I
didnt have enough time to go get more. So there I was rebuilding
my box when I accidentally kick my ash drive while it was plugged
into the computer and destroys it. Normally this wouldnt loose any
sleep over this and just simply buy a new drive. However all the new
changes that I made to my engraving and cut les were saved on that
drive. I had to start over again. Redoing measurements and all. Andto top it all off I lost my power cable to my computer. In the end the
biggest thing that Ive learned through this step is that I know when
the going gets tough I go to work. Despite all the obstacles placed in
my way I was able to push through and nish the job. Of course there
was a lot of prayer involved and repentance for the swearing. But I am
thankful for my strong will that my Heavenly Father has blessed me
with. Without it I think I would have buckled under the stress.

FINAL SUMMARY:
I feel that my logos are an effective design to portray the
cThis project has pushed me in so many ways. I have hit obstacle
after obstacle during this project. Everything from having my hard
drive break to having my project smashed two days before the
deadline. But all in all this has been my favorite project Ive ever done
in school. I love the building part of design. I love making more than
just something on paper. It takes me back to my days of playing with
Legos. When I could build anything I wanted. Thats really why I build
my case out of wood. I wanted to do something that Ive never done
before but I wanted to do something that was going to be fun and
interesting.
Through all the obstacles that Ive faced during this project I
have learned how to adapt and cope with the challenge. Ive denitely
learned a lot about my ability to pick myself up and move on during a
big challenge.
Using the laser engraver was the coolest thing ever. I was
so surprised to discover how easy it was to run. I was able to pick it
up in no time. Plus because of this project I now have a whole new
medium to explore in my design. And despite the easiness to run the
machine it takes a lot of trial and error as well as time spent running
the machine in order to run it well. After this progect I feel very
comfortable running the machine and I really look forward to using it in
future projects.
When I dropped my project and heard it shatter my heart sank.
I just sat there for a second holding the broken pieces of three weeks
work. However I knew that sitting there sulking over my broken box
wasnt going to x anything. So instead I went to work. I got a late
night pass and rebuilt my box that same night. This was just a further
testament to me for my ability to face hard situations and to handle
them pretty well. I was very thankful for this challenge.
