2016 NATA Salary Survey 2
Executive Summary
Key Data Points Only certified athletic trainers were able to participate in the 2016 NATA Salary Survey. Data
was self-reported.
There were 8,717 participants in this year’s survey or approximately 24% of certified members.
In 2014, approximately 21% of certified members participated. We saw an approximately 3%
increase in overall participation (or approximately 1,800 more participants).
The 2016 average annual income is $54,832. This is down approximately .37% from 2014 results.
Job setting details: approximately 38% of participants identified their work place setting as
secondary school, while only 23% of members identify themselves as working in the secondary
school setting.
o Setting specific findings:
Physician practice: ATs who identified as working in the clinical setting were
subsequently asked if they worked as an AT in physician practice (formerly
known as physician extender). Based on these results, ATs who work in the
clinical setting and in physician practice make approximately 15% less than
other ATs in the clinical setting.
Secondary school: ATs who identified as working in the secondary school setting
were subsequently asked if they had teaching responsibilities in addition to their
role as an AT. Secondary school ATs who teach in addition to their AT
responsibilities earn nearly 14% more than those without.
Gender membership statistics were closely in line with participation statistics for the 2016 NATA
Salary Survey. For both participation and membership, slightly more than half of the members
are female. This has implications for our overall salary figures since women make nearly $10,000
(or 17%) less than men do annually.
The age of participants was almost exactly equal to membership statistics. Approximately 60%
of both participants and members are considered Young Professionals (ages 35 and under). This
has potential implications to the profession’s overall average salary since ATs (like most other
professions) earn more with age and experience. YP ATs make approximately 49% less than ATs
over the age of 35.
ATs with supervising responsibilities make approximately 34% more annually than those
without.
