March 22, 2016 Anthony Foxx Secretary of Transportation US Department of Transportation 1200 New Jersey Ave, SE Washington, DC 20590 RE: Support for the City of Des Moines Bridges to Opportunity:
Des Moines’ Community Connection TIGER Grant Application Dear Secretary Foxx: I would like to extend my support to the City of Des Moines’ application for the National Infrastructure Investments/TIGER Discretionary Grant (TIGER Grant). The City’s proposed project, known as the Bridges to Opportunity: Des Moines’ Community Connection is vital to the transportation connectivity and economy of the Greater Des Moines region. For more than a decade, our Riverwalk revitalization has been a critical focus of our community. A unified private/public coalition generated more than $70 million to revitalize the 1.2-mile waterfront pedestrian loop and multi-purpose trail spanning the Des Moines River. This loop unites the east and west sides of downtown and connects over 300 miles of trails in central Iowa. The new plazas, promenades, tree plantings, seating areas, pavilions, artworks, and gardens around the Riverwalk provide improved access to the underutilized riverfront. The Bridges to Opportunity: Des Moines’ Community Connection project will not only enhance the significant private/public investments existing in this area but improve and reinforce the infrastructure critical to the overall revitalization efforts. This project includes replacement and reconstruction of several roadway and multi-use trail bridges in downtown Des Moines. The bridges are an extension of the downtown street network and vital to the past, current and future development of the City and entire metropolitan area. Project benefits include:
Maintain community access to jobs
Restore structural integrity of key river crossings in downtown
Enhance transportation and promote walkability
Maintain prime venue and outdoor event space
Support the growing downtown residential community including low income housing
Improve connectivity to the central Iowa trail system I am pleased to support the City of Des Moines’ TIGER Grant application for the Bridges to Opportunity: Des Moines’ Community Connection. This project is critical to the economic vitality and quality of life for the region. It will continue to help improve the condition of critical infrastructure and augment significant private investment already made along the Des Moines riverfront. Best regards,
Daniel J. Houston President and CEO of Principal®
