Coach Collins brings a wealth of experience as the leader of the 'Rocker football team --- along with some
familiarity of the program and institution --- as he was previously the defensive coordinator for SD Mines in
2002 under former head coach Darren Soucy.
With 16 years collegiate football coaching experience, Collins served at Portland State University before
taking over as head of the Hardrocker football program in 2012, an NCAA Div. I FCS program, where he was
the assistant head coach and special teams coordinator. Prior to that, he spent three seasons with Central
Washington University (NCAA Div. II) as the special teams coordinator and linebacker/defensive line coach.
The Hardrocker head coach's career also included stops at Southern Oregon University in 2007 (defensive
coordinator), Idaho State from 2005-06 (linebackers coach), Western Washington from 2003-04 (linebackers
coach) and Western Oregon from 1998-2002 (special teams coordinator and linebackers coach). In addition,
he spent time in Europe on the coaching staff of the Vienna Vikings (Austria) European League football team
as the defensive coordinator and interim head coach from 1999-2001.
Collins played college football at Western Oregon from 1993-97 as a linebacker, graduating with a degree in
physical education (1998) and then a Master's in education in 2001.
Collins, a native of Sutherlin, Ore., has been married to his wife, Mandi since July 2002. The couple has four
daughters, Kayla (12), Mackenzie (10), and Kylee (4) and Mackenna (2).

Tinker brings a considerable amount of football coaching experience to Rapid City. He joined the
Hardrockers after a very successful stint at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, Ore., where he was the
assistant head coach as well as the offensive and recruiting coordinator (2008-2011). Tinker spent four
seasons with the Eastern Oregon Mounties, a NAIA Div. I institution. While there Tinker also served as the
quarterbacks coach and wide receivers coach.
" I've had the opportunity to work with Coach Tinker at two different universities and I couldn't be more
excited to have him take the reins of our offense," Collins said. "He is a tremendous coach and an even
better person. He is professional and passionate and will be instrumental in helping lead our program into
Division II football."
As an offensive asset to the Hardrockers, Tinker believes the key to football success is being able to make in-
game adjustments, being flexible and to attack personnel match-ups to name a few. He believes an
aggressive game plan will net positive results.
2013 – Hardrockers finished season with 6-4 record marking only the 2nd winning season in the previous 25
years of SDSMT football … Recognized as the most prolific offense in the 109 year history of Hardrocker
Football … Rocker Offense set mark for most points scored in a season (384 / 38.4 ppg) … Set school record
for total yards in a season 4268 (426.8 ypg) …

Verdun Wheeler is one of 17 interns coaching this season on the Division II, Division III or NAIA level. Mines
head coach Stacy Collins said the NFLPA sends out an email advertising the program each spring and this
year was the third time they had applied for the internship.
Verdun Wheeler, who is coaching mike and rover linebackers, said his number one concern as a coach is to
make sure the players are ready for life after their playing days, as well as making sure they are ready for
Saturdays (game day).
He also said he wants to teach schemes that he knows from his time in the NFL and Division I football.
Originally, he said he was a little shy about talking about his playing experience with the team, but he has
been encouraged by Collins to do so. He finished with 164 tackles in his four years with the Bulldogs (2003-
2206) in the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
After stops in training camps for the Chicago Bears and Washington Redskins, Verdun Wheeler turned to
high school coaching for four years in the Atlanta area.
