DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD
This is the Alumni Association’s most prestigious award. Recipients must be Texas State graduates who have excelled in their chosen business, profession or life work on a national or international level. The first Distinguished Alumni Award was presented in 1959 to then Senator Lyndon B. Johnson, who later served as 36th President of the United States of America.
LBJ OUTSTANDING
SENIOR STUDENT AWARD
Recipients of this award must be candidates for graduation in May of the year the award is given or have graduated the August or December before. The award is given to those who have shown excellence in leadership, character, campus and community involve- ment, and academic success. The 2014 LBJ Outstanding Senior Student was presented to Vanessa Cortez ‘14.
TEACHING AWARD OF HONOR
This award was designed to recognize, encourage and reward superior Texas State University classroom teachers. Texas State professors, lecturers, associate professors, assistant professors and instructors are eligible. In fall of 2014, the Alumni Association presented this award to Dr. Steven Furney, professor of Health and Human Performance, at University Convocation.
The Alumni Association sponsors several significant awards
for distinguished alumni, faculty and students. A complete list of awards, criteria and
former recipients can be found on our website at www.alumni.txstate.edu.

GOLD BOOK
The Gold Book is a Texas State pride and traditions book sponsored by the Alumni Association. In the program’s fourth year, the Alumni Association was able to give more than 6,000 books to incoming freshmen and transfer students. In 2014, more than 40 Gold Book participants were gifted Texas State class rings for their participation in the program.
RING CEREMONY
The Ring Ceremony is sponsored by the Alumni Association twice a year (during each long semester). Bobcats with 75 hours or more are eligible for a ring. This event is the first opportunity for students to receive their rings and dip them in a fountain from which San Marcos River water flows. In 2014, more than 1,200 participants received their rings in front of 5,000 family members and friends.
TRADE UP
Trade Up is a well-known campus event in which the Alumni Association provides a brand-new Texas State T-shirt to students who “trade up” their old T-shirts from other campuses. Each year, the Alumni Association gives away more than 7,500 T-shirts.
UNIVERSITY AMBASSADORS
The Alumni Association co-sponsors the University Ambassadors, a group of student leaders who provide outreach to current students and enhance relationships between students and alumni by promoting University traditions and instilling University pride. They also welcome visitors and prospective students to campus by providing campus tours and working at special events.
The Alumni Association believes creating affinity with students while they are here at
Texas State helps engage them as alumni after graduation and helps us build the pipeline
of future alumni leaders.
