Historical SeasonThe 2012-13 Express volleyball team produced, arguably, the best season in program history. They finished 37-11 overall and captured the program’s 13th OCCAC championship. They captured the OCCAC with a perfect 12-0 record, which was the eighth time in program his-tory that has happened. Despite all that, it’s what the team did in the postseason that mattered most.
At the NJCAA D-II level, no prior team has finished better at the national tourna-ment than the fourth place finish last year’s team accomplished. From 1998-2000, three straight teams finished third
at the national tournament, although that was at the NJCAA D-III level.
Alyssa Meis and Dakia SellersThis duo will go down as the one of the best 1-2 offensive combination in pro-gram history, if not the best.
The outside hitting duo combined for 1,231 kills, 695 digs and 233 blocks.
Both players broke the previous single season kills record held by Stephanie Champine (595), with Sellers ultimately achieving the highest mark with 618. She also added 158 blocks, 122 digs, eight aces and eight assists.
Following the season, Sellers was named First Team All-OCCAC, First Team All-Region XII and NJCAA D-II First Team All-American. She also made the
all-tournament teams at the regional and national levels. Her first team honors na-tionally marked the first time a freshman (sixth overall) has acheived that honor in Express volleyball history.
At nationals, Sellers recorded 67 kills in four matches to help the Express finish fourth. In the national quarterfinal, she recorded a season-high 27 kills to help the Express defeat Iowa Central Commu-nity College in five sets.
Meis, meanwhile, became the first player
in program history to record 500 kills and 500 digs in the same year. She fin-ished her sophomore campaign with 613 kills, 573 digs, 75 blocks and 43 aces.
In four NJCAA D-II National Tourna-ment matches, she had 53 kills, 60 digs, seven assisted blocks, three solo blocks and one ace.
Meis ended her two-year career with 776 kills, 646 digs, 124 blocks, 49 aces and 13 assists. She ended her career with the sixth most career kills.

Molly HilfingerAside from Meis, another sophomore who closed out a record setting two-year career was the team’s setter, Molly Hil-finger. She broke the single match, single season and career assist records last year. On Oct. 24, her 64 assists against Sinclair broke the single match record, and she became only the third player in program history to record 2,000 career assists on Oct. 26. Overall, she finished with 1,518 assists as a sophomore. Her sophomore assist total was third most in the nation.
Following the regular season, Hilfinger was named First Team All-OCCAC and First Team All-Region XII. Hilfinger, who also was named to the Region XII District E all-tournament team, had 17 kills, 412 assists, nine aces, 59 digs, four solo blocks and 12 assisted blocks in OC-CAC play.
Other sophomore stats for Hilfinger included 70 kills, 52 aces, 367 digs, 53 blocks. For her career, she had 2,346 assists, 81 kills, 97 aces, 648 digs and 54 blocks.
In the national tournament, Hilfinger re-
corded 169 assists, 52 digs, nine kills and seven assisted blocks over four matches.
Lisa UrbanskiAside from Sellers, another freshman who burst onto the scene was the team’s primary defensive specialist/libero, Lisa Urbanski.
The Toledo-area product nearly broke the single season digs record as she fin-ished with 953 - 54 short of breaking the record.
Urbanski finished the national tourna-ment with 107 digs. She was named First
Team All-OCCAC and was a one-time OCCAC player of the week.
All-OCCACMeis, Sellers, Hilfinger and Urbanski were named First Team All-OCCAC following the season, while Jazmine Thomas earned Honorable Mention All-OCCAC honors.

was named Region XII District E tour-nament MVP. Sellers and Hilfinger also made the all-tournament team.
Moving OnHilfinger signed with NCAA D-II Ursu-line College following the season.
Academic ExcellenceFour student-athletes (Hilfinger, 3.74 GPA; Meis, 3.32 GPA; Urbanski, 4.0 GPA and Dominique Yates, 3.51 GPA) earned their way onto the OCCAC All-
Academic team, while Hilfinger earned NJCAA Exemplary Academic Achieve-ment honors. As a team, the Express earned a 3.19 GPA and were awarded NJCAA Academ-ic Team honors.
The Man In ChargeHead coach Sonny Lewis racked up an-other outstanding season last year.
Now in his 13th season with the Express, Lewis has coached the team to 11 OC-
CAC championships in 12 years. In seven of those seasons, the team had a perfect OCCAC record.
In the postseason, Lewis has coached the team to three NJCAA D-II National Tournament appearances, including two of the past three seasons. In 2003, the team finished fifth, while the 2010 team finished as a qualifier. Last year’s team, of course, finished fourth. Overall, Lewis is 448-145 - an average of just over 37 wins per year. In OCCAC
play, his record is an astonishing 130-8 - win percentage of .942.
600 On Sept. 7 of last season, the Express defeated Edison in straight sets. In doing so, the program captured its 600th win. Since 1994, the team has an overall record of 625-254 (.711 winning percent-age). In OCCAC play, the Express are 196-37 (.841 winning percentage).

Head Coach - 13th SeasonSonny Lewis
Sonny Lewis is his 13th season as head coach of the Express women’s volleyball team.
In 2012, the Express went 37-11 overall. They cap-tured the program’s 13th OCCAC championship with a perfect 12-0 record, the Region XII District E championship and advanced to the NJCAA D-II Na-tional Tournament, where they finished fourth in the nation. It was the best finish in program history at the NJCAA D-II level.
This came following a 45-5 season in 2011, where the Express won the OCCAC title with a perfect confer-ence record and finished as the Region XII District E runner-up to Oakland Community College, who went on to finish as the national runner-up. The team set program records for fewest losses and best winning
percentage (.900), and their win to-tal was one short of the 46 win single season record set by the 2000 and 2002 teams.
With the team’s victory over No. 20 Carl Sandburg College in 2011, Lewis earned his 400th victory at Owens. In the past three years alone, Lewis has guided the Express to a 124-25 record overall and a 35-1 record in OCCAC play.
During his first 12 seasons, Lewis has compiled a 448-145 record, including a 142-8 record in the OCCAC that has led to 11 OCCAC cham-pionships.
Lewis has been named OCCAC Coach of the Year 10 times and his teams have made three trips to the nation-al tournament, in-cluding two of the past three years.
While at Owens, he has coached two NJCAA Div. II First Team Athletic All-American (Dakia Sell-ers, 2012 and Ashley Hill, 2004), five NJCAA Div. II Second Team Athletic All-Americans, and three NJCAA Div. II Honorable Mention Athlet-ic All-Americans.
He has also coached a two-time All-American twice (Brittany Egbert, 2010-11 and Stephanie
Champine, 2006-07). Additionally, Lewis has coached 14 NJCAA Div. II Academic All-Ameri-
cans entering the 2013 season.
Prior to assuming the head coaching duties at Owens, Lewis served as the head coach at Springfield High School. In 22 seasons, he won 373 matches and seven Northern Lakes League, 15 sectional, six district and two regional championships. Two of his Blue Devil teams played in the state semifinals.
Lewis is a member of the Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Hall of Fame and Springfield Hall of Fame. Residing in Toledo, Lewis
earned his bachelor’s degree in comprehensive social studies
from Defiance College in 1970.
