Colorado Department of Transportation’s 2012 City and County Map Series

This poster showcases the Colorado Department of Transportation’s (CDOT) updated City and County MapSeries. CDOT provides these maps online to the public and uses them as part of the annual Highway User TaxFund reporting cycle. While CDOT continually maintains high quality transportation data, the overallcartographic display of data was outdated, which made the maps hard to use. In addition, CDOT faced achallenge in striking a balance between creating high quality maps for 332 unique jurisdictions across thestate and being able to efficiently produce these maps in a similar format, respecting a variety of map scalesand page sizes. By combining new mapping technologies and cartographic tools, this project was able toachieve this balance. CDOT is positive that these maps will better serve the public and local jurisdictions bybeing more effective, efficient, and elegant.

The mapping process used MapLogicLayout Manager (V.4.1) in tandem withthe Data Driven Pages functionality inArcMap to apply standardizedsymbologies across multiple maps ‐‐each with different data extents andpage sizes. These two tools togetherallow for quick map production for awide range of conditions.
