1. It’s a Firkin Riot! Johnny Brenda’s, June 2. Check out the rack on that bar: It’s holding casks of your favorite English-style ales.
2. Kingpin, Standard Tap, June 2. Help your favorite brewery kick its pin (small cask) fi rst.
3. Meet the Stella Artois Draftmaster, SugarHouse Casino, June 4. Learn to pour a perfect pint of the Belgian lager from the expert, and take home a pint.
4. Oscar Blues Cans, Delilah’s Gentleman’s Club & Steakhouse, June 8. Yes, the “world’s most beautiful showgirls” will show you their cans, including the appropriately labeled Deviant Dale’s IPA.
5. Fishtown FestivALE, Johnny Brenda’s/Frankford Hall, June 9. A street fest with old-style Germans and newfangled Americans.
5 Events You Can’t Miss inNorthern Liberties & Fishtown
Venn diagram labeled Dank Brews and Cabaret License
would show an intersection of a few select spots. Since a sloshing glass will win you few fans, best to quaff drafts in between dance-fl oor sessions.
1. Silk City (Northern Liberties). Nightly DJ parties and eye candy clientele keep Mark Bee’s nightspot-cum-diner popping around the clock. Retire to the psychedelic beer garden when you need a break from the beats.
2. Pub on Passyunk East (South Philly) It’s all about Wednesday night, when the tattooed royalty of South Philly come out to get down to DJs RockTits and special guests, who rotate as frequently as the POPE’s drafts.
3. Johnny’s Brenda’s (Fishtown) Local and touring bands rock out at JB’s upstairs venue (complete with two bars and photobooth), while DJs spin alongside bartenders pouring all regional brews.
4. Rebel Rock Bar & Bites(Northern Liberties). Rock ‘n’ roll in a lounge, with a primo bottle selection and tableside taps.
5. Tavern on Camac (Center City East). The longtime LGBT club features nightly live music and an upgraded tap list.

#1 Prague beer in the world
The spirit of Prague
hough some may subscribe to a catch-and-release policy, most
beer geeks prefer to travel in pairs. Impress a potential mate with your fl awless taste, or treat the old fl ame to a night on a town at date spots with built-in eff ervescence.
1. Varga Bar (Center City). Suggestive studies of ‘40s-era pinups fresco the ceiling at this tiny tappie, where close quarters transform friendly acquaintances into much better friends.
2. With Love Beer Garden at Four Seasons Hotel (Center City). The setting is swank, there’s a breeze through the garden courtyard, and if things go really well, you’re already (nudge, nudge) at the Four Seasons.
3. Kennett (South Philly). The vibes have been building in Kennett’s cozy room since 1924, when it fi rst opened as Kennett Café. These days, an orange glow from the wood-burning pizza oven fl ickers over couples taking in locally sourced small plates.
4. Bar Ferdinand (Northern Liberties). You don’t need an art-history degree to interpret the real roses and mosaic bulls adorning Owen Kamihira’s Spanish-speaking dream, just a pulse and enough scratch for tapas for two.
5. Tria Fermentation School (Center City) It’s pure class to fl ex your brain cells sans pretension on date night, especially when the education comes in the form of expert-led tastings of beer and cheese.

GET YOUR FILL OF HOPS. THEN GO HOPS ON SEPTA FOR THE RIDE HOME.
Enjoy Beer Week, then enjoy an easy ride home. SEPTA is your ticket to a safe trip. Check out real stories from real people at ISEPTAPHILLY.COM
ne of the great joys of pub life is people-watching. Outdoor cafes
off er a soothing blur of humanity, punctuated by beautiful faces and remarkable sartorial decisions; indoor scenes are when things really get interesting. Given Philadelphia’s passion for craft beer, you’ll never have to drink a lousy macro in any of our favorite places to watch the world go by. 1. a. Kitchen (Center City). A curated selection of craft beer from around the world complements chef Bryan Sikora’s obsessively seasonal approach at this sleek showcase restaurant. Score a table along 18th Street to scope the latest in Rittenhouse fashion.
2. Molly Malloy’s (Center City). This ramshackle Reading Terminal beer garden has 24 taps, a full menu and a new look to accommodate swelling crowds. Reward a successful grocery run with a glass and take in the parade.
3. Whole Foods (Plymouth Meeting, Monto). Hot yoga moms, free parking, hundreds of bottles and growler fi lls all in one magical location are what make the suburbs great.
4. Delilah’s Gentlemen’s Club & Steakhouse (Fairmount/Spring Garden). Take your eyes off the stage just long enough to choose a craft beer when visiting this gentleman’s club. Perhaps you’d like to buy a particularly enchanting dancer a draft?
5. Jon’s Bar & Grill (South Street). People-watching can be a full-contact sport on South Street. Revive with a beer without sacrifi cing the view of the wildlife from this old-school spot’s streetside patio.

he mother of modern beer cocktails is a Dirty Hoe. This glass of draft Hoegaarden splashed with fuschia Lindeman’s Framboise lambic may
seem like a fi nger in the face of the brewers who spent so much time crafting their recipes to perfection, but fact is, humans like nothing better than to meddle with perfection. A few daring Philly publicans blend brews into original cocktails that both pay homage to, and saucily wink at, their brewer sires.
1. Smokin’ Betty’s (Center City) Allagash White is juiced up with peach schnapps and a slice of gingery fruit in the Curious Georgia, a refreshing take on the witbier-wit-more category launched by the Dirty Hoe.
2. London Grill (Fairmount) Owner Terry McNally’s irreverence and laser-like palate has produced gems of this nascent genre of drink. Tops is the Smoke ‘Em if You Got ‘Em, a mashup of Victory Prima Pils, smoky mezcal and chipotle-infused vodka—a woodsy sip with a salty edge.
3. Alla Spina (Spring Garden) Vetri Family beverage director Steve Wildy delivered an entire selection of beer-based cocktails for this new North Broad gastropub. The Shillaci (named for Sicilian footballer Totò) spins Averna amaro, Stumptown coff ee and Stoudt’s Fat Dog oatmeal stout into a tipple with serious kick.
4. The Farmers’ Cabinet (Center City) There’s not a drop of beer in the beer-inspired cocktails at this dim and sexy destination, but just a sip of the Cockaigne will drive lambic fi ends wild. A complex character is derived from a blend of cognac, orange bitters, sugar, sparkling wine and strawberry shrub, a historic refresher made from smashed fruit and cider vinegar. The eff ect is so convincing, you won’t even miss the Cantillon.
5. Cantina Felize (Fort Washington, Montco) Order up a plate of do-it-yourself tacos, but skip the Bloody Mary. Instead, order the real national drink of Mexico, a Michelada, made with Dos Equis Amber, lime juice, tomato and hot spices.
Steve Wildy of Alla Spina shares this classic recipe.
• 3.5 oz. Monk’s Café Flemish Sour Ale
• 2.5 oz. Chinotto soda
• 0.25 oz. crème de violette
• Combine all three ingredients with ice in a shaker, and shake lightly to create a
moussey texture. Strain into a coupe or martini glass and imbibe. The grown-up bitterness of Chinotto Italian soda informs Monk’s Café Sour Ale with a bit of bite in the Red Velvet; a dram of crème de violette adds a fl oral fi nish.

Where To Go...
hen it comes to literature, booze has bolstered more brilliance
than any single infl uence other than being Irish. So, where better to appreciate the works of Bukowski, Hunter S. Thompson and the city’s own David Goodis than in the soothing buzz of a public house, with an equally intriguing glass at hand?
1. Hawthorne’s (Bella Vista). Browse the coolers for a bottle to sit with on the sofa, or work on your tan with a table in the sun at lunchtime.
2. Fergie’s (Center City East). Something about the light coming through bottle-bottom windows makes it great for reading. Brainy bartenders, too.
3. Foodery (Northern Liberties). Mind-bending bottle selection, handmade sandwiches and café tables with no server to pester you.
4. Beneluxx (Old City). Get lost in this snug underground cavern stocked with fi ne beer, cheese and chocolate.
5. The Bards (Rittenhouse). The visages of dead Irish writers adorn the walls of this uptown classic, where the brogues of the bartenders are as authentic as the fi sh and chips.

ub crawls have a lousy reputation for promoting boorish behavior, sloppy make-out sessions and barfi ng in otherwise respectable establishments.
To keep the tone festive rather than fetid, pros know to limit the destinations to a manageable number—and keep the water and food coming. Try one of these unique crawls:

hese days, a great tap list is the norm at Philly bars. Still, you
might be surprised at the draft lineup at these places.
1. Kildare’s (Manayunk). An Irish chain bar on party-time Main Street with spigots pouring Boulder, Dogfi sh Head, Corsendonk, Weihenstephaner and Sly Fox. On the fi rst Friday of the month, there’s a fresh fi rkin on the bar.
2. Fox & Hound (Center City). Your prototypical sports bar … with a beer book that includes Chimay, Lagunitas and lots of locals.
3. Uno Chicago Grill. The old Pizzeria Uno is now a deep-dish destination with two dozen-plus taps, including its own house beer, Big Ern IPA from Weyerbacher.
4. Wrap Shack (Center City). From the outside, it looks like a sandwich shop for offi ce workers. They’re smiling after lunch, thanks to glasses of Victory, Long Trail, Fegley’s Brew Works and more.
5. Tomato Bistro (Manayunk). You’ve known it as a takeout pizza joint for the last 10 years, but now the second fl oor features a tidy tap lineup.

pen a new concept without a serious craft-beer bill? It simply
isn’t done in this town. From an Italian gastropub way, way uptown to a sprawling hall in the stadium complex, good beer forms the backbone of the bar for this year’s crop of newsiest new guys.
1. Interstate Tap House (Fishtown). The owners have transformed a former neighborhood problem bar into a draft beer oasis, complete with an outdoor dining garden.
2. American Sardine Bar (South Philly). Will John Longacre’s transformation of the derelict Wander Inn develop into a neighborhood landmark the way his South Philly Tap Room has in Newbold? The sandwiches and smart service bode well.
3. Victory Beer Hall (South Philly). The award-winning Downingtown brewer pours its own drafts and a rotating cast of crafts at this spankin’ new space in Xfi nity Live! at the sports complex, plying fans with beer worth drinking.
4. Barcade (Fishtown). A spin-off of the Brooklyn original, Barcade sports an array of vintage video games and a furiously rotating beer list with a national, rather than local, focus.
5. Alla Spina (North Philly). Sommelier Steve Wildy is procuring funky Italian craft beers for chef/owner Marc Vetri’s Italian gastropub concept, luring fans with a nose for mortadella hot dogs and doughnut bread pudding to the site of a former car dealership on North Broad Street.
Rookies of the Year
ne of the unexpected benefi ts of the smoking ban was to open
up formerly hazardous restau-bars to a wider range of guests, boosting food sales and exposing even more folks to the beauty of craft beer. Pack up the kids and stick Grandma in the car; we’re going out for dinner.
1. Iron Hill (multiple locations). A wide-ranging menu (complete with gluten-free options) and a long line of house-brewed taps make the whole household happy. Bonus points for roomy booths and beer-educated staff .
2. Uno Chicago Grill (multiple locations). With draft lists deeper than the dish of their decadent pizzas, this chain’s approach to beer should be emulated nationwide.
3. Crosswalk Cafe (Old City). After a day of trooping the kids to the Betsy Ross House, the Liberty Bell and the Constitution Center, take a load off in this outdoor café smack in the middle of Independence Mall.
4. Bullies Pub (South Philly). For the Flyers fan in all of us, this memorabilia-packed restaurant at Xfi nity Live! is the perfect stop before or after the big game.
5. Via Marconi Pizza Pub (Lansdale, Montco). Kids + pizza + parents + beer = brilliant.
1. Menno Olivier, Brouwerij De Molen, Monk’s Café (Center City), June 4. Known for big, dark beer, Olivier’s bringing a keg of smoked imperial porter he brewed with Tom Peters of Monk’s.
2. Bob Cannon, Sam Adams, City Tap House (West Philly), June 5. Yep, the bald dude with the beard you see in all those Boston beer commercials.
3. Shaun Hill, Hill Farmstead, Teresa’s Next Door (Wayne, Delco), June 9. The cult fave from Vermont is bringing Abner, Edward and his other pals.
4. Brian Strumke, Stillwater Artisanal Ales, Devil’s Den (South Philly), June 6. Highly accomplished and responsible for one of the greatest Philly beer names ever, an oatmeal beer created with a Dutch brewer: Holland Oats.
5. Iacopo Lenci, Ask this young, self-styled “rock star” brewer from Italy’s Birrifi cio Brùton how he comes up with his wild, hugely fl avored beers. (Appearance dates unconfi rmed at press time.)

ive years ago, the whole notion of a “beer week” was as unknown
as a black IPA. There simply was no such thing.
Today, if you plug the term into Google, you’ll get more than 2.4 million results. There’s an entire entry on the subject in the new Oxford Companion to Beer. San Francisco beer writer Jay Brooks, who wrote that entry, has compiled an online list of nearly 100 beer weeks worldwide, from Alabama to Yakima, Wash. They now celebrate beer week in Tokyo, Toronto and Washington, D.C.
It all began in Philadelphia . . .
As the city celebrates its fifth annual beer week, our keepsake guide offers a broad overview of not just the week’s events, but the entire beer scene—from places to take a date, to places you can survive with your kids, on beer crawls, in the outdoors, from South Philly to North Wales.
In the spirit of the occasion, we limited our advice to lists of five. But that’s just a starting point, for if Philly Beer Week proves one thing, it’s that there is no end to the variety and scope of this region’s beer culture.
Still need inspiration? Here’s my personal list of Top 5 Things to Do During Philly Beer Week:
Get my photo with the Hammer of Glory.
Have a beer I’ve never tasted at a bar I’ve never visited before.
Enjoy a homebrew.
Share a pint with Mayor Nutter.
Raise a glass in memory of beer writer Michael Jackson and Philly Beer Week co-founder Bruce Nichols. We owe them a big debt.
Speaking of which, Philly Beer Week is the product of hard work from many, many people.
Here’S a feW WHo PiTcHeD in: Sparks (our web guy), Jennie Hatton & the staff of Profile PR, the staff of Philadelphia Weekly, Ed Kirk, Steven George, Clayre Cardi, Theresa Conroy, Sheila Ballen, Anna Bauer, Jess McGarvey, Farra D’Orazio & the staff of Four Seasons, Alethia Calbeck & the staff of the Greater Philadelphia Tourism & Marketing Corp., the staff of Xomo Digital, Peter Heacock, Woody Pase, SEPTA (take public trans!), Chris LaPierre, Carolyn Smalgalski & Philly Beer Geek, Wendy Littlefield & Don Feinberg, Shawn Gormley, Andy Farrell, Roshni Patel & the staff of Independence Visitor Center, Herb Rife, Felicia D’Ambrosio, Mike Strauss, Christine Piven & the office of Mayor Nutter, Andy Calimano and Matt Satten.
None of this would happen without the incredible blood, sweat and tears from the region’s brewers, wholesalers, bar owners, waitstaffs (tip your bartender!) and your friendly beer delivery person.
And, finally, the Philly Beer Week board of directors. We meet at 10:30 a.m. on the second Tuesday of every month at Yards Brewing. Our meetings are open to the public – you’re invited to attend and share your great ideas for 2013!

ive of Belgium’s six commercially brewing Trappist monasteries
have made their beer available to the Philadelphia market, so there’s no excuse for remaining ignorant of this classic canon. Pro tip: Don’t pester your bartender for Westvleteren; if there’s any hidden in the basement, it’s under lock and key.
1. Monk’s Café (Center City). It’s one of only four bars in America to be labeled an offi cial 2012 Ambassadeur Orval, so you can be assured the only dry-hopped Trappist will be perfectly poured.
2. Eulogy (Old City). Will it be a 6, 8, or 10? Order with gravity, then compare the relative merits of Rochefort’s three benchmark beers in the comfortable confi nes of this Old City staple.
3. The Belgian Café (Fairmount). Brouwerij der Sint-Benedictusabdij de Achelse Kluis is a bit of a mouthful, especially when a glass deep on what we’ll call Achel Extra: a delicious big-bottle staple at the Belgian Café.
4. Bridgid’s (Fairmount). Chimay of Scourmont Abbey is the grand dame of the Trappist world, just as Bridgid’s is the original queen of Philly’s Belgian beer scene.
5. Theresa’s Next Door (Delaware County). Does bottle-fermented beer taste diff erent out of a 11.2- vs. 25.4-oz. bottle? Theresa’s lets you choose your own adventure with Westmalle dubbel and tripel in multiple formats; pair with moules frites for an immersive Belgian café experience.
