Dear Parent Volunteers,
It is through the hard work and dedication of Parent Giving Volunteers that our programs and results are the envy of our peer schools. Over the past three years, parent participation has averaged 76% across the board, and the Academy has received an average of $1.5 million for the Annual Fund, and an additional $1.9 million in capital gifts towards the Senior Class Campaigns. These are eye-popping numbers, and are a direct result of the hard work, dedication, and generosity of our parent volunteers. Thank you for offering to serve in the upcoming year, and for helping to keep our great track record humming along. I want you to know that your efforts are greatly appreciated by the Board, the faculty and administration, and all Deerfield alumni.
We have ambitious goals again this year. For the Annual Fund, we are targeting parent participation of 90%, with a dollar goal of $1.5 million. For the Senior Class Campaign, we will help complete funding for the Memorial Building/Center for the Arts renovation and expansion, and are also targeting participation of 90% of the families of the Class of 2013. These are big numbers, but I am confident that we can reach and surpass this level of contribution.

The Annual Fund
IMMEDIATELY FUNDS IMAGINE DEERFIELD PRIORITIES
This year the Annual Fund remains focused on Deerfield’s core priorities: Renewing and Expanding our Faculty and Strengthening Academic Support. It will give Department Chairs time to meet and plan innovative pedagogy, send faculty abroad and influence their courses, and bring as diverse and interesting a group of students to campus as possible. A pilot iPad program enhancing access to interactive multimedia in the classroom is a good example of how these initiatives are enhancing the Deerfield experience.

The Campaign to Honor the Class of 2013
Deerfield Academy and the Senior Parents Committee invite the families of the Class of 2013 to join together to support the funding for a new Center for the Arts in the Memorial Building. The core elements of the project include the complete renovation and expansion of the Large Auditorium and Lobby, the construction of a 1,210 square-foot Art Gallery on the west side of the building, and a new 160-seat Concert Hall on the east side. In combination with the newly refurbished Greer Store and Dining Hall, this project represents the completion of a seven-year program to upgrade the Academy’s core community spaces.
While critical thinking skills allow us to under-stand the complex world around us, our creative skills enable us to respond to it. In creating a new Center for the Arts, Deerfield will create a community space to inspire, delight, heal, inform, and surprise. The comprehensive renovation and expansion of the Memorial Building will position Deerfield as a leader in the development of artistic excellence while revitalizing a beloved Academy landmark.
For 60 years the Memorial Building has embodied Deerfield’s warmth and tradition. Originally known as the Alumni Memorial Building, Deerfield’s arts building was inaugurated in 1952 in honor of the 61 Deerfield alumni who lost their lives in World War II. It is in the Mem that new students stand to introduce themselves to each other, the community gathers for school meetings and performances, and our seniors gather the night before Commencement for the Senior Cry.
Thanks to an anonymous $4 million matching grant, the families of the Class of 2013 have an opportunity to leverage their philanthropy and complete the funding of a facility that will impact every student at Deerfield for decades to come. We thank you for your support.

Faculty need time to deepen their knowledge, learn new technology, and think about new ways of teaching. We’ll invest in additional faculty to ensure that meaningful relationships with students continue to define the Deerfield experience, even as faculty engage these new challenges in the classroom, on the field, and on the corridor.
A new Academic Center will create opportunities for students through more personalized programs and resources, to help ensure that all of our students thrive—not only at Deerfield, but in college and beyond.
The best teaching comes through a relentless pursuit of excellence. We’ll help our teachers identify new opportunities in their lessons—new tools, techniques, and pedagogies—by delivering more data, more feedback, and more structures for collaboration. The result will be a faculty—teachers, coaches, and mentors—that is collaborative and reflective about its practices and intentional about its professional growth.

In the last year, 50 faculty members have travelled abroad for professional development purposes to countries such as China, Costa Rica, Africa, India, and Brazil.
Seven FTEs (full time equivalent positions) have been added to the faculty since the approval of the strategic plan, including one additional FTE in math, science, and Spanish, and a Director of Multicultural Affairs, a Sustainability Coordinator, a Global Studies Director, and an Assistant Study Skills Coordinator.
The proposed Academic Center will feature test preparation programs, individualized guidance, enhanced academic counseling, a writing specialist, and diagnostic tools to evaluate student progress. Inspiring young people to discover their best selves is at the heart of Deerfield’s mission. A new Academic Center will help us achieve this noble and far-reaching task.

With over 525 alumni volunteers and 60 parent volunteers working on Deerfield’s behalf, the shared effort of so many loyal and talented people leads to success year after year. Your hard work, organization, and persistence will directly affect the results for your class, and ultimately for Deerfield. Thank you for joining the team!

How Do I Get Other Parents to Support Deerfield?While there is no single “best” way to secure gifts for Deerfield, certain things do tend to lead to more success.
1. Give. Make your own gift or pledge before you begin your calls.
This makes it possible for you to invite every parent to join you
in supporting Deerfield this year.
2. Prepare. Know who you plan to call and what you would like
them to give. Familiarize yourself with current information about
Deerfield so that you feel confident talking about the school of today.
3. Ask. Most people simply do not give until they are asked.
4. Thank. Thank parents for the conversation no
matter how long or short, and pass on relevant information
to Parent Giving staff. The personal touch is by far the best
use of your time.
Your organization, determination, and follow-through will directly affect
the results for your class. Thank you for “making the ask” for Deerfield.
We simply could not sustain our excellence without you.

Gifts and pledges can be made in a myriad of ways:
1. Credit Card
a. Online at deerfield.edu/give. In addition to one-time gifts or pledges, recurring giving can be established here. Gifts can be made monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually for up to five years. Deerfield accepts American Express, MasterCard, and Visa. No log-in is necessary.
b. Phone: Donors may call 413-774-1474 during regular business hours to make a gift.
c. Mail: Donors can mail credit card gifts to:

Remember to include:
• the card type (Amex/MasterCard/Visa), account number, and expiration date;
• the amount of the donation; and

Please notify our office of all potential stock transfers, including the name of the security and the number of shares. Unidentified transfers can delay official acknowledgement of the gift.

4. Matching Gifts
Corporate Matching Gifts contribute more than $200,000 per year to Deerfield. Individuals receive donor recognition for their initial gift PLUS the amount of their matching gift.
• Encourage parents to seek a match through their companies or through their spouses’ companies.
• The donor must initiate the matching gift through his/her own company, usually online or with their Human Resources office.
• A listing of companies who will match gifts to Deerfield is available on Deerfield’s online giving page or: matchinggift.com/Deerfield.
5. Planned Giving
Planned giving programs benefit Deerfield, while offering tax advantages and/or income to the donor. They are characterized by a desire to “perpetuate giving” through a will, a trust, an annuity, or some other planned vehicle, and are recognized by membership in the Boyden Society. You are Deerfield Academy’s greatest advocate. No publication, public appearance, or letter can take the place of an enthusiastic update from a friend who not only understands what’s happening at Deerfield today, but also understands what supporting it will mean to his or her generation of Academy graduates. ANNUAL/SENIOR PARENT GIVING 2011–2012
Alumni and parents together raised a total of $5,775,518 towards Annual Giving. Parent contributions to the Annual Fund totaled $1,700,000, with 68% parent participation (including alumni parents). Total Senior Parent Giving was $1,800,000 towards the Campaign to Honor the Class of 2012, as well as an additional $225,000 towards Annual Giving (with 84% participation). The outreach of our 600+ annual and parent volunteers clearly helped Deerfield’s message stay strong, and made all the difference in the end. Thank you so much!

Fundraising Glossary of Terms
Acknowledgement: A receipt that acknowledges a gift or pledge, generated by Deerfield’s gift processing.
Endowment: Gifts to the Academy that remain invested and are spent using a conservative draw formula ensure financial stability for the long term.
Fiscal Year: The school’s financial year, which runs from July 1–June 30.
LYBUNT: Solicitable donors who contributed “Last Year But Unfortunately Not This” year.
Matching Gift: Parents and alumni may request that donations be directed to Deerfield through their employers’ (or their spouses’ employers’) matching gift programs by contacting their employers. Company programs may be reviewed at matchinggift.com/Deerfield.
NOS: Any Deerfield constituent who does not wish to be solicited for support can be coded NOS (“No Solicit”) based on a call, email, or written request.
Parent Giving: Gifts of cash or securities made by current parents that make an immediate impact for Deerfield by funding our ability to attract the best students and teachers and allowing them to learn on our beautiful campus.
Participation Rate: The percentage of solicitable members of a class who donated in a given campaign year.
Recurring Giving: Gifts can be made monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually for up to five years.
The 1797 Society: Recognition of donors who contributed $5,000 or more during the fiscal year. Prior to the 20th reunion year, the qualifying amount is $1,797.
Senior Parent Giving: We ask parents of seniors to consider gifts of cash or securities that are a multiple of their Annual giving, which are then directed toward a capital or endowment purpose chosen by senior parents, together with the Academy. This contribution may be spread out over a period of three to five years.
