2010 Guangzhou Asian Games Village

SWA provided master planning, urban design, and

landscape architectural services for the 650-acre 2010

Guangzhou Asian Game Village. The site’s existing water

channels served as the backbone of an open-space

system, forming a new connective tissue between the

mountains in the north and the Pearl River in the south.

The result is multiple city centers that divide the Asian

Game Village into four major function areas. These

quadrants are situated around an open body of water

that serves as the main focal point of the village, as well

as an effective security barrier during the Asian Games.

The site’s aesthetic is modeled after the local village

pattern, which includes a f lat meadow open space

(rice paddies) surrounded by hills that are populated

with residential housing and heavily planted forestry.
