Speed, slippery road result in crash
Students should utilize Bennion Center
By Michael McFallThursday’s snowstorm wrecked at
least two people’s days.
A gold Toyota Camry, traveling west
on 100 South, crashed into a silver
Ford SRG, traveling east, shortly after
2 p.m.
The driver of the Toyota, a middle-
age woman, was traveling too fast for
Thursday’s snowy conditions, accord-
ing to the Salt Lake City Police De-
partment. She slid into the opposing
lane when she turned the corner from
North Campus Drive to 100 South,
crashing into a silver Ford a student
was driving.
Neither driver complained of injury,
police said.
The hood of the Toyota was com-
pletely smashed. The Ford lost its front
bumper and sustained other minor
damages to the front of the vehicle.
Both cars were towed.
Traffic headed eastbound on 100 South was narrowed to one lane for
about half an hour as police cleared the
scene.
The woman was cited for speeding,
but officers at the scene did not have the exact speed she was traveling.
By Michael WhiteThe Bennion Community Service
Center at the U is a great opportunity
that often gets overlooked. Students
looking to contribute more to their
community or bolster their résumé
should make the Bennion Center
their first stop. I know students are busy with
school and jobs, but who doesn’t
have a little time during their four or
five years at the U to make a differ-ence and give something back to the
community from which students take
so much?
You don’t need to have loads of
experience or time to volunteer at
the Bennion Center. Christy Tobolski,
public relations coordinator for the
center, said, “The misconception
about volunteering is that students
don’t have the time or experience...
This is where you get experience.”
Don’t most students have a little
spare time here and there? I know
U students are busy, but cut back a
little on the video games or television
and walk into the Bennion Center.
Students might be surprised to find they actually do have the time.
The Bennion Center offers a wide
variety of ways to get involved and
give back to the community. With
more than 60 service projects cover-
ing a variety of community issues,
students can surely find a way to contribute. The Bennion Center has
opportunities for students that require
as little as a day’s worth of work. But
why would you want to give just a
few hours? Students should take the
time to really get involved.
Even if students’ only motiva-
tion is to improve their grad school
applications or résumés, the Ben-
nion Center is the place to do it.
The Service Learning Scholarship
Program offered to students is one of
the best opportunities on campus to
give a little and get something great
in return.
The program is beneficial to both students and the community. Accord-
ing to JaNae Lilly, service-learning
coordinator, “Students come away
knowing how to directly apply their
degree to their community.” What
future employer wouldn’t appreciate
that? Often students graduate from
the U with no idea how to use their
