It is good to remember Gods
good hand with us. In Luke 16:25,
the Word says . . . Son, remember.
. . . There have been several
recent activities that brought
back memories o the dear Lords
gracious dealing, leading, and
blessing.
In December, Joyce and I
reected on our 54 years o servicewith Source o Light. God has
wonderully provided or us and
or this aith ministry as it has
expanded beyond what we or other
members could have imagined in
those early years. Some o you,
our readers, have been used o
God to help, by encouragement o
prayer, support, communication,
and advice. To God be the glory or
the souls saved; the Word o God
through Bible lessons distributed,
now in 144 languages with more
translations in process; disciples
made; and many churches planted.
I have been reminded o our
Director, Dr. Bill Shades frst
message to us, The best is yet to
be, and have praised God with
ull heart as the reports indicate
new lessons, languages, countries,
methods, and technology or Gods
Good News.
Other memories are o the
passing o dear missionary riends
with SLM. One was my brother-
in-law, Don Nabinger, who went
to be with the Lord last year. I had
great respect and appreciation orhis pioneer missionary work in the
rugged Yukon village work, and
later as he used our adapted Bible
lessons to reach souls in many
villages. Another, Mel Sheppard
just went to be with the Savior he
loved. It was my great privilege
to pray weekly with Mel in Cam
Thompsons prayer room, and to
travel and minister with him here
and in other countries.
Recently it has been my
privilege to visit churches that use
our Bible lessons or door-to-door
evangelism, neighborhood Bible
studies, Sunday school and prayer
meeting study, and prison ministry.
So Son, remember is not just or
past blessings, but or what God is
doing right now. Praise His Name!4
Marks Gospel, chapter 6, records
Jesus eeding o the fve thousand
and what then ollowed. Jesus sent
his disciples by boat to Bethsaida,
while he retired to the mountain to
pray. As darkness settled, a violent
storm ensued and the disciples
were in the middle o the sea. It is at
that point that the Scripture startles
us with this poignant statement, He
saw them.
The sea o Galilee has a
circumerence o thirty-three miles
and is thirteen miles long and eight
miles wide. It is impossible to see
even a large ship on a clear day in
the middle o the sea. Yet in the
blackest o nights, in the midst o
the storm, Jesus not onlysawthem,
but saw their desperation, toiling in
rowing. And He came to their aid,
walking on the waves in the midst o
the storm.
Around the world today, in India,
in Sudan, in Indonesia, in China,
in North Korea, and in a growing
number o lesser known places,
there swirls a thick, dark storm cloud
o persecution which surrounds the
people o God. It is now believed that
there have been more martyrs in this
generation than in all preceding ones
together. We oten orget, because
those who are suering are aceless.
We do not see them we cannot
know them. But there is One, who
assures us that it is not so with Him.
And He saw them . . .may be written
over the lie o every suering saint.
In the Old Testament, the
wandering Hagar discovered that
God had His eye on her as she sat
by the well Lahi-roi, meaning thewell o Him that liveth and seeth me
(Genesis 16:14). He is the same
today. He is alive and He sees. And
when He sees He comes to meet us
in our suerings and trials.
Western Christianity has known
little o the suering endured by
the rest o the world, and thus we
easily lose the awareness o our
need or His presence. But suering
and persecution is nearer thanwe think. Enmity and contempt or
Christ and His people is increasing
exponentially in this country and in
Europe. Secular humanism as well
as radical Islam present a clear and
present danger. But o this we may
be assured, that no matter what our
situation may be, He will see us,
know our struggles, and in a manner
beftting our need, will come walking
on the waves to our aid.

It was said that it couldnt be done.
How can a ministry be conducted chiey
through volunteers in a country wherethe national average yearly income was
estimated by the World Bank in 2005 to
be $120 (40 cents a day)?
Most people in the city rely on public
transport to get rom place to place and
it is not ree to ride in those taxis or
buses. How would these volunteers
aord to pay or their transport? Not
only the cost o the transport was to
be considered, but also the struggle toget that transport. Kinshasa is a city
o over fve million people and the
transportation system is not adequate
to meet the needs. One has to oten
wait or hours and then fght to get a
seat in the overly crowded run-down
vehicle. Who would go through all that
to carry Bible lessons back and orth
rom our ofce to students all over the
city? No one, unless it was someonecommitted to carrying out the Great
Commission o our Lord Jesus Christ
(Matthew 28:19-20).
One must understand that Kinshasa,
the capital o the Democratic Republic
o the Congo, doesnt have a properly
unctioning postal system. Even i it
was unctioning, most o the population
could not aord to use it.
So, i a Bible correspondence
program was going to work, the lessons
would have to be hand delivered.
In 2000, Brian and Gwenda Trapp
began a Source o Light Associate
Discipleship School in Kinshasa.
Using a small laundry room as an
ofce, they hired one worker, Alain
Elembo, to process the French lessons.
Alain was a committed Christian and
worked through the lessons eagerly. He passed the news onto his riends
and people began coming to the
ofce to pick up lessons or riends,
amily, work associates, churches, and
military buddies. Soon, there were
people waiting outside the ofce, all
volunteers, to collect their lessons and
take them to their mission felds.

now a Discipleship Training Branch
o Source o Light Ministries
International in Madison, will celebrate
its 8th anniversary this year. Vadette
Nlandu, a national Congolese, directs
the ministry with a board o national
directors. They have enrolled 6,950students, and 160 o these students have
reported that they have received Christ
through doing the lessons. Kings
Source o Light Congo is an ofcially
recognized non-proft organization
in the Congo and will complete the
purchase o its own property this year.
The ministry has recently partnered
with Missionary Aviation Fellowship,
who has agreed to take lessons intoareas where they y regularly in the
interior o the Congo. Volunteers
traveling into neighboring countries
have also brought new students to the
ministry rom Rwanda and Congo
Brazzaville.
The biggest challenge we now ace
is keeping up with our volunteers. We
have the laborers, but we are having a
hard time keeping up with the supply
o lessons. Please pray that God will
keep our shelves stocked with lessons
so that students will not have to wait
to do lessons. We currently have 500
students on waiting lists.
A soldier recently wrote to share
this testimony: I was attending anArican traditional cult. God met me
through the Bible lessons. Since that
time, I decided to stop attending that
cult. I surrendered my heart to God.
Now I can read the Bible, watch and
listen to the Christian TV and radio
programs which I couldnt do beore.
Another student wrote to say:Beore, I was a tough guy. I was not
able to attend church service. These
lessons have changed my lie. Even
my neighbors noticed the dierence in
me. I am now a deacon.
It was said that it couldnt be
done, but God has done it! For with
God nothing shall be impossible
(Luke 1:37).

As a waterfall cannot stop a river in its way toward the
sea, no prison can stop those who seek God with all theirhearts to return to Him, confesses Adrian Stroe, a prisoner
for life in a maximum security penitentiary in Romania.
After he completed all the
correspondence courses with lots of
dedication, he continued to keep in
touch with his spiritual mentors, day
by day wishing to learn, to understand
the Word of God and more of salvation. From the moment he received Jesus as
Lord and Savior, everyone around him
saw a radical change in his life a
change for the better in his character
and his behavior (which had been
really aggressive before).
In 2002, Adrian had the initiative of starting a Christian
magazine, which he name Emanuel. He worked hardon that. His passion for Jesus culminated in the year of
2006, when he published a book, Free in the Land of the
Lord. In the book, he writes with lots of talent, giving his
testimony of repentance, and essays about the new life in
Christ that he is presently living.

to think and to choose i we will give Him our lie. I
I would have had a spiritual leader, to show me the
way o God while I was a child, I am very condent
that my lie would not have ailed in such suering
and painul loneliness, in which I have orever lost
the greatest and holiest git: reedom. I come rom a
amily where I received a chosen education, but the
years spent in school did not teach me to get closer to
aith in our heavenly Father, and now I greatly regret
the time I have lost.
It is crazy to meditate on happiness, when you are
a convict . . . And its very daring to try to give a
denition o happiness when youre surrounded by
high walls, cold bars, locks, and guards . . . when
you are araid o everything and you are not sure
o anything . . . but still try to think about things
that can fy over the walls, that can ignore the locks,
and the guards the obvious looks, and even your
own conscience which cruelly points a nger at you.
Think beautiul! And what can be more beautiul
than trying to dene happiness! Do it rom your own
view, with your own words; it could be a masterpiece
that could make your lie more beautiul. Because
happiness . . . is a state o peace its a matter o
choosing.
Adrians testimony encourages us to preserve the service
that we were called to, because the correspondence
ministry can bring the Light of the Gospel, salvation and
freedom to anyone anywhere: both to those that are
free, but dont appreciate their freedom, and to those
who, because of the abuse that they have done, live the
rest of their lives behind bars.

Who hath saved us, and called
us . . . according to his own purposeand grace . . .(2 Timothy 1:9). This verseadequately sums up the story of HaileSelassie Tefera and his wife, Tsedale.
Born and reared in Christian homesin Ethiopia, both Haile and Tsedalecame to know Jesus as personalSavior when they were teenagers.Haile relates that the complete changein his sisters life after she became a
Christian convinced him he shoulddo the same and so, at the age ofseventeen, he trusted Christ as HisSavior. At the University of Ethiopia,Haile met and later married Tsedale.
In 1990, Haile received anopportunity to immigrate to the UnitedStates, where he hoped to achieve the
American dream. He was eventuallyable to own a home, a car, and
everything he and his family wanted. He says that during those years, Godwas shut up in a closet and once ina while he would open the door andtalk to Him. Otherwise, he didnt giveGod any time in his life. But that allchanged.
In 2004, former SLM director,Glenn Dix, met Haile and later Tsedale.Learning that they were Christians,
Glenn brought Haile to see the ministryof Source of Light. When he saw thecourses and realized the powerfulimpact they could have on the countryof Ethiopia, Haile expressed a desireto financially support a Branch office in
Addis Ababa. Haile thought they wouldlive in America and support the ministry
in Ethiopia, but God had other ideas. On a trip to Ethiopia in 2006, East
Africa director, Jack Stiles, challengedHaile to consider returning to Ethiopiato direct the ministry there. Hisimmediate reaction was, No way. This all changed as Haile began toobserve how God was using him topromote the ministry in Ethiopia
When Haile returned home, he
asked Tsedale if she would like toreturn to Ethiopia as a missionary, andshe replied, God has been talking tome about that in my prayer time.
The Tefera family, including theirthree daughters, plan to return toEthiopia in July. Pray for their remain-ing support needs of approximately$1,500 per month, as they begin thisvital work in Ethiopia.

I AM GOD appears thirty-
seven times in eight chapters of
Leviticus (Chapter 18-25). God
was establishing His authority
for expecting certain conduct of
His people. It is a good reminderfor us in the Madison Discipleship
School for Gods authority in our
lives and those of the students.
For some time, the active student enrollment has been on a
fat line, but we have seen a blip on the chart that indicates
the school has come to life and on the increase. This is due in a
large part to the students enrolling their friends.
We have seen an increase in the personnel. We thank God
for four new people that have joined the team. I was asked to
take over the leadership of the Madison Discipleship School
last August. My wife, Wanda, is also a full-time volunteer. InSeptember, Joe and Nita Certain joined us as volunteers with
the prison ministry. Joe came with a background of advising
prisoners how to live for the Lord.
With this growth, it has put pressure on the staff because of
space limitations. Increased expenditures and the need of
additional volunteers. Perhaps you should join the SLM Team.
The words of God through Leviticus are still true.I AM GOD.

Have you ever felt like a loser?
Well, that was the state of mind Nita
was in when she joined the navy
and became a nurse. There she met
Joe Certain. Less than two monthsafter they were married, the Navy
shipped Joe to Scotland. Shortly
after that, Nita got out of the Navy
and joined him there. She settled
in Dunoon, Scotland, to make my
sailor a happy life, but somethinghappened to her one day while Joe
was at the ship.
Nita sat down at her living room
table, a Bible was in her hand, one
maybe left by a former tenant? Asshe opened it, the words God is
not mocked: for whatsoever a man
soweth, that shall he also reap
(Galatians 6:7), spoke to her. That
day her hungry heart responded as
she wept tears of repentance. That
night Joe returned to a changed
home . . . and a changed wife. Her
persistent testimony soon prompted
him to also follow the Lord Jesus.
Nitas zeal to tell others about
Jesus motivated her to begin
ministering to Scottish children,
giving them hope in Jesus. She and
Joe teamed in ministry, reaching
many through Billy Graham flmsand Bible studies.
Georgia became their home when
God revealed a new plan for them.
They sold their home, bought an RV,
and set out to fnd a need and fll
it. Their travels have taken them
to Child Evangelism Fellowship,
Warrenton, Missouri, and Wycliffe
headquarters in Orlando, Florida. They have been active in Campers
on Mission for several years.A few months ago, a large RV
turned into SLM parking lot. Two
people came in and with a hearty
greeting said, Were the Certains, full-
time mission ministry volunteers!
What a joy to have servants so willing
to go anywhere, at any given moment,
to serve Christ! Madison Discipleship
School is growing. They have been a
tremendous help, grading lessons and
sharing Bible truths with students.Their enthusiasm and excitement over
what God is doing in a life is evidentevery day. Were glad theyre here!

would have thought they wouldultimately become soldiers of the

When, in the course of humanevents, it becomes necessaryfor one people to dissolve the bondswhich have connected them withanother . . . Not pleasant words, but, in the nature o the case, necessary. So begins the documentthat changed the course o historyon this continent and created theland o liberty we enjoy today.
There are times that suchaction is still called or and
that time came or SLM in relationto our ormer partnership withAJI India. Ater years o trying tocorrect the problems in the centraloce, SLM decided to terminatethat relationship in January othis year. But the problems wereat the administrative level - theworkers and evangelists o AJI
were all doing an outstanding job. Scores o churches planted, hundreds o souls saved, yet wewere orced by biblical principleto take the action we did.
God is always previous andHe was certainly previous
in this matter. No sooner had wetaken the action o separationrom AJI than the Zonal Leaders
contacted us, asking to come with
SLM and continue their ministryunder our direction. Tat meantresignation rom AJI, and italso meant a huge step o aithinvolving support, properties, and more. But so serious were theproblems they elt compelled totake that step.
For SLM to be able to aidthem in a oreign country,
we have to have registration withthe Government as a religiousorganization, or a partnershipwith an existing nationalorganization. Again, God wasprevious. Seven years ago, I had
helped a ormer student romBharat Bible College establish an
Christudas and Dr. Shade
17
organization called Goodnews orAll People, or GAP. SLM has beenworking with that organization orseveral years now on a peripherallevel. In January, I ew to Indiaand met with the GAP board andDirector, Rev. Christudas Earla.
Te result o that meeting was anew partnership, known as SLM/GAP.
On February 9, the ZonalLeaders aced the AJI Board
and leadership and presentedthem with their resignations enmass. As o this writing, everyleader rom every zone in India has joined with us. Tat means that
all o the pastors, evangelists, andworkers and all o the churchesunder their direction are nowdirectly underthe SLM banner and there issuch a spirit oexpectation andreedom as musthave been presentwhen that frstd o c u m e n twas signed inPhiladelphia in1776.
But ahead othe signers
o that document was a long anddicult struggle and each o usinvolved in this action knows that
ahead o us is the same. Some lookto the possibility o losing theirhomes, their church buildings, and more. But they count it worththe price to honor God and do theright thing. We here at SLM nowace the challenge o a budget o
$10,000 per month a budget orwhich we are in no way prepared. But God has been previous in allelse, and He will not ail us now.
We will return to Indiabeore you read this article
and begin the process o totalreorganization or the greatestadvance o the Gospel we haveever made on that continent.
Please pray or us pray orthese men, these leaders, andthose who serve under them. Pray
or wisdom and vision as we chartthe course o a new day in India, and pray that God will meet theirneeds by meeting ours.

What happens to trees and houseroofs and other buildings
during hurricane season in Florida? They are uprooted and damaged ordestroyed. Why? Because they werenot firmly grounded, or establishedon a secure and sure foundation.
Since 2005, it has been the goalof SLM to provide doctrinally
sound Bible study materials toMainland China. The purpose has
been that Chinese churches would be
established in their faith. Our hopeis built on nothing less than Jesus
blood and righteousness is as truefor our brothers and sisters in Chinaas it is for us here in America. Nothingelse but a firm understanding ofthe living Word of God will providestability and security to the believer.
Mass distributions of SLMliterature characterized 2005-
2006, with just a few testimoniesreceived about the impact of theliterature. In 2007, the focus shiftedto more specific distributions andthe testimonies and reports arethrilling. One missionary pastor wasso impressed by the SLM coursesthat he began using them in all his
growing churches. He reported thatthe new believers were delighted
to have a book like ours tocarry with them to church. He taught a Sunday eveningBible class using SLMsNew
Life in Christ 1 course. Hehas requested 6,000 of the New
Life in Christ 2 course, to teach his
congregations. Praise the Lord!
In another large city, two men haveorganized an extensive network of
church fellowship groups that havetargeted colleges and universities 65% of their church members arestudents. Most are new believers. In mid-2007, SLM was delighted toprovide 500 copies of the New Lifein Christ 1 to follow up these new
believers. By the end of the year, thefellowships had grown to over 700members, so the leaders requested, and SLM provided them with 1,000copies of New Life in Christ 2. It isour great joy to partner with theseChinese church planters.
In 2008, SLM will be expanding itsministry into other areas of China.
For this expansion, we will need
$5,000 to print more Bible courses. Along with the explosive growth ofthe Church in China, there has beena proliferation of cults and variousexotic religions that masqueradeas biblical Christianity. So peopleunderstand the difference, we needto continue to publish and distribute
books that contain solid Bibleteaching. Remember that we can

are war-torn and where persecution
is prevalent. People are searching
or answers and Christ is that
answer.
Praise the Lord or His
care and provision or Penny

visit amily or Christmas, Penny

medical insurance in the United

undertook! Huge discounts were
given rom the medical providers
and Gods people sent gits to take
care o the rest.

Brother Mel, as many knew him, willbe greatly missed. After joining Sourceof Light, he was appointed to workwith Pan American Testament League,
where he served for 46 years. AfterBrother Cam Thompson went to be withthe Lord in 1961, his wife, Sister Dell, carried on the work, ably assisted byMel Sheppard. Faithful, diligent, andhumble are some of the words used todescribe him. He was a man of Godwith a servants heart and a real man ofprayer. A number have spent much timein seasons of prayer with him, inspiringthem beyond their natural inclinationin this area. Many called upon him forspecial prayer and counsel.
Brother Mel had many open doors as a preacher of the Word of God.He had a good pastoral ministry, counseling with those who called, wrote, or came by. He was a dear brother and friend to many.
Mel served as secretary for PATL, responsible for preparing newsletters for mailing, as well as the packaging and sending out of Bibles andother materials. He also was adept as bookkeeper for the organization. He acted as chauffeur for Mrs. Thompson when she was unable to drive.
Other responsibilities included correspondence, ordering Bibles andGospels in many languages, and making arrangements for the Gospel
distributions in many countries. This included over 200 contacts aroundthe world for ministry opportunities.
When a giant tree is cut down out of the forest, it makes room for thegrowth and development of the younger trees, enabling them to reachtheir potential. Brother Mel (or maybe someone close and dear to youto whom you looked for strength and help) is no longer here for thosewho looked to, or depended on him. Maybe the Lord wants you to followMels example and become a stalwart of the faith; a person of faith andprayer, who walks close to God and is able to be a help and guide toothers in their time of need. For thou art the glory of their strength: andin thy favor our horn shall be exalted(Psalm 89:17).
