Welcome message from Chairman
Welcome to Australia's only horse races on the beach.
The 2001 Schweppes Ocean Grove Cup Carnival has entered a new era with the move to Ocean Grove Main Beach and the introduction of reserved seating areas as well as Australia's first exhibition beach harness race.
This year's program embraces Australian icons and celebrates them with a bit of healthy competition, including Australia's first Esky Race and the men's Hawaiian shirt contest.
The bigger and better Schweppes Ocean Grove Cup Carnival is a result of the joint forces of the Apex, Lions and Rotary clubs.
Proceeds from the event are used to support local community projects and organisations.
Nearly 100 volunteers start from dawn and work right through the day to ensure that it is a fun-filled event for everyone.
Schweppes is our major sponsor for the fourth time and we thank them for their continued support of the event, along with our many generous and supporters.
I hope you have a fantastic day and appreciate this unique Aussie event.
Jason Corless Chairman Ocean Grove Cup Organising Committee
Message from Barwon Coast Committee of Management
The Barwon Coast Committee of Management is responsible for the coastal reserve from Collendina to Black Rock and has supported the Schweppes Ocean Grove Cup Carnival since its inception.
The Cup is a valuable community event that attracts visitors to our area.
The committee is proud to support the move to the Main Beach this year, as the new location will reduce the impact on the environment, increase safety and allow for the event to expand.
I hope you enjoy and respect the natural beauty of one of Victoria's most popular surf beaches.
Congratulations to the organising committee and best wishes for future Cup Carnivals.
Margaret Pocock Chairman Barwon Coast Committee of Management

What are Apex, Lions and Rotary?
Apex means "Height of Ambition" and is a young men's service organisation for 18 to 45 year olds. It was founded in Geelong during the Great Depression in 1931 and is now in 11 other countries throughout the world. Apex's aim is to improve the quality of life for everyone living in our communities.
Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service club organisation with more than 44,500 clubs in over 185 countries. The association's motto, "We Serve," precisely explains its mission.
Rotary is an organisation of business and professional leaders united worldwide, who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. There are approximately 1.2 million Rotarians in 163 countries. Rotary can best be described by its principle motto "Service Above Self'.
Entering a new chapter in beach racing history
The idea of horse racing on the beach started in 1985 when a young couple, Denis Walters and Christina Young, joked about whose horse was the fastest and so they held a race on Collendina Beach.
Denis won the race on his horse Regaite Lass and following the win he privately ran the Collendina Cup for five years.
In 1991 the Collendina Cup had a four-year recess until Walters suggested to his neighbour that the Apex Club should run the Cup as a fundraising event. The Apex Club took the challenge on and each year ran the race between Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove.
The first fundraiser in 1995 was called the Collendina Cup and the following year they named it the Ocean Grove Cup Carnival.
As the Cup Carnival became more popular the Apex Club decided without additional resources the event could not continue to grow. So the Ocean Grove Cup committee now consists of the Rotary, Lions and Apex Clubs, enabling a bigger and better Schweppes Ocean Grove Cup Carnival. The move to the Main Beach is the most recent chapter in the event's history and provides improved facilities for spectators, including reserved seating, a safer venue, easier access, better parking and reduced impact on the environment.
Thanks to all patrons for attending the 2001 Schweppes Ocean Grove Cup Carnival.
We hope you have a fantastic day. See you next year.
