13 FEBRUARY VOL.15 NO.3
From The School Leadership TeamEven though we’re only at the end of Week 3 of the term, we’ve
had lots of great opportunities for learning, connecting and
belonging.
Participation is one of the key features of belonging to the
Hillbrook community, and today it was palpable. Everyone could
see, hear and feel the sense of fun and belonging as our Year
7-12 students, in their four Home Class colour groups, fiercely contested the 2015 Swimming Carnival. We congratulate all
students and staff on the wonderful spirit and participation
evidenced throughout the day, and the brilliant organisation by
the Year 12 Sports Council and PE teachers who made the day
such a success. Congratulations to BLUE for the overall win!
This week also saw the SRC Executive and their mentor, Glenn
Stevenson continue the fun of hosting Valentine’s Day. With
thousands of roses, hundreds of serenades, ‘love potion’ cordial,
‘love shack’ photos and loads of smiles and some red faces; young
people and adults alike enjoyed the fun of celebrating friendship
and love.
At Hillbrook we believe that young people learn best when they
are having fun and feel connected to their school community. We
also know that clear goals and hard work are essential. Planning
and prioritising are part of the messages students from all year
levels have been hearing. It is time to start these behaviours,
if students haven’t already done so, and to make them part of
their 2015 learning habits. Assessment items will be due and
mini-block testing will be upon us before we know it. A visit to
online@hillbrook - Courses - Year Level General Info - will show
the Assessment Planners for each year level. Students will also
be able to find their calendars at this location. Only Year 7s and 8s will receive a hard copy next week.
Protecting our skin from harmful damage has to be a priority
for all Queenslanders. We have the highest rate of skin cancer
in the world. Based on recent statistics two out of every three
Queenslanders will develop a form of skin cancer in their
lifetime. According to Australian medical research, at least
two–thirds of melanomas could be prevented if children were
protected from the sun during their first 15 years. We therefore have a responsibility along with the individual and their families
to protect young people from damaging their skin. In the hot
months of summer, physical education lessons will be scheduled
indoors wherever possible (except for aquatics). All students are
required to purchase a school broad rim hat or bucket hat as part
of the uniform. It is compulsory for students to wear a school
broad rim hat for outdoor physical education lessons, excursions
and Outdoor Education. Students are to wear hats and are also urged to use sunscreen whenever they are exposed to the sun.
This includes lunchtimes and morning tea. Shaded areas are
provided around the school grounds in as many places as possible
and information and learning experiences about the dangers of
exposure to the sun are built into the school curriculum. But we
all must practise sun safety. Students will be reminded of these
expectations during Daily Starter next week. All students will
need to be able to show that they have their hat in their bag and
if they are out in the sun, they’ll need to have their hat on their
head.
We’ve enjoyed a great week of learning together in our
classrooms and beyond, and in participating in special days and
events. Participation helps make our community stronger and
more supportive, and our learning more focused and effective.

P&F AGM ~ Everyone Welcome! The AGM for the Hillbrook Parents and Friends’ Association is
being held at 6.30pm in the Library on Tuesday 17 February. If
you are interested in applying for a position or just want to be a
member of the P&F, there is a form attached to this newsletter.
Find out what the P&F have been doing and what is planned. The
P&F is a great way to get to know other families and to contribute
to the life of the school. Food and drinks are provided.
From Our Newest AdditionsIt’s almost as though Year 7s have always been a part of the
fixtures and fittings of Hillbrook. They’ve settled into their new learning spaces; they’re rattling off each other’s names like
they’ve known each other for eons, and they’re loving using their
iPads both in and outside the classrooms. Oh, and word on the street is that apparently the toilets are great.
In their daily classes the Year 7s are beginning to use a variety
of new (to them) tools and applications that have been carefully
selected to aid students in their studies. Some Maths classes
have started using Khan Academy – a tool that offers video
tutorials and practice exercises. Science classes are going to
be a part of an exciting new program called Thinking Science.
The program uses accelerated thinking skills to allow students
to gain an appreciation of Science phenomena, develop practical
understanding of concepts and increase both their confidence and participation. And all classes are uploading activities, content,
weblinks and differentiation options to the online@hillbrook site.
Blue and Green are now seasoned veterans to the Outdoor Ed program and Red and White will catch up to them next week.
Then there’s Valentine’s Day festivities, Swimming Carnivals,
Sandpit programs... phew. After all that, it must be time for a
holiday?

iPads at HillbrookThis year Hillbrook is using iPads as the primary computing device
for Years 7-9. The use of these mobile devices is designed to
introduce students to a broader variety of teaching and learning
activities, to further prepare them for this information-rich world.
We have just updated and launched the new iPads at http://ipad.
hillbrook.qld.edu.au/. This space is designed for both parents and
students to access a range of resources. Included in this space is
an up-to-date Apps list, information about parental controls and
a number of helpful guides. Parents and students are encouraged
to explore and bookmark the site.

Facebook Tips - Part 2Set rules about what’s appropriate to post. It is common practice
in today’s world that employers ‘Facebook stalk’ their potential
employees. Encourage your teens to be careful of which photos
they decide to share because it could hurt them in the future.
Teens also need to be thoughtful about their status updates, wall
posts, and comments on friends’ posts. Remind them that once
they post something, it’s out of their hands.
Encourage teens to self-reflect before they self-reveal. Teens are very much in the moment and are likely to post something they
didn’t really mean. Work with them on curbing that impulse. Teach
them to ask themselves why they’re posting something, who will
be able to read it, and whether it could be misunderstood or used
against them later.
‘Friend’ your teens. If your teens are in middle school, it may be
a sound policy to know what they’re posting, since teens at that
age don’t necessarily understand that they’re creating a digital
footprint.
Another Option For Year 12 Students - Diploma of Project ManagementThe program has been conducted for four years in two major
private schools proving effective on several counts. This year you
are invited to consider it.
Results1. Students learn a range of skills that stand them in good stead
as Project Managers are sought after in the workplaces of
Australia.
2. The learning has been proved to enhance academic results
for OP Students particularly during the past two years.3. Students can achieve a rank order equivalence of an OP
6-9 by attaining the Diploma thus improving their possible
tertiary entry options.
Our record to date in the past four years, has shown that no students have withdrawn and none have failed to achieve the
diploma. This is a tribute to my excellent staff and to the small
numbers in classes. Our teacher student ratio is 1 teacher to 4 students. Nobody misses attention.
Course ‘The project’ has the students manage all their assignment,
exams and assessments for a semester of Year 12. In so doing
they learn to apply all the principles of Project Management
including Scope, Time, Quality, Cost, HR, Communications,
Risk, Procurement, Integration Management, with the addition
of Stakeholder Engagement, Managing Meetings and Teamwork.
This is proved through four assignments within the Diploma
Program. The in class component of it is 60 hours matched by a
similar number of hours for the diploma assessment work spread
over three terms. Classes are held out of school time at a central
location with times negotiated to suit participants.
The total cost is $4,400 payable in two instalments - one at the
commencement and the second, half way through. A payment
plan is also possible.
We provide:• The Program folder and work books
• The Team Management Profile - useful for understanding the complexity of teams
• All templates for plans, reports and working tools
• MS Project Training to enable meaningful project manage-
ment technology use
• Individual support - email , phone and face-to-face
Further InformationWe are establishing a cohort drawn from several schools. This was
a successful initiative trialled last year and we open the option
to Hillbrook parents and students. If you are interested to know
more, a Parent/Student Information Evening will be programmed
and I will forward you the details. Please contact Dr Elaine
Roberts on 0407 695 502 or email [email protected]

a Remote Area First Aid training course here at Hillbrook on the
weekend of 28 February to 1 March.
This course is very practical and useful for anyone who likes to
go adventuring off the beaten track. What sort of First Aid skills
and knowledge do you need in the outdoors when you do not have
mobile reception, or an ambulance is over an hour away? The
course is primarily for our students, but there are a few extra
spots available. The cost of the weekend is $250.

Duke of Edinburgh at Hillbrook! Are you keen to experience new activities, learn new skills and
interests, make new friends and have a highly valued international
award that looks great on your CV? If the answer is YES then the
Duke of Edinburgh Award is for you!
The Duke of Edinburgh program is a great addition to the Hillbrook
co-curricular activities for students. Challenge, adventure and
achievement are just some of the outcomes of the internationally
recognised award. To gain a bronze award students must be 14
years of age and will need to take part in physical recreation
activities, learning a skill, performing a service to the community
and organising an adventurous journey.
Hillbrook students are in the lucky position of being eligible for
a number of the components that are needed to complete the
Bronze award simply because they are Hillbrook students! As part
of the Hillbrook philosophy of a balanced curriculum, students
can easily fulfil the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award by the end of Year 12. For example:-
Adventurous Journey – Practice journey and training occurs
through the junior camps and activity days in Outdoor Education, and the Year 12 self-directed expedition fulfils the criteria for their Qualifying journey. Other camps are offered throughout the year for those who are keen to finish their award and move on to
their silver.
Physical Recreation – participation in club sports and project
active opportunities such as basketball, netball, cricket or
anything that makes you break a sweat.
Skill Development – participation in the Music program (learning
an instrument, joining a choir), or developing a skill in Debating,
Acting (school musical), Theatre Sports or acquiring a driver’s
licence also requires skill development (it must be sedentary).
Community Service – students can complete this component in
conjunction with the compulsory 20 hours of Community Action
required in Year 11, or involvement in Green Justice, or assistance
with the production of school musicals, involvement in the Smith
Family Reading Project or many other opportunities at school or
in their community to make a positive difference in the lives of
others.
If you are interested in taking part in this fantastic program or
would like to get more information then please visit online@
Hillbrook – Co-Curricular – Duke of Edinburgh Award. There will be
a meeting on Monday February 16 at lunchtime in G6 for anyone
who would like to sign up or find out more, or anyone who has recently joined up and may require some help getting started.
