During the years 1928 to 1930, researchers
at the Biochemical Institute of the
University of Copenhagen in Denmark wereanalyzing the effects of dietary changes
in young chicks. In 1935, Henrik Dam
discovered the importance of vitamin K
in supporting healthy blood coagulation.
Vitamin K is derived from the German
word koagulation, which means blood
clotting. Vitamin K aids in the production
of proteins, which play a role in the bodysnormal, healthy blood clotting process and
healthy bone formation.
Vitamin K is necessary for the activationof Matrix Gla Protein (MGP), which isrequired for the maintenance of healthyvascular elasticity and blood flow.
Vitamin K is found naturally in plantsources such as green, leafy vegetables, broccoli, fermented soybeans, Brusselssprouts, and animal sources such as butter, liver, cheese and eggs.
What is Vitamin K?
Benef its of Vitamin K2A growing body of research suggests that vitamin K has manybeneficial functions within the body, including:
Vitamin K1is found primarily in
green, leafy vegetables
and it is the most
abundant form of
vitamin K in the diet.
The human body
converts the vast
majority of vitamin K1
into vitamin K2.
Vitamin K2is less abundant than
K1in the typical diet.
It is most commonly
found in the forms
MK-4 (menatetrenone;
found in animalproducts) and MK-7
(menaquinone-7,
found in fermented
soybeans).
Supporting a healthy cardiovascular system
Promoting healthy blood flow by maintaining vascular elasticity
Promoting the gamma-carboxylation of osteocalcin in the bloodto help build and maintain strong bones
Regulating the metabolism of calcium and promoting healthycalcification of bones and teeth
