Opening prayer

Gracious Lord, We come with joy to worship you. Forgive our sins that this joy may be pure. Receive our praise and adoration that you may be blessed by our worship. Speak to us through your Word, that we may hear your guidance for our lives. In the name of Christ we pray, Amen.

Dear Lord, The Ten Commandments reminds me that I am to honor you, not only in how I relate directly to you through worship, prayer, and obedience, but also in how I relate to others. You are just as concerned about my relationships with other people as you are with my relationship with you.

Help me, Lord, to see my whole life as one giant act of worship. Yes, there will be times when I’m focused primarily on you, as in my daily devotions or weekly worship at church. But you will be honored, not only in my prayers and songs, but equally in my care for others. Amen.

The First commandment. You shall have no other gods before Me.

The first commandment Is the beginning point from which everything else flows. It establishes that there is a God in heaven who created all and rules over all. It is to Him and Him alone that we should bow in worship. It is to Him that we can come and seek answers to life’s difficult questions and challenges.

What decision should we make in a particular situation? As we acknowledge God, we can know the right decision and be assured that the result of our choice will be positive. As we acknowledge God as first in our lives, we can be assured that he will direct our paths and provide us those things that we need.

The question now is how we will respond to the First Commandment, "You shall have no other gods before Me."

Page 5: 10 Commandments Ppt

PRAYER1: Dear God, you are indeed the one true God. You are the

Creator of Heaven and Earth. The King of kings and Lord of lords. You alone are my Rock and my Redeemer. You know, Lord, that no other “god” in my life displaces you. But there are times when my loyalty is split, when I “worship” other gods. There are times I find it hard to surrender everything to you. I want to hang on to that which gives me safety and control. Forgive me, dear Lord, when I allow other “gods” into your presence.

Help me, by your grace and through your Spirit, to have no other “god” in your presence. May my covenant relationship with you be exclusive in every way. May I put my full trust in you and you alone. And may I live for you each moment of each day, no matter what I’m doing. To you be all the glory, gracious and glorious God! Amen.

The Second Commandment. You shall not make unto thee any graven

image. The Second Commandment is a constant reminder that we

only, of all created things, are made in the image of God. Only we can be transformed into the spiritual image of Christ, who, of course, came in the flesh as the perfect spiritual image of our heavenly Father. This commandment protects our special relationship with our Creator, who made us in His likeness and is still molding us into His spiritual image. The Second Commandment reminds us that God is far greater than anything we can see or imagine. We must never let that knowledge be pushed aside by the use of some image or likeness in our worship of God.

Page 7: 10 Commandments Ppt

PRAYER2: Dear Lord, I thank you for the manifold images and ideas

that help me to know you. Yet, even as I am inspired and taught by images and ideas, help me not to become so enamored with these that they become idols. May I always remember that you are greater—indeed, infinitely greater—than any human formulation. May works of art become windows that allow me to glimpse you. Yes, now I see as through a mirror, dimly. But someday I will see you face to face!

All praise be to you, O God, because you are infinitely great. All praise be to you, O God, because you make yourself known to us even in our human limitations and sinfulness. All praise be to you, O God, because you lavish your unfailing love upon us. Amen.

The Third Commandment. You shall not take the name of the Lord God in

vain."Vain" means empty, useless, false, unreal, and worthless.

In short, taking God’s name in vain refers to the abuse, misuse, blasphemy, cursing, or manipulation of the Lord’s name. Why would you find it offensive if others were to treat your name disrespectfully? Names identify and instruct as to what something is. We all want good and honorable things associated with our names, because our names are reflections of who we are. All agree that a strong relationship is based upon respect. One of the most important ways to respect God is by reverencing His name. He tells us not to only obey Him, but also to hold His name as holy.

Page 9: 10 Commandments Ppt

PRAYER3: Gracious God, after many years of discipline, I still say “Oh

God!” as an exclamation. But when I consider the deeper meaning of this verse, I realize that I might very well trivialize your name by using it to further my own agenda. It does sound so much better to say “God wants” than “I want.” So, forgive me, Lord, for times when I don’t give your name the honor it deserves . . . when I don’t give you the honor you deserve.

Help me to honor your name in all things, even as I seek to honor you in all things. When I use your name, whether in prayer, in teaching, in writing, or in ordinary discourse, may I always do so with reverence and respect. All praise be to you, God Almighty, Father! Amen.

The Fourth Commandment.Remember the Sabbath day to keep it

holy.Too many of us live at a frantic pace, trying

desperately to stay on top of everything we need to get done. It's no wonder we feel out of touch with our families, our spouses, and even our Creator.

Page 11: 10 Commandments Ppt

PRAYER4: Gracious Lord, you know that many of us have a hard time

with this commandment. Partly, we don’t know quite how to keep it as Christians .Partly, we can feel that our lives are simply too full to allow for a weekly Sabbath.

Forgive us, Lord, for so easily ignoring one of your Ten Commandments.

Teach us how we who know you through Christ might faithfully and gracefully remember the Sabbath.

Help us to consider this commandment with our friends, families, and churches. May we discover how to rest so that we might enjoy deeper relationships with you and with each other. Amen.

Page 12: 10 Commandments Ppt

The Fifth Commandment. Honor your father and your mother.

Page 13: 10 Commandments Ppt

PRAYER5: Dear Lord, first, I want to thank you for the wonderful parents you have

given me. They faithfully raised me to know you and serve you. They loved me consistently, reflecting your own love through their faithfulness.

Thank you for my father, who has been with us for years now. Help me honor him in a way, that I can esteem him in my memory and in my prayers of gratitude. Thank you for my mother, who continues to be such a loving presence in my life and in the life of my family, not to mention a leader in your kingdom. Help me to honor her through offering her love and respect. And thank you, dear Lord, for those who have been like parents in my life. May I offer them the appreciation and love they deserve from me, even though we are not literal relatives.

Finally, today I pray for people whose relationships with their parents are difficult. Where there is division and hurt, bring reconciliation and healing. Where aging parents present tricky challenges, grant wisdom, patience, and strength to their adult children. And where children are mourning the loss of their parents, give comfort and hope. All praise be to you, Heavenly Father. Amen.

The Sixth Commandment. You shall not murder.

God wants us to go far beyond avoiding murder. He requires that we not maliciously harm another human being in word or deed. He desires that we treat even those who choose to hate us as respectfully as possible and do all within our power to live in peace and harmony with them. He wants us to be builders, not destroyers, of good relationships. To accomplish this we must respect this wonderful gift, this precious possession—human life.

Page 15: 10 Commandments Ppt

PRAYER6: Dear Lord, today I’m reminded about the sacredness of all human life.

What a glorious privilege to have been created in your image. Even though sin has tarnished that image, we still reflect you, however imperfectly. Though I have never found myself in a place where I wanted to take the life of another human being, I am challenged by what Jesus said about how we are to treat others. There are times, Lord, when, in my anger, I want to call people words. And, as you know, sometimes I give in to this temptation. Forgive me for the times I have disrespected the sacred humanity of other people. Help me to treat all people respectfully, even those with whom I disagree about significant matters.

Finally, I want to pray today for our society and the larger world. There is far too senseless killing in the world today, Lord. I yearn for the day when your kingdom comes with its peace and justice for all people. In the meanwhile, may I join with your church as we stand for the sacredness of human life, reaching out to treat all people with respect and love, for your sake. Amen.

The Seventh Commandment You shall not commit adultery.

Companionship is one of the greatest blessings we can gain from a stable and loving relationship/marriage. God recognized this when he created us. "And the LORD God said, 'It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.“

"Two are better than one, for their partnership yields this advantage: if one falls, the other can help his companion up again.” Most of us need the support and companionship of a loving friend/spouse. We need someone special who can share our ups and downs, triumphs and failures. No one can fill this role like a friend/mate who shares with us a deep love and commitment. Society suffers because we have lost the vision that God had for marriage from the beginning. Marriage is not a requirement for success in pleasing God. But it is tremendous blessing to couples who treat each other as God intended. Most people desire and need the benefits that come from a stable marriage. To return to what God intended, we must give marriage the respect it deserves. We must faithfully obey our Creator's commandment.

Page 17: 10 Commandments Ppt

PRAYER7: Gracious Lord, thank you for the reminder to be faithful in my

relationship/marriage. Even though I am not inclined to commit adultery today, I need to remember to nurture my relationship/marriage. Help me to love my friend/spouse as you love the church. Help us to build a strong, healthy relationship that will last. Dear Lord, I want to intercede today for those who are in difficult marriages. I can think of friends who are struggling, and I’m sure there are many of them who are in a hard place in their relationship/marriage. Help them, dear Lord, to reach out for help. And if folks are tempted to commit adultery, let your Spirit convict their hearts of the wrongness of this choice. May they seek instead to bring wholeness to their marriages.

I want also to pray for those who are in the midst of the pain of adultery, both for adulterers and for victims. May they find from you what their hearts need, whether forgiveness or healing or hope or trust. Let your grace fill their hearts and their lives, as only you can do. Amen.

The Eighth Commandment. You shall not steal.

Gods approach to material wealth is balanced. He wants us to prosper and enjoy physical blessings. He also expects us to show wisdom in how we use what He provides us. But He does not want possessions to be our primary pursuit in life. When we see material blessings as a means to achieve more-important objectives, God enjoys seeing us prosper. God wants us to have confidence in the future. His Word is full of promises concerning our future in His Kingdom. If we believe those promises, we will invest our time and energy in acquiring a wealth of spiritual treasures that will last forever—treasures that no thief can take from us.

Page 19: 10 Commandments Ppt

PRAYER8: Dear Lord, you know everything I think and

everything I do. You see that which I do in secret. You know if I am stealing, and you’re not convinced by my rationalizations. At this moment, I can’t think of ways in which I am taking that which isn’t mine. But I may very well be doing so without being aware of it. So I ask you to help me. Let me see my as you see it, so that I might honor you in choosing not to steal. Help me, Lord, especially when I am tempted to “borrow” that which isn’t mine. If I use someone else’s idea, may I give credit where credit is due. And when I’m doing my daily norms, may I tell the whole truth, even when it costs me. Thank you, Lord, for helping me to live for your glory each moment of each day. Amen.

Page 20: 10 Commandments Ppt

The Ninth Commandment. You shall not bear false witness.

Jesus Christ's character is a perfect reflection of the character of our heavenly Father, the God of truth. In response to a question from one of His disciples, Jesus said: "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." To be disciples of Jesus Christ we must resolve to consistently speak the truth, demonstrating the sincerity of our love for others. We must also accept and obey, "the way of truth," the commandments and teachings of God. Samuel tells us, "Only fear the LORD, and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for consider what great things He has done for you.“ God wants us, as His children, to commit ourselves to truth and reflect it in everything we do. That is why God commands us: "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor“. To Him it is important that generosity rather than greed motivate the choices we make. Because they are qualities of His own character, He asks that we, from the heart, put giving and serving ahead of lavishing possessions on ourselves. Temptations to lie never cease. They are always present. Lying is such a quick and effortless way to gain an advantage over others. It appears to offer easy and swift escape from embarrassment, fear and guilt.

Page 21: 10 Commandments Ppt

PRAYER9: Dear Lord, Indeed, I sometimes am less than

truthful. I don’t like confrontation. I don’t like relational disagreement. I want to be liked. And so I stretch the truth beyond the breaking point. Forgive me, Lord, when I testify falsely in my life. Help me to be someone who speaks and lives truthfully. May I reflect your character in all that I do and say. May this be true in my family life and in my work, in casual conversation and in official communications. May I rightly discern your truth and convey it accurately. All praise be to you, God of truth! Amen.

Page 22: 10 Commandments Ppt

The Tenth Commandment. You shall not covet.

Our natural inclination is always to think of ourselves first. We are far more interested in what we can get rather than what we can give. That is the essence of what God is denouncing in the Tenth Commandment. He tells us to stop thinking only of ourselves, to quit seeking only our interests. Coveting is the selfish approach to life, and selfishness is the root of our transgressions of God's laws.

Wanting to excel in our life's pursuits can be an appropriate ambition. If being useful to others is our objective, God approves of our gaining the necessary skills and knowledge that bring favor and advancement in this life. As a wise servant of God wrote: "Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before unknown men".

God wants concern for others to be the motivation for our desires. Sometimes our service to them will result in wonderful rewards for us. But only if our hearts are focused on giving rather than getting will our desires be channeled in the right direction. We must replace coveting with service and love for other people.

Page 23: 10 Commandments Ppt

PRAYER10: Dear Lord, as I think about it, I’m surprised by how

easily I can allow coveting to dominate my heart. I see someone with something I want—usually, some new piece of electronic equipment—and I dwell upon getting it for myself. I expect there are other evidences of coveting in my life that I’m not even seeing right now. Show me my heart, Lord, so that I might confess to you and be forgiven.

Fill my heart with contentment and my lips with gratitude, so that covetousness might find no place within me. Thank you, dear Lord, for all the ways you have blessed me: materially, relationally, physically, spiritually. How good you are to me! Amen.
