4 FORT NEPEAN Firing the first shot of WWIFort Nepean at Port Phillip Heads protected the narrow entrance to the bay from 1870, and became known as Victoria’s Gibraltar. The fort has other attractions relating to its defence function: Fort Pearce Barracks (1910) and an elevated area that contained a disappearing gun called Eagles Nest
(1889). Military history, coupled with spectacular scenery, makes this a notable location.Point Nepean National Park. Open 10-5.
In the modern era, familiar with sophisticated military operations where drones make air strikes on far-distant
targets, the fortifications around Port Phillip Bay appear quaint, part of a simpler bygone era. However, when they were constructed in the late 19th and early 20th
Century, they were ‘state of the art’ and our only defence against threats from the sea.
Moving around Port Phillip Bay, you will visit Fort Nepean; a special place both for its military history and spectacular scenery. The first
shot fired for both World Wars came from Fort Nepean.Queenscliff Fort, with its superbly restored buildings, tours and activities, provides the counterpoint to Fort Nepean. Between them, they defended the entry to the bay. When constructed,
Britain was at war with Russia in the Crimea and the Russians were thought to pose a threat. Later, wars such as the Boer War and WWI
accentuated the need for coastal protection.Your travels will take you to a moving cairn at Queenscliff, the
‘ships’ graveyard’, HMAS Cerberus, the premier naval training base, HMAS Castlemaine at Williamstown and other maritime museums. The armed forces cannot be ignored, with a visit to the Australian National Aviation Museum and the RAAF Museum at Point Cook,
reminding us that air defence replaced coastal security.
