COURT NOTES
Gas drilling foes raise civil liberties issueBy Patrick Sweet
Staff Writer
DALLAS TWP. Naturalgasdrilling may leadto a vio-lation of Pennsylvanianscivil liberties.
At least, that was one of
theclaims made bymembersof the Gas Drilling Aware-ness Coalition an outspo-ken anti-drilling group atits meeting Wednesday nightat the Dallas United Method-istChurch. Because the stateconstitution guaranteesclean airand water, theysaid,if a gas driller contaminatesa homes water supply it hasviolated that homeownersconstitutional rights.
We have to succeed instopping this industry, coali-tion founder Dr. ThomasJiuntasaid.
Themeetingwas held afterDallas Townshipsupervisorsadmitted they didnt knowenough about natural gasdrilling when Chief Gather-ing LLC a subsidiary ofTexas-based Chief Oil & Gas
approached the townshipabout acquiring a 50-foot
easement for a pipeline torun through a park on OldTunkhannock Highway.
Coalition members saidtownship supervisors PhilipWalter, Frank Wagner andGlenn Howell were in atten-dance but left directly afterthemeeting.Attempts to con-tact each at his home wereunsuccessful.
Chief representativesWar-ren Mahan and Larry Kingweresupposedto give presen-tations,coalition member LizMartin said. Neither was inattendance.
Jiunta, a podiatric sur-geon, gave a presentationabout therisksof natural gasdrilling to the group extend-ing into more than a dozenpews.
Im nota scientist, Imnot
a geologist, Im not an engi-neer, Jiunta said, Ive beenstudying this stuff for abouta year I think we all needto wake up to whats goingon.
Jiunta pointedto the envi-r o n m en t a l d i s a st e r i nDimock Township as evi-dence of natural gas drill-ings impact. He also gave awell blow-out in ClearfieldCounty and a number of
pipeline accidents reportedby the Associated Press asexamples.
The state Department ofEnvironmental Protection,Jiuntasaid, along with stateand county officials need tostep forward and protect resi-dents.
It behooves everybody toget their water independent-
ly tested, Jiunta said. Ourcounty elected officials havedone nothing to protect us.Ourstate Legislatureis doingnothing to protect us.
The group praised stateRep. Phyllis Mundys spon-sorship of a drilling morato-rium. The Kingston Demo-crats bill was co-sponsored
by state Rep. Karen Boback,R-Harveys Lake.
State Sen. Lisa Baker, R-Harveys Lake, on the otherhand, was lambastedfor notstanding behind the morato-rium. A representative forBaker toldthe group the sen-
ator was taking other ave-nues to protect her constitu-ents because the moratoriumwouldnever pass.
He eventually gave up onspeaking after severalshout-ing people in the crowdrepeatedlyinterruptedhim.
