Equity Market - Focus on long term reforms over short term
sugar booster
- Harshad Patwardhan, CIO - Equities
Before the budget was presented, market participants were under
the dilemma if the government will choose to kick-start the slowing
economy with short term measures or will stay focused on its long
term goals. However, the government has made its intent clear by
believing in long term reforms, though short term benefits would've
given markets the much desired impetus.
Positives like strategic disinvestment of select Central Public Sector
Enterprise in addition to relaxing FDI norms for sectors like Aviation,
Media and Single-brand retail will certainly encourage private players
and is thus a welcome move. While the interest rates will continue to
fall, the government is in no mood to offer short term stimulus and
has continued to abide by strict fiscal prudence and focus on
structural reforms. The government has chosen long term structural
reforms over short term sugar boosts to the economy. The
government believes that investment led growth is more sustainable
than growth obtained by short term boost to consumption and
hence, have focused more on creating an environment which
encourages foreign and private investments. This will lay strong
foundation in years to come, pushing growth through long term
structural measures for building stronger and sustainable economy.
Takeaways for Equity Investors:
The public holding is proposed to increase in equity from 25% to 35%.
This shall increase India's weight in emerging market indices which in
turn will boost FII flows into equity market in the long run. In
addition, the reformist stance adopted by the government will
ensure the growth in the coming years is more sustainable. These
measures shall reward equity investors in next 3 to 5 years. We
continue to remain positive on Financials, Industrials and Chemicals.
With mid-cap and small-cap trading at much lower levels from their
peak prices, we strongly believe that risk-reward is in favour of them
and investors should gradually increase allocation into this segment.
Fixed Income – Focus on fiscal prudence brings cheer to bond
markets
- Dhawal Dalal, CIO - Fixed Income
The Union Budget for FY20 was positive for the bond market as the
Finance Minister reaffirmed the government's stance on the fiscal
consolidation and targeted FY20 fiscal deficit of 3.3% of the GDP.
Bond market participants were concerned about prospects of
expansionary budget for FY20 amid lower-than-expected GST
Union Budget 2019 Impact Analysis & Outlook-
collection in FY19 as well as additional commitment towards the
farm sector. Predictably, yields of the benchmark 10Y Indian
Government Bond (IGB) declined by around 10 basis points to
around 6.65% after touching an intra-day low of 6.57%.
The FY20 Union Budget appeared to have a distinct tilt towards
attracting foreign capital in the Indian bond market in our opinion.
Bond market participants were relieved to note that the FY20 gross
borrowing of Rs. 7.1 trillion & net borrowing of Rs. 4.73 trillion were
kept relatively unchanged. Sentiment of bond market participants
improved further with the budget proposal of raising a part of FY20
government borrowing in foreign currencies. We believe this
measure will significantly improve acceptability of IGBs among
foreign investors, enhance prospects of getting IGB in widely used
global fixed income benchmarks and help reduce supply overhang in
the domestic bond market.
The bond market participants were also happy to note that the RBI
will be the new regulator of the Housing Finance Companies (HFCs).
With RBI as a single regulator, this measure will result in
harmonization of regulations between NBFCs & HFCs in our opinion.
The budget proposal of providing a short-term partial credit
guarantee of up to Rs. 1 trillion to high-rated pooled assets of NBFCs
will also provide credit-starved NBFCs with an additional avenue of
liquidity through securitization.
The Finance Minister's budget speech also mentioned the
importance of a vibrant corporate bond market. In that regard, her
proposal to include “AA” rated corporate bonds as eligible collateral
under Corporate Bond Repo will significantly increase the pool of
eligible collateral and will help develop an additional vital source of
funding. We expect the RBI and SEBI to amend the definition of
money market securities and include Repo as an eligible money
market instrument.
We continue to remain bullish on long-term (10Y+) IGBs as well as
high-quality, liquid corporate bonds maturing in 10 years. Benign
global bond markets & hunt for yields, surplus liquidity in the
banking system, subdued headline inflation, prospects of more rate
cuts by the RBI and gradual transmission of previous rate cuts will
likely provide a fertile ground for a gradual decline in yields of long-
term IGBs & quality corporate bonds in the medium-term.
That said, bond market will keenly watch the budget proposal of Rs.
900 billion of dividend from the RBI as well as progress on Rs. 1.05
trillion of disinvestment target for FY20. We believe that these two
are vital sources of revenue for the government. Any potential
slippage in the revenue trend may hamper the delicate fiscal balance
and investor sentiment in our opinion.

Edelweiss Equity Savings Fund-Regular Plan
HOW TO READ A FACTSHEET
Fund Manager : An employee of the asset management company such as a mutual fund or life insurer, who manages investments of the
scheme. He is usually part of a larger team of fund managers and research analysts.
Application Amount for Fresh Subscription : This is the minimum investment amount for a new investor in a mutual fund scheme.
Minimum Additional Amount : This is the minimum investment amount for an existing investor in a mutual fund scheme.
Yield to Maturity : The Yield to Maturity or the YTM is the rate of return anticipated on a bond if held until maturity. YTM is expressed as
an
annual rate. The YTM factors in the bond's current market price, par value, coupon interest rate and time to maturity.
SIP : SIP or systematic investment plan works on the principle of making periodic investments of a !xed sum. It works similar to a
recurring
bank deposit. For instance, an investor may opt for an SIP that invests Rs 500 every 15th of the month in an equity fund for a period of
three
years.
NAV : The NAV or the net asset value is the total asset value per unit of the mutual fund after deducting all related and permissible
expenses.
The NAV is calculated at the end of every business day. It is the value at which the investor enters or exits the mutual fund.
Benchmark : A group of securities, usually a market index, whose performance is used as a standard or benchmark to measure
investment
performance of mutual funds, among other investments. Some typical benchmarks include the Nifty, Sensex, BSE200, BSE500, 10-Year
Gsec.
Entry Load : A mutual fund may have a sales charge or load at the time of entry and/or exit to compensate the distributor/agent. Entry
load is
charged at the time an investor purchases the units of a mutual fund. The entry load is added to the prevailing NAV at the time of
investment.
For instance, if the NAV is Rs. 100 and the entry load is 1%, the investor will enter the fund at Rs 101.
Note: SEBI, vide circular dated June 30, 2009 has abolished entry load and mandated that the upfront commission to distributors will be
paid
by the investor directly to the distributor, based on his assessment of various factors including the service rendered by the distributor
Exit Load : Exit load is charged at the time an investor redeems the units of a mutual fund. The exit load is deducted from the prevailing
NAV
at the time of redemption. For instance, if the NAV is Rs 100 and the exit load is 1%, the redemption price would be Rs 99 Per Unit.
Modi!ed Duration : Modi!ed duration is the price sensitivity and the percentage change in price for a unit change in yield
Standard Deviation : Standard deviation is a statistical measure of the range of an investment's performance. When a mutual fund has a
high
standard deviation, its means its range of performance is wide, implying greater volatility.
Sharpe Ratio : The Sharpe Ratio, named after its founder, the Nobel Laureate William Sharpe, is a measure of risk-adjusted returns. It is
calculated using standard deviation and excess return to determine reward per unit of risk.
Beta : Beta is a measure of an investment's volatility vis-à-vis the market. Beta of less than 1 means that the security will be less volatile
than
the market. A beta of greater than 1 implies that the security's price will be more volatile than the market.
AUM : AUM or assets under management refers to the recent / updated cumulative market value of investments managed by a mutual
fund
or any investment !rm.
Holdings : The holdings or the portfolio is a mutual fund's latest or updated reported statement of investments/securities. These are
usually
displayed in terms of percentage to net assets or the rupee value or both. The objective is to give investors an idea of where their money
is
being invested by the fund manager.
Nature of Scheme : The investment objective and underlying investments determine the nature of the mutual fund scheme. For instance,
a
mutual fund that aims at generating capital appreciation by investing in stock markets is an equity fund or growth fund.Likewise, a mutual
fund that aims at capital preservation by investing in debt markets is a debt fund or income fund. Each of these categories may have
subcategories.
Rating Pro!le : Mutual funds invest in securities after evaluating their creditworthiness as disclosed by the ratings. A depiction of the
mutual
fund in various investments based on their ratings becomes the rating pro!le of the fund. Typically, this is a feature of debt funds.
