North Eastern State TrailThe 71-mile North Eastern State Trail is one of Michigan’s longest rail trails. Discover the natural beauty of northeast Michigan as you travel between the port cities of Alpena and Cheboygan on the former Detroit & Mackinaw Railway. The trail surface is finely screened and compacted limestone, firm and smooth and well suited for most bicycles. As you venture along the trail, you will pass through small villages and ghost towns that sprung up during the heyday of Michigan’s logging era. Most of these small towns have either a convenience store, restaurant or tavern. Millersburg, the approximate halfway point, offers a beautiful staging area next to its historic train station. As you approach Mullet Lake, the trail passes through Aloha State Park. All along the trail, you will enjoy the quiet solitude of Michigan’s second growth forests and travel along numerous wetlands, creeks, rivers and lakes. The entire length of trail is open to cross-country skiing and snowmobiling during the winter months.
