Prayer of Blessing for Our Students and Our Teachers As we prepare to begin a new academic year, let us pray for all students and teachers, that this year may be filled
with many opportunities to grow in wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. Let us encourage our students, especially
those who need a little extra time, attention, and patience from us. Let us pray for all new teachers and all those who
support our educational efforts, especially here at Sacred Heart. Please consider offering the following prayer while
here at Church or after you have arrived home; you may wish to pray it more than once and/or share it with a special
student or teacher in your life!
Lord our God, in your wisdom and love you surround us with the mysteries of the universe. In times long past
you sent us your prophets to teach your laws and to bear witness to your undying love. You sent us your Son to teach us
by word and example that true wisdom comes from you alone. Send your Spirit upon our students and teachers and fill
them with your wisdom and blessings. Grant that during this academic year they may devote themselves to their studies
and share what they have learned from others. Let our students enjoy their learning and take delight in new discoveries.
Help them to persevere in their studies and give them the desire to learn all things well. Bless our teachers, Lord. Let
them strive to share their knowledge with gentle patience and endeavor always to bring the truth to eager minds. Grant
that students and teachers alike may follow Jesus Christ, the way, the truth and the life, for ever and ever. Amen.
RCIA Are you (or is someone you know) thinking about
becoming a Catholic or thinking about completing
Christian initiation in the Catholic community?
The Catholic Church welcomes inquiries and provides
a process of spiritual discernment for adults who are
making decisions about the Gospel Life and full
membership in the Church. This process, known as
RCIA (The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults), is
the Church’s way of preparing adults to receive the
sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and First
Eucharist.
Please call or email Fr. John (914-963-4205;
[email protected]) if you (or anyone
you know) would like more information or would like
to begin the RCIA process. RCIA sessions at Sacred
Heart will begin in September.

Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time: Live What You Profess How many times have we heard a variation on the expression, “Talk the talk; walk the walk”? We sometimes
hear it to describe a person who says one thing but does another. We sometimes use it to describe a person who does
exactly what they claim to do.
Jesus is a person who talked the talk and walked the walk! He instructed his disciples to wash one another’s feet
– after he had washed theirs! He told them they must forgive one another as he asked the Father’s forgiveness of his
executioners as he awaited his death on the cross.
Our scriptures today invite us to reflect on humility, the quality of recognizing our own skills, talents, abilities as
well as our limits, our defects, our faults, our lowliness – while at the same time recognizing and celebrating the
strengths, talents, abilities and successes of all our brothers and sisters.
Consider the wonderful example of humility that we have in our Holy Father, Pope Francis. So many of us have
been rightly inspired and attracted by what we have seen and heard of him in the news. Recall he paid his own hotel bill
after he was elected Pope and he chose to ride on a bus with his fellow cardinals rather than with a private chauffeur. He
does not live in a palace and he has made great strides in reminding us priests that we don’t either! We’ve seen the
photos of him washing the feet of inmates in jail, of inviting the poor to eat with him. He even made a sandwich to feed
his Swiss Guard and has installed bathrooms and showers for the homeless. In other words, one might say “He gets it!”
- the message of Jesus that is. As it was then, so it is now – the message of Jesus is counter-cultural, it calls us to be
different, calls us to transform the world, calls us to recognize the many gifts and blessings we have received from God
and calls us to share them freely, without cost, especially with the poor.
Frankly, the humility of Jesus and the humility of his Vicar on earth, Pope Francis, are both inspiring and
challenging. Especially in our country today, perhaps we see greater evidence of false or inflated pride than we do an
honest, humble estimation of one’s abilities, talents and successes. We can be quick to criticize the abilities, talents and
achievements of others or minimize their hard work and their success. Jesus never did that; our Holy Father Pope
Francis never did that…do we?
As we continue enjoying the last few weeks of summer, perhaps we can take a moment and reflect on the ways
in which we live our faith. Do we give evidence that we are talking the talk as a disciple of Jesus and walking the walk,
as we imitate his humility? Are there areas in our lives where we might demonstrate greater humility? Are there people
in our life whose gifts, talents, abilities and successes we have not complimented, strengthened or encouraged? Have we
shown others the love and mercy that we ourselves have sought and received from God? Do we have the humility to
identify and “own” our weaknesses as well as ask God’s help to overcome them?
Perhaps this week we might do something nice for someone else who has no means to repay us…And if
someone should perform some random act of kindness toward us, let’s be sure to thank them and pray for them!
We NEED Your Assistance! We are IN NEED of and looking for COMMITTED PARISH VOLUNTEERS to assist us in the following
liturgical ministries: Special Ministers of the Eucharist, Lectors, Ushers, Altar Servers and Choir Members. If you’re
interested and able or if you would like more information, please be sure to come to our Ministry Fair the weekend of
September 28-29 following each of the Masses.
Save the Dates: Because everyone’s calendar gets filled up quickly, here are a few dates you may wish to put on your personal/
family calendars. More information about each event will be available as the dates approach us. We look forward to
seeing you at all of these events – and more! God bless you for your support of our parish life.
