    Alarm Management

OverviewAlarm management is responsible for collecting fault and event

information during system running process. The alarminformation is displayed on a real-time basis on a user-oriented

alarm monitoring platform or stored in database in the form ofalarm and notification. Both past and instantaneous runningstate of the system can be traced through visual interfacemonitoring or history query. Based on the information providedby alarm management, operation and maintenance personnelcan perform troubleshooting and take precaution measures torestore service and system to the normal state in time.

Introduction of TermsThis section introduces several common terms in the alarmmanagement system.

    Alarm Code

Alarm code is a non-exclusive identifier to differentiate alarms.Alarm code falls into foreground alarm code and backgroundalarm code. Foreground alarm code refers to a fixed valuedefined and allocated by macro in order to differentiate alarms inprogram. The same alarm code is used for the generated alarmand its corresponding recovery. Therefore, only alarm code andnotification code need to be defined. Macro name is specified inthe alarm identifier macro bar by the faulty source based on thetemplate provided by alarm management. Meanwhile, macro

value is defined by alarm management. Background alarm codeis for display on the alarm monitoring platform. It is mapped inrelation to foreground alarm code according to certain rules.

    Severity

There are four recommended alarm levels. Level 1 alarm is the

most severe alarm that affects all services and all NE resources.Level 2 alarm is a major one that affects most services andresources. Level 3 alarm is an ordinary one that hinders thenormal operation of some services. Level 4 alarm is a minor one

that affects a certain service or resource. Alarm level isdetermined by the faulty source. The four alarm levels are

indicated respectively as Critical, Major, Ordinary, Minor

andNotification in the alarm level bar of the alarm template. There is no level classification for notification.

    Alarm Type

Alarm information (3GPP) is classified into four types shown asbelow.

Communication Alarm: related with information transmission

(defined in ITU-T and suggested as X.733)

Handle Error alarm: related with software or process fault(defined in ITU-T and suggested as X.733)

Environmental Alarm: related with the environment whereequipment is located (defined in ITU-T and suggested as X.733)

Duality of Service Alarm: related with degradation of servicequality (defined in ITU-T and suggested as X.733)

    Cause

Possible alarm causes explaining trigger condition and triggerfrequency are enumerated to help operators find ways ofremoving the fault and take precaution measures. In this way, system can be restored to the normal running state as soon aspossible.

    Handling

Corresponding measures and advices for fault removal areprovided.
