Happy Winter Everyone, As the nights draw in I always find winter to be a time of introspection, sometimes what we see when we look within can be very revealing of our view on the world & in particular how we deal with change. Recently there has been a lot of upheaval in the world, Brexit, the new American President to name but two examples, but there has also been upheaval closer to home. Some of you may have been made aware via social media that there is a wave of negativity against the BWY & in particular the current Chair. This saddens me as for me, yoga is all about Union. By all means we must have our own opinions which should be arrived at by going within with detached awareness to discern whether our ego is involved or whether we are being led by others. We will not always share the views of everyone but where we strongly disagree we must look for a constructive way to deal with our objections & I feel it should never become a personal attack on another human being. After all are we not all One? On a lighter note, the day of yoga followed by the AGM on 5/11/16 was a great example of yogis coming together in harmony for 2 great sessions with Andrew Wrenn. I really enjoyed taking things down to a simple level which actually created much more freedom & enjoyment in the asana practice. Thank you to everyone who attended, I know from speaking to some of you that you enjoyed the day too. The new North West committee has now been voted in & we are sad to say goodbye to Lancashire County Rep Anne Nicholson so there is a vacancy there for anyone who would be interested. Thank you for all your hard work on the committee Anne, we will miss you. Namaste, Janet x

I’m writing this on 30th October and this week has seen much controversy and discussion around BWY and potential NOS – on Radio 4, in many newspapers and of course on various social media pages. Rightly so, there have been many differing views aired with passion and feeling (to put it politely). This summer I attended a couple of workshops with the inspirational Jackie Quayle. The heart chakra workshop was wonderful – I came away with an inane smile on my face and seemed to have limitless patience and kindness. It didn’t last. I turned 50 this year and I am part of the sandwich generation. I muster every single bit of yoga wisdom when I’m with my 83 year old mother however if I even mention yoga at home (unlike many of the wonderful yoga families that I know exist) my lot just roll their eyes and walk off. I think they see yoga as a threat; that dinner might not be cooked and normal service may not be resumed. I am peri-menopausal, I know this because a) I have decided to ‘let’ my hair go grey b) I’m never more than 3 metres away from some knitting and c) I get very het-up very quickly (which is only soothed by looking at pictures of puppies). I was lucky enough to spend a weekend of gong yoga at the Mandala Ashram. I can’t recommend this enough if you are looking for a peaceful, sometimes silent retreat with lots of yoga nidra and close connection to our natural habitat. We were allocated our kama yoga duties and you guessed it – I got to clean the ladies showers and toilets. If you had been passing that shower block you would have heard me chanting gayatri mantra between clenched teeth, interspersed with the occasional wretch or swear word. I came away from the Mandala in a zen-like state. I didn’t even want a glass of wine until around 8pm. Finally, I observed the wonderfully wise Marguerita Colley at the last IST day at her studio in Preston on yoga for Breathing Problems. I thought I’d left my coat there and spent the last 2 weeks getting het up, ringing round and sending e-mails to find it – which I did yesterday at home – it was hung up in the hall. At this rate you will see me at the next IST day sporting a full beard and rummaging around the bins at the back of the hall. Sending you love and light. Jackie ** I didn’t really swear whilst chanting gayatri mantra.

Hello Members Where has the time gone, it really doesn’t seem like twelve months since I took on the role as CR Greater Manchester and IOM. I’ve met some inspirational yogis throughout the last twelve months and made some good friends and would like to thank all of those who have supported me during my first year, thank-you. As usual I attended Health Awareness Day at Oldham library, Oldham Council team up with Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust & NHS Oldham Clinical Commissioning Group, to promote health and well-being at the interactive event. The BWY North West has a presence at this event, I give a short talk about the British Wheel of Yoga, the training their teachers receive and the benefits of Yoga. We also have a stand where members of the public can come for information. If any local student teachers would like to assist me on the next HAD in 2017, drop me a line to discuss it. Being a yoga teacher in an area with diversity, I was given the task to promote yoga in the community to women from ethnic backgrounds. This is to be funded by BWY North West and the sessions are up and running at Lowerplace Primary School, Rochdale, where I teach the children at the Breakfast club. The classes have been received well, with interest to continue when funding runs out, which brings me much delight and I’ve once again made some new friends and had the pleasure of meeting some really inspirational women in the community. Yoga is a wonderful tool in breaking down barriers and concept that sometimes can divide us, when a group of women get together to practice yoga, it highlights how we are all interconnected. I feel really privileged to have been involved in such an event. As I’m writing my report at the kitchen table, I have the most wonderful view of autumn trees and their change in colour, I sometimes get hypnotised by their gentle sway in the breeze as I sit and watch them, do you have a favourite place where you can contemplate, perhaps this could be your resolve for the new year, to find a space in your home or garden where we can sit and practice mindfulness. Colder days are here again, don’t’ forget to limber up properly when at yoga to warm up those muscles from this cold weather. Love and light Sue Photos from the Community Project by Sue

Hello Lancashire!
I hope everyone had a good summer! It seems a distant
memory now doesn’t it?
It is certainly now a season for turning inwards, but this
gives us greater opportunity to spend time on our yoga
practice, which is definitely a benefit of the dark
evenings.
This will be my final report to you, as, with a somewhat
heavy heart, I have decided not to stand for County Rep
next year. I have a demanding full time day job in the
NHS which can be a challenge, and in addition family
needing my support up in Scotland. In the future I am
planning to move up there to be nearer to them.
I have had a really enjoyable and rewarding 4 years as
County Rep however, and it has been a real privilege to
work with you all. I have had opportunity to meet some
lovely people, help plan, organise and teach at BWY
events, and even a stint teaching at the Om Yoga
Show!!! For a part time yoga teacher like me, none of
this would have been possible without this role!
If there is anyone out there who feels they could take on
the role, it is great fun (see above!) and in truth you
would not need a huge amount of time to spare. I am
staying on for now, in the background, until a new
person can be found and will support you until you feel
confident
With Love to you all, thank you all for your support!
Om Shanti

ADVERTISING IN YOGA NORTH WEST

Please do not send adverts within the main body of the email as they will not be accepted.

Hello Everybody - I hope you are well. As I write this, it’s a crisp 5 degrees and sunny outside. This is the time of year when many of us feel like hibernating, some of us crave “comfort” foods and the warmth we find indoors – I know I do! I often have to force myself to leave the house to go for walks, to attend yoga classes (!) and I am always glad when I do. At each yoga class, I learn something new and with each teacher, a different technique and manner.
I thoroughly enjoyed Phillipa Bellis’s afternoon of yoga at
Quaker Meeting House on 1st October. Phillipa instructed
us in the practice of mindfulness in yoga, with the
emphasis on feeling – e.g. how did the sleeves of our tops
feel against our skin as we raised our arms in the air?
This was a new approach and one that really worked for
me. Some of us found that keeping our eyes closed
heightened the sense of feeling and concentration.
On September 17th, in my capacity as County Rep, I observed
the IST at Rixton with Glazebrook; “Bones for Life” with
Marye Wyvill. There were 29 students in total and we
began sitting in a circle, listening intently as Marye
introduced the topic. As the day progressed, we were
shown - amongst other things - how to build healthy bone;
we practiced various techniques to bring the spine back to
optimal patterns of movement and how to protect the
vulnerable areas of the spine in various yoga postures.
There was so much to take in! Marye explained that she
was sharing just one small part of a much larger subject. I
am pleased to say that student feedback from the day was
excellent.
I am now using many of the techniques from Phillipa and
Marye’s classes in my own asana practice and in normal
daily life.
Merseyside Yoga Association’s next meeting is scheduled for
Saturday 4th February – full details in this newsletter. I hope
to see you there or at one of the many other excellent yoga
events planned in the North West Region.
Please do get in touch if you have any suggestions for new
topics, venues or generally.
Enjoy your winter and your yoga

Rosemary has been practicing Yoga for 38 years, teaching since 1985 and training teachers for the BWY for over 25 years from her base in Liverpool. She has studied with a wide range of teachers and styles of yoga; two in particular (Philip Jones and Satchidananda Ma) have enabled her to have an extended knowledge and practical experience of breath work and pranayama, which is the subject of this in-service training day. Rosemary leads with a disciplined yet flowing style, which blends precision in alignment with her love of movement and a strong focus on the breath, she comments, “The breath, after all, is our connection with the invisible essence of our being.”

IN SERVICE TRAINING ‘BRAIN MOVE’ FOR YOGA
with Stephen Braybrook
Date : 13 May 2017
Location: Trinity, Stockport
Brain-Move is a unique pre-activation training method that has been designed by Stephen Braybrook. Also known as The Movement Man, Stephen is a revolutionary human biomechanical scientist in the world of human movement. His method is being used by ‘movers’ from all backgrounds and disciplines but interestingly is proving to be highly popular with yoga practitioners due to its fast, effective and dramatic improvements on:
Flexibility
Range of motion
Coordination
Balance
Power
Strength
“The beauty of Brain-Move”, explains Stephen, “is that it is a unique system, based on science that can create dramatic improvements in the body in a very short time-frame. Using the underlying understanding of neuroscience we are able to establish the most effective movement patterns, increase range of motion, enhance balance in the body and dramatically improve flexibility, often within seconds, without a stretch in sight”. And the best part? All of this can be done quickly, easily and effectively by yourself as part of your warm-up when you have the knowledge and understanding of how. “When I designed Brain-Move I did not have a particular category of ‘mover’ in mind as it is applicable for anyone wanting to free up movement, improve performance, get out of pain and back to optimum function. However, since Brain-Move has launched it has proved an instantaneous and massive hit within the yoga community because of the obvious benefit of having fast, effective tools that dramatically improve strength, balance and flexibility”.

I hope your new September term went well for you with lots of new students and you are looking forward to a break at Christmas. Just to let you know I am dropping the surname Marsom and going back to just Royle as my husband and I have split up. I have organized the IST and the First aid events for 2017 except for Whittle-le-Woods which I hope to finalize very soon. I thank you for your suggestions which I have noted and booked the topics and tutors as far possible. Please see the details in this Newsletter. The fees for both IST and First Aid have been kept the same. It is advisable to book early to make sure you are not disappointed when it is fully booked for the one you wanted. It also makes it easier for our booking officer Sue Hargreaves. Please could you check when your First Aid is due for renewal? It is every three years and let Sue or myself know. This would very helpful so we can plan how many to organize, as we are only allowed 12 attendees at each one. Please don't leave it to the last minute and be disappointed when they are fully booked. I am organizing an extra First Aid at Whittle-le-Woods Chorley to help those in the Lancashire area. The IST carry 7.5 CPD points, you must obtain 15 points per year. If you have more you can carry 5 extra over to following year. First Aid do not count towards CPD points but still need to be registered together with the IST days on line with the BWY no later than February 2017. If you cannot attend an IST event you can always go to a BWY Seminar, Congress or any other Yoga organization's Seminar. It is one point per teaching hour. Most of the tutors are the same ones who tutor the IST days, so you are still getting the same standard of teaching. The BWY Congress will soon be with us 7-9th April 2017 at Warwick University. Sue and I will be there and we look forward to seeing you. Please make yourself known and have a chat. Any problems just feel free to let us know. We are always willing to help. I am off to Corfu teaching April 21st to 28th April. If you fancy a break in a 5 star hotel with various activities yoga, meditation, exercise, dancing, walks and bird watching. Please contact me for details. Have a lovely Christmas and a very Happy New Year. Love and Bright Blessings Christine Royle

Genuinely, I haven’t regretted it, the workload and sheer volume of knowledge that is covered can be intense – especially when you haven’t studied for a while like me – but it’s more than quenching my yoga appetite. As the course has developed over the last few months we have now reached a stage where we’re creating lesson plans and we’ve started to teach each other. For me it’s been nerve-wracking and thrilling in equal measure. The first time I had to teach my fellow students I was surprisingly calm, I had my lesson plan which I’d practised several times, I knew what I wanted to say and how I wanted to say it, I was well prepared. The second time however was a different matter, I was equally well prepared, but this time the nerves kicked in; I had nervous butterflies in my tummy and my palms were clammy. But, as I sat with my fellow students in front of me and began to teach, the nerves started to fade and my mind settled. At the end of the class, I felt elated, in spite of the nerves, I had loved every single minute of that class from the introduction, to walking around and seeing all those fabulous yogis in the asana that I’d directed them into, right up to the closing reading. It wasn’t until that point that I realised, whole heartedly, yes, I do want to be a yoga teacher and I can be a yoga teacher. Now, I’m not saying it will be like that for everyone who’s currently in training, and some people will already be 100% sure that they want to teach. But, getting over that big hurdle of “can I really be a yoga teacher?” was such a huge step for me both in terms of the course and for me as a person. I’m now seeing the course through new eyes; I see thoughts and ideas for future lessons, themes and sequences both for myself and for my future students. And for me personally it has further demonstrated the transformational potential of yoga because once again it has helped to give me back some self-confidence as well as heaps of ideas and creativity. But most importantly I’ve learnt not to let my nerves get the better of me because as the teacher it’s important that I enjoy teaching the class as much as my students taking part in the class, so that’s what I’ll be building on in future classes as I build up my teaching experience.

I’m a student yoga teacher, currently working towards my British Wheel Teaching Diploma and I thought it would fun to share with you some of my experiences during my journey. I’ve given myself an open brief to talk about the stuff you might not hear about in the course literature, my biggest fears and how I’m dealing with them and of course what I love most about the course (which is everything at the moment – but we’ll get onto that!) For those fellow students, I hope you’ll enjoy reading about my experiences, maybe they’re similar to yours, I’d love to hear if they are. And for those thinking about starting teacher training, I hope my articles will give you a snippet of what it’s like to be a trainee teacher. And of course, if you are a teacher, maybe some of the highs and lows still apply. We’re all yogis and so I hope there’ll be something for everyone. As I sat down to write this, I started to ask myself what it’s really like being a yoga teacher in training? Well it’s exciting, inspiring, fun and I love it. But, it’s also nerve-wracking, intense and challenging – which are not necessarily bad things. When I first started looking into teacher training, it was a while after I’d done my BWY Foundation Course – which I LOVED, and I was looking to feed my yoga habit. I was attending regular classes and workshops but I wanted more and I wanted the regularity that the Foundation Course had given me. But, I asked myself – and this was a big but – I’m not sure if I actually want to become a teacher? Does that matter? I started to research different teachers and courses, and I remember coming across something that said “you are expected to start teaching approximately half way through the course”. Seriously?! I was shocked. But what if I’m not going to become a teacher at the end of it? I asked myself again, and for a while I stopped looking at the courses. But it wasn’t long until I came back to it, I was hungry for more yoga at a deeper level and eventually I bit the bullet and signed up for the course.
Welcome to our new feature, I hope you
enjoy the insights of a student yoga teacher.

Annual General Meeting

Delight of Your Yoga Practise
with Andrew Wrenn

session with Andrew
This year the AGM was held on 5th November at one of our regular venues, Trinity Hall in the village of Woodsmoor near Stockport. We had to move to the Scout Hut round the back, but this proved to be a cosy quiet room for the day. It was great to see so many people in attendance for the free workshop provided by Andrew Wrenn of Pure Yoga Cheshire, a Macclesfield base yoga studio, and to meet a few members at the AGM afterwards. Andrew reminded us of how easy it is to ‘overdo it’ with our yoga practise, simply by concentrating too much and over intellectualising. By taking the practise back to the core of pranayama and gentle asanas we had a blissful few hours of practise before getting down to the AGM. My personal favourite quote of the day from Andrew, “if it hurts, its not yoga’. The AGM went well with reports from Janet, Christine, Russell and me with our new secretary Amanda taking the minutes. It was good to be reminded of the activity we have been involved with this year and I am looking forward to the events planned for next year. I hope you are too. Please let your County Rep know if you have anything you would like to be discussed at the committee meetings.
