In ten years, how old will you be? And your kids,

pets, whitegoods – how about your business?

Issue 3 challenges your perception on change, and is loaded with stories and tips to create a plan for your future – a Plan to Change.

Our cover story on Robert “The Magician” Rose speaks of his plan to change from a glittering NBL career, to a new and brighter view of the future in business with his gorgeous wife Patricia. Journalism rookie Rohan O’Neil, cleverly captures Rose’s secret strategies to plan and achieve in a changing environment with practice, persistence, determination,

discipline and a lot of patience. The contributors this issue

are booming with great ideas in change mastery. In particular, Kelly Thompson’s (p6) article outlining the “fight and flight” reactions to perceiving change as a threat. I read the article with a smile on my face, reminded that if we “change” our perception to change, we can save alot of time and emotionally draining reactions. As an old proverb goes, “Every change brings an opportunity.” In other words, we must learn to view change as a means of achieving our goals, rather than a barrier preventing progress.

A huge wrap to the article by Peter Hodgson, who has

recently read the book, Who Moved my Cheese? By Spencer Johnson. The book is a must read, and copies can be borrowed from the BIZRICH resource library in the City or email [email protected] for a free book review. In addition, the social pics and businesses for sale are both now a full page, indicating some serious activity in Townsville!

With 5000 copies of Issue 3 of Zoom in Business magazine hitting the streets this quarter (we’ve quadrupled since issue 1!), we hope you enjoy this friendly and free publication, and welcome your feedback.

With over 20 years of playing basketball professionally, Robert

Rose has jet-setted all across Australia, picking up a swag of individual and team honours on the way. It would’ve been easy for the NY native to just coast through his playing days with no thought of life after basketball. But after falling in love with Australian wine during a successful playing stint in Adelaide, the man known on the court as ‘The Magician’, and his wife Patricia formulated a plan - a plan to change.

The former Townsville Crocodiles star is now the proud owner of Vine21, the hugely successful wine bar and restaurant on

Flinders Street West. It is his commitment to hard work and discipline that has seen him forge a career off the court that is sure to rival his illustrious playing career.

“It’s all about keeping the switch on for me. It takes consistency and hard work on the court and now here at Vine21 - it never stops.”

According to Robert, planning to change means having the discipline to be patient, to follow your plans and to evolve to any

changes that occur along the way.“I got to Adelaide and played for the

36ers who at the time were sponsored by a winery, so I was spoilt right away with really good Australian wine. It’s definitely an acquired taste, but soon enough I fell in love with wine. That’s basically where it all started.”

“Patience and discipline are huge with me, and you will get nowhere without hard work.”

And when this local legend speaks about patience, he does so with his own experiences in mind. Vine21, now considered by many as Townsville’s premier wine bar and restaurant, is the result of more than a

decade of careful planning and research undertaken by the local legend and his hard-working wife.

“I always said I was never the most talented guy on the court. But you were never going

to out-work me, and you were never going to out-think me.”

This is the attitude of Robert, and his commitment and enthusiasm for his new career path shines through as he chats to us from inside his visually stunning wine bar and restaurant.

Coming to Australia in 1992, Robert forged one of the most successful careers in the history of the National Basketball League. Feared by opponents, respected by team-mates and adored by fans, ‘The

Magician’ Robert Rose really hasn’t changed all that much. After drawing the curtains on a glittering career three years ago, Robert speaks of his careers on and off the court with fierce pride and is quick to draw similarities between the two.

“I have always had to be able to evolve and adapt, whether it was out on the court or on any night in our restaurant. Every week we played a different team, so we would have to change our tactics and be ready for that challenge. Same goes here, we started out as a wine bar, not a restaurant. We were a wine bar that did food. Now we’ve become this amazing restaurant, people are demanding we expand our menu.”

During Robert’s playing days with the Crocodiles, he was known as an inspirational leader and was never afraid to take a big shot under pressure when the game was on the line. His fading away buzzer-beating three-pointer to sink the Sydney Kings during a play-off game is one of the greatest moments in the history of the Crocodiles. But when asked if a shot like that was more daunting than dealing with the pressure of a particularly busy night behind the Vine21 Bar, Robert was quick to dispel the entire notion of pressure.

“I’ve never ever felt pressure, because once I did the work on the training track, the game was easy. I knew I had done the preparation, so I was confident enough to nail that shot. Just like we are always preparing here, sorting out bookings, food: preparation is key.”

While Robert himself has never done any specific business training, this does not mean he went in to this venture unprepared.

“My business training was doing all the research and the development, over the last decade. Patricia and I’d go home to the States, go to Brisbane, to pick everyone’s brains as far as what needed to be done,” says Robert.

Another area where Robert excelled was his leadership on the court. The Crocodile’s enjoyed unprecedented success with him as Captain, and at Vine21 he again finds himself leading by example and is committed to helping his staff improve every day.

“There is no rest as a professional

athlete,” says Rose, “and the same goes for a business owner. There is no ‘off switch’.”

His staff at Vine21 are under no illusions when it comes to what Robert expects each and every time they come to work. Robert reiterates that talent will only get you so far in any venture.

“What you need is heart. You can’t teach heart, you either have it or you don’t. I would, any day, take a guy with heart and work ethic over a more talented guy. You know why? Because in the long run, he will be far better than the talented guy who just coasts through.”

It can be said for any goal, that you have to walk before you can run. Robert proudly tells us he is a fundamentalist through and through, and owes his success to this trait. This attribute has been most helpful in his new calling as a restauranteur.

“When I played my focus was always on fundamentals. Today everyone wants to shoot a 3 or dunk, but you need the fundamentals, the basics, down first before you can achieve these. In the business world it’s exactly the same. Everyone wants to make money straight away but you can’t do anything without the basics. If you build on the fundamental skills, you will get stronger, and then you can achieve anything.”

While Robert may be the face of Vine21, he is quick to praise his partners and hard-working staff.

“The restaurant game is a team sport and I’ve always thrived in the team atmosphere. Without my wife, our partners Lyn and Grant, and our staff, Vine21 would simply not be possible.”

The accolades continue to roll in for their business, with critics likening it to the chic Melbourne restaurant scene. Their wine list has also received critical acclaim, with a beaming Robert telling us of Vine21’s recent mention in Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine, one of the country’s top wine lists. Vine21 is fast becoming the new ‘it’ location for Townsville’s

dining community and the sky is the limit for this 13-month-old restaurant. Robert is super proud of everything Vine21 achieves and rates these achievements equally with his basketball honours.

The success of Vine21 was no forgone conclusion, and luck had nothing to do with it. Robert and his wife were meticulous in every aspect of their preparation and closely followed their plan to change. And ‘planning to change’ according to Robert is the discipline to be patient and follow the rules, the system and tactics.

All that Vine21 achieves is a testament to Robert and Patricia Rose’s years of hard

work, asking the right questions, and giving everything they had to their dream. Robert’s successful transition from professional athlete to business owner is proof that with the right planning, change is achievable.

“It’s been a journey, but it is nowhere near finished. We work smart every single day, even when we aren’t here we are always planning,” says a clearly determined and proud Rose.

And with a dedicated figure like Robert Rose at the helm, Vine21 plans to stay at the top for a long time, just playing a different ball game.

How do you cope with change? How about those around you?

Whether the catalyst for change is immediate, phased, inspirational or systematic there will inevitably be a level of disruption and a degree of readiness or resistance. As we know with all well-laid plans, there will always be unexpected moments. However, the one constant has been vision and discipline to “plan to change” rather than “change the plan”.

As humans, we tend to respond to change the same way we respond to anything we perceive as a threat, by the flight or fight syndrome. Over the years of being involved in small to large business, the first reaction I observe is usually flight – people try to avoid change wherever possible – it’s uncomfortable, time consuming and inconvenient. Faith Popcorn, a popular futurist, calls this “cocooning” – where we seal ourselves off from those around us and try to ignore what is happening – sound familiar? This is a natural human reaction, so most of us experience ‘cocooning’ just by being passive. It’s when you don’t volunteer for teams or committees, don’t make suggestions, ask questions, or offer constructive criticism. But the changes ahead are inescapable. Those who “cocoon” themselves will be left behind.

Even worse is to fight, which is to actively resist change. Resistance tactics may be in the way of negativity, destructive criticism, and often sabotage. It’s rare we find a company without any of these unfortunate reactions.

So, now that we’ve established that the majority of us flight or fight change, you can plan to change through a commitment to boost your health and wealth, through embracing change, as the vehicle to opening doors to your future success.

It is the human psyche that processes whether

unexpected events are loss-provoking or that they contribute to slightly changing your path but keep you heading in the right direction – closer and closer to the goal.

Many of us who are running our own businesses burn the candle at both ends and are generally tired, focused on wealth generating activity and neglect to put the oxygen mask on ourselves in the time of an emergency.

The key to sustainable change is to identify self-limiting habits and environments to become “ready “ or “less resistant” to change the way.

When you have established a healthy outlook your productivity at work will automatically increase and positive changes will fuel your ability to manage sustainable change.

As with everything unexpected, remember that if you plan to change yourself, you will embrace positive health and wealth changes in the future.

little moment in life when a door opens to let the future

in.”Graham Greene

My tips to create healthy and wealthy habits: 1) Exercise (or play with the kids) for at least

30 minutes every day (preferably in an environment that is green or that makes you feel good)

2) Drink lots of water

3) Eat (yes! Eat well and enjoy it. How many of you skip breakfast?)

4) Most of all cut yourself some slack

5) Stop the guilt trips because you don’t take the time for yourself - JUST TAKE IT

Energy Efficient Solutions

with Andrew Walters

This issue, we interview Andrew Walters, the driving force behind

Waltlec’s success in Townsville, to explain the benefits of investing in solar technologies.Over the years as an electrical contractor, Andrew identified a need to help his customers save money on their electricity bills. As a result, he has now added solar design, supply and installation to Waltlec’s extensive list of residential, commercial and industrial electrical services.

“The decision to become an accredited solar designer and installer in our electrical business has boosted our confidence in the versatility of solar as a source of energy. Waltlec can now provide Townsville’s commercial, industrial and residential investors with solar power that is environmentally friendly, saves money and will increase the value of our customers property in years to come.”

As a bonus, there has never been a more appropriate time to invest in solar with

the healthy Renewable Energy Certificates rebate in place.

We hear it in the news, and with the political agenda highly focussed on millions of dollars towards solar rebates.

Over the course of our interview, Andrew spoke of the past scepticism relating to government incentives and the workmanship associated with these services.

“Our team at Waltlec are categorically determined to ensure that every solar design, product and installation is carried out to the highest standard – our reputation depends on it here in Townsville.”

So is solar for you? There are many potential customers who are not aware that local solar designers are just as competitive in price as the larger companies that are penetrating our northern market. “What we prefer at Waltlec is a larger focus on educating the customer because let’s face it, a solar PV (Photovoltaic) system is a large but fruitful investment.” Andrew states.

As a potential customer, Andrew has provided some tips to help you choose the

best solar system for your investment:For more information on selecting a quality solar system and installer, Andrew recommends you visit the Consumer Guide at www.cleanenergycouncil.org.au or call him direct on 0422 288 841.

1. AVOID THE COWBOYS - Sometimes price is not the only point of sale to help you make a decision. Ensure you are bas-ing your decision on a blend of price and confidence with your system installer.

2. ONSITE QUOTES - Companies who do not make a site visit before installation of system are known to use “Google earth”. This IS NOT an appropriate strategy to design a system for your roof.

3. Deals that are too good to be true gener-ally are. Look at the terms and conditions of the product before you make your commitment.

4. Compare price and quality of product. Ensure that the installation is ‘hassle free’ and non-intrusive.

Adapt to a changing environment

Colour is not only one of the most powerful elements of design, it is often the most persuasive factor. Colour can increase brand recognition by a whopping 80%. And brand recognition directly leads to consumer confidence.

Colours can attract shoppers, turn them away and also has the ability to change shopping behaviour! While 52% of shoppers are more likely to enter a store if there is a sale sign in the window, some colours can actually persuade them to purchase.

Colours for impulse shoppers are red, black and royal blue. This is why they are popular in fast food restaurants and clearance sales. Shoppers on a budget prefer navy and teal, which makes them popular choices for bank and department store logos. Traditional buyers lean towards pink and sky blue, which are good colour choices for clothing stores.

Yellow represents optimism and youth, orange is aggressive, demanding a call to action, while green is associated with wealth and also makes us relax, along with purple. Pink is romantic and feminine, while black is powerful and sleek.

When choosing colours consider exactly what you want to make your customers feel, as colours can change not only how a consumer feels but their very actions. Colour should be an integral part of the design process - often the very first thing considered.

We all marvel at his feats, his ability to make a hut out of twigs, to start a fire

with wet wood, to escape a frozen lake without hypothermia, climb a massive mountain and slide down the other side, drink bodily waste, eat slugs...and so on.

Why does he impress us? Well if you put this in the context of business (strange bed fellows, indeed) adaptability or planning for change is something this guy does for a living. No matter where he lands, he always has the same basic tools to survive, not at least to mention his ‘mindset’. With key ingredients like this, survival happens from deserts, snow-capped mountains to rainforests; every time, by following a basic framework of disciplines that can be slightly modified by the environment is a tactic for success and in turn survival.

(Yes he has help in the form of local experts, much like a business coach for this analogy!)

Let’s bridge the gap between the Special Forces trooper and the business owner. What tools do we arm ourselves with in business to survive the challenges both known and unknown, what will soften the impact and keep us trekking on toward our goal?

What changes will we have to adapt to in the frontiers of business? Lets look at some events from the recent past; GFC, Property Slump, Federal Elections (and their effects). If we take the time to look into the microscope at what has happened in our region to affect the economy, most of our local businesses have had some obvious flow on effects, hence a changing business environment is beyond our control.

There is no doubt that businesses have lost a degree of confidence and have adopted a bunker mentality. Are you waiting for the shelling to stop? Or have you taken the bull by the horns and campaigned hard for business, no matter what the change.

Planning to change is a concept we are

hardwired to avoid. Rarely do we welcome unexpected change, especially as groups, and even more so in business.

Does your business have a plan that can respond to a changing market?

Be prepared for the fact that change is a

constant and universal law. The businesses that plans to continually impress, exceed and attain great heights of consumer satisfaction and return business, regardless of change, will inevitably inspire others to a point that it will be the genesis of change for others (competitors).

A well structured plan is a lot easier to adapt to than survival in the wild without a compass!

Have you seen the guy who consistently jumps out of helicopters and eats absolutely

anything we find repellent, in practically every harsh terrain around the world, and he

does it all from the comfort of your lounge chair on Monday nights?

Planning to change requires some real basic framework of disciplines in an unfamiliar business environment:

1) Keep your team up-skilled and communicating – passionate people succeed

2) Keep customers engaged – give them a reason to buy again

3) Keep in touch with the marketing environment – innovate rather than imitate

4) Keep abreast of current affairs that affect your industry and demographic – read, learn, train

5) Prognosticate – look back in order to stride ahead

8

“...change is a

constant and

universal law...”

Converting theory to practice

by Peter Hodgson

Change is known to be a blessing or a curse, depending on perspective.

A s a student studying business at JCU, I’ve discovered that change

is the norm at every level throughout history. It appears that change relating to business – particularly in Townsville where we are isolated – is not all about being competitive, it’s about survival.

Have you ever read the book, Who Moved My Cheese? If not, it’s a must for your business library. The author, Spencer Johnson, writes a parable about change that takes place in a maze where four amusing characters, called Hem, Haw, Sniff and Scurry, look for “Cheese”.

Sniff and Scurry are mice. They’re non-analytical and non-judgmental and they just want cheese. They are willing to do whatever it takes to get it. On the other hand, Hem and Haw are mouse-size humans called

“littlepeople”. They have an entirely different relationship with cheese. Cheese is not just sustenance to them; it’s their self-image. Their lives and belief systems are built around the cheese they’ve found.

As I thumbed through the pages of the story, I viewed “cheese” being a metaphor for our livelihood, our job or career path, the industries we work in, and it can stand for anything from relationships, money, freedom, health, recognition or spiritual peace.

The point of the story is that we have to be alert to changes in the cheese, and be prepared when the cheese we have runs out. Overall, it was clear that the theory of ‘change’ cannot be practiced, but planned for. Each one of us has our own idea of what cheese is, and we pursue it because

we believe it makes us happy. If we get our cheese, we often become attached to it. And if we lose it, or it’s taken away – particularly if it is unplanned - can be traumatic.

The author sums this great book up nicely with “The biggest inhibiter to change lies within yourself, and nothing gets better until you change. You are rewarded when you go past your fear and enjoy the adventure”.

So take the first step, recognise and plan to change and have fun along the way.

Practical tips from Who Moved My Cheese?:

1) change happens - keep moving with the cheese

2) anticipate change - smell the cheese often so you know when it’s getting old

3) adapt to change quickly - the quicker you let go of old cheese, the sooner you can enjoy new cheese

4) enjoy change - savour the adventure and enjoy the taste of new cheese

Page 10: Zoom In Business Magazine 3

Business coaching is a relatively new profession, its broad origins are in

sports coaching, and while the concept may mean something different to each individual, the official definition describes business coaching as “an ongoing relationship which focuses on clients taking action towards the realisation of their visions and goals.” (International Coach Federation – ICF).

In a nutshell, coaching is a process of building awareness and responsibility and provides the client with a new level of structure, support and feedback by revealing plenty of critical data about what’s working (and what isn’t).

Master Coach and Licensed Business Broker Kirsten Gadsby says, “Coaching is a results-driven, proactive relationship built on experience, rapport and trust. The coach is involved to the extent of holding the client accountable, yet detached enough to be truly objective.”

“There should be a connection between you and your coach from the outset,” says Kirsten, who has coached over 100 businesses in her profession as a certified business coach. “There should be a good dose of trust and trustworthiness on both parties’ behalf.”

Although a coach is often the missing link in helping people achieve their goals and outcomes, it is the client who should be in control. “Coaches are skilled in listening and questioning in a way that facilitates a client’s own best choices. The coach usually doesn’t evaluate or come up with solutions.”

While the industry is unregulated, BIZRICH is fully licensed and operates as a fellow of the Australian Institute of Business Brokers – a federation that requires members to work to a code of ethics. While a business coach is often used during the start-up stage of a business or when a business is ready for expansion or growth, BIZRICH has a point of difference where it provides programs and services to also help business owners prepare and sell their business.

A Townsville businesswoman talks to Zoom in Business about her experiences with BIZRICH business coaching.

How long have you had a coach? What was the time plan or was this left open?

“I’ve had a coach for over 12 months. I had always planned on it being a specific time period of 12 months, however I’m making enough money to continue the program.”

Why did you choose to use a BIZRICH business coach?

“I guess things weren’t going to plan. It’s been a really tough year. Not having been in business before, I was looking to ensure that I was on the right track in a business sense and in other areas such as marketing, and understanding the business financials. I started off with a group coaching program, and moved into a weekly private coaching program. My coach pushed me past my boundaries, and I realised that business was really quite easy once I was organised and had a plan that someone was helping me stick to, with consequences if I didn’t. My coach

keeps me on track – once a week, for under an hour, I am able to find my coaching fee back by implementing changes and ideas. Now I can’t afford to not have a coach.”

Would you recommend a BIZRICH business coach?

“I looked at services in the southern cities for help, as I was embarrassed to admit to anyone locally that I wasn’t making money. The only service any southern business could offer was phone coaching at a price three times what I could engage BIZRICH face-to-face here in Townsville for! I heard about BIZRICH and how they help people grow and sell their businesses and wanted to learn how to do it myself. I learnt a huge lesson - I was the biggest challenge in my business. I changed my attitude, I got educated in business and the money automatically started to flow. Also, my business coach trained me how to replace myself in my business with a winning team, so I can create more time to improve the business.”

(Keeping in Touch)A must for any business owner who needs to kick start their new venture, grow their current business or prepare for sale.

Upstairs at 287 Flinders Mall or via aback entrance which can be accessedthrough the alley way on Sturt St in

between the Telstra and GHD buildings!

Townsville's first GreenTable accredited restaurant and thewinners of Townsville City Council'sbusiness sustainability award 2009!

The Balcony cafe restaurant is one of Townsville’s best

kept secrets. Hidden away from the hustle and bustle in a heritage listed building, this place is splendidly unique.

Even with the Mall redevelopment well underway, this busy little business is thriving. Decadently fitted

out internally with a heritage feel, it’s the open air alfresco dining that soaks up the new city atmosphere.

Owners Jim and Jan Leese are proud of the successful business they have created. “All the sauces and dishes are made fresh daily – this is proven in the taste”, Jan proudly states. This restaurant is also the only Green Table Certified restaurant in Townsville and is introducing a revolutionary compost system.

Open for Breakfast and lunch 5 days a week, the exclusivity of this trendy little spot is without a doubt the cosiest, and most comfortable place to dine. “We have hundreds of people through the door each week just for breakfast and lunch alone”.

On top of it all, once the Mall is finished it’s development, there are plans to open for dinner, adding to the long list of exclusive dining experiences. “We have not actively marketed that we also do offsite catering and hire out the restaurant for private functions and workshops – word of mouth has been our best means of growth.”

The location is prestigious - but accessible to all, particularly when one of the two pedestrian crossings along the new mall is planned to be located directly beside The Balcony entrance.

Putting it simply – The Balcony restaurant is a very special place – a destination! Make it yours the next time you’re in the City.

Just a few lines to thank you and all your staff at BIZRICH for making the sale of my business STRESS-FREE. I really don’t know where to start, from the day I phoned Kirsten to make the appointment to sell my Business, I knew she was keen and excited. BIZRICH made certain that our business financials were in order before listing, which made getting a contract so much easier. As a busy shop owner I didn’t have time to sell my business, I was tired mentally and physically. Kirsten took all the work load on from organising all the

appropriate paper work to the advertising, to dealing with all prospected buyers. With in 4 weeks BIZRICH had a buyer to purchase my business. I’m thrilled to have had BIZRICH be part of my success in selling my business, I would recomend any business sellers BIZRICH as their broker for a STRESS-FREE sale, and results. Thanks again for a wonderful result, you are true PROFESSIONALS!

cheers, Lyn Huston ( Scoops Fish Bar)
